State legislators to discuss business issues The Franklin County chambers of commerce will co-host a legislative breakfast featuring our elected state officials discussing important issues affecting the business climate in south central Pennsylvania. The breakfast will be held on Thursday, October 13 from 7 to 9 a.m. at The Orchards. Career Readiness: A Business-led Approach Workforce development is critical to growing and sustaining a healthy economy. The business and education communities must continually work together to make sure that the talent pool meets industry demand. The recent passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act and the option to include measures of career readiness as part of school accountability systems provides a new opportunity to define what it means to be career ready and to better align what is taught in schools with workplace needs. The Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation, an affiliate of the Chamber, leads the Community Education Coalition which looks to improve workforce development efforts by mobilizing stakeholders to engage with early childhood education and employability skills training. The Foundation also administers the local job board,, which will relaunch with a new website design this month. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is coordinating similar efforts on a national level. At a free seminar on Monday, September 19 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Chamber Foundation will release a new report that calls on the business community to support states and districts in adopting and implementing a combined college and career readiness indicator to support the future workforce. “Career Readiness: A Business-led Approach for Supporting K-12 Schools” is free to attend. The seminar will also feature panels on elevating career readiness and employer leadership. What’s on the menu for Sip & Savor DEP now accepting applications for Small Business Advantage grants The Chamber’s signature fundraiser, Sip & Savor: Black & White Ball, will be held this month on Saturday, September 17 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Chambersburg Country Club. An after party follows the main event and will last from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today the availability of up to $1 million of grant funding in the 13th year of the Commonwealth’s Small Business Advantage Grant Program for small businesses that adopt or acquire equipment or processes that promote pollution prevention and/ or energy efficiency projects.

The evening will be a true culinary experience featuring an amazing four-course dinner paired with perfect wines. September Chamber Mixer Join us at the September Chamber Mixer hosted by Strickler Agency, Inc. at 1200 E. With more than 900,000 small businesses in this Commonwealth, a well-designed energy efficiency or pollution prevention project can help small businesses cut operating costs and complement the economy, while simultaneously protecting the environment. The grants provide funding to projects that include auxiliary power units deployed as anti-idling technology for trucks, HVAC and boiler upgrades, high-efficiency lighting, solvent recovery systems and waste recycling systems. Applicants must be a for-profit corporation, limited liability corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship or other legal entity with 100 or fewer full-time employees. The grant-supported project must be located in Pennsylvania. Eligible projects must save the business a minimum of $500 and 25 percent annually in energy consumption or pollution related expenses. Businesses can apply for 50 percent matching funds of up to $9,500 to adopt or acquire energy-efficient or pollution-prevention equipment or procedures. Funding is eligible for those costs incurred between July 25, 2016 and June 30, 2017. Last year, DEP awarded 151 grants totaling nearly $1 million to Pennsylvania businesses to support pollution prevention and energy efficient upgrades, spurring more than $2.9 million in private investment. Applicants will be considered on a first come, first served basis. Applications will be accepted until fiscal year 2016-17 funds are exhausted or April 14, 2017, whichever occurs first. Champions of older workers The Department of Aging is now accepting nominations from older worker friendly employers for the 2016 Pennsylvania Hall of Fame of Champions of Older Workers. September Lunch & Learns This month, the Chamber will hold two Lunch & Learn seminars at its office, 100 Lincoln Way East. The first on Thursday, September 8 will cover health and welfare compliance presented by Frances Horn, JD, PHR of ChamberChoice. Any size employer can benefit from this seminar as we discuss health compliance as it applies to employee benefit plans and Human Resource concerns. Active Shooter Training on Nov. 8 What would you do in the event of a violent situation in your workplace? Would your employees know how to react? The Chamber is hosting a half-day Active Shooter Training on Tuesday, November 8; time and location are TBA. This seminar will feature unique safety training by Proactive Securities, a local company comprised of law enforcement professionals with more than 50 years of collective experience. Seminar: Managing Stress Managing stress is like managing time: it’s all about managing yourself. Leadership Franklin County Advanced will present a seminar led by John R. Rodgers of Dale Carnegie Training on Friday, September 30 at the Conference Center at Shippensburg University where you will assess your current reactions to stress and explore ways to clarify where you have a measure of control. Stress takes a heavy toll on both people and organizations. Identifying different kinds of stress and the various responses people have will help you identify how to use more of your innate resiliency to stressful internal and external factors. In this half day session, you will learn to identify ways to convert common negative reactions into positive outlooks with clear action steps. Foundation to award technology grants to teachers The Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation will award grants totaling $15,600 to teachers in Franklin County, for using technology in an innovative way in their classrooms. Grants are available thanks to Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) contributors BB&T, M&T Bank, Orrstown Bank and Waste Management. Teachers will receive the grants at the Foundation’s annual luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, October 18.The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Orchards, 1580 Orchard Drive. Murals to be revealed Sept. 2 The Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) Design Committee has been coordinating a mural project that will add color and creativity to the public spaces of downtown Chambersburg. Area artists of all ages and skill levels were encouraged to participate. The murals will be unveiled during First Friday on September 2. Photos of the murals will be posted on Downtown Chambersburg’s Facebook page later this month. Economic development organization looks to Chambersburg’s future

The Chambersburg Area Development Corporation (CADC) has been part of the Chamber since 1960, its longest standing and most influential affiliate. CADC has worked to support many of the Chamber’s priorities as well as providing significant financial support to Downtown Chambersburg, Inc. and the Chamber Foundation. CADC has been an important contributor to the economic health of Chambersburg and Franklin County through the development of several business parks including Chambers-5, Fifth Avenue Commercial Center and, most recently, the United Business Park located off I-81 Exit 24. Today, businesses in these parks employ

At its annual meeting in June, CADC presented a forward-looking vision that focuses on reuse and revitalization as well as workforce development. Large scale industrial park development, while being critical to CADC over the past 55+ years, will not be CADC’s future focus. Strengthening the balance sheet is a top priority to ensure long-term financial viability of CADC. With several settlements recently closed at the United Business Park, CADC has reduced debt, established reserve funds and established an investment fund. This has set the stage to begin implementing other elements in the strategic plan.

Expanded Efforts to Build Community Wealth As a local not-for-profit economic development corporation, CADC’s income is reinvested in our community. CADC partners with other organizations to leverage private investment that results in improving our community. Two such initiatives were recently approved. CADC, in partnership with the Community Development Corporation (CDC), will assist with the start-up of GearHouse Brewing Co., a brew pub opening on Grant St. This project includes the adaptive reuse of the former Rendering of Central Junior High building plans Jennings Auto Body Shop, a historic structure that was once part of the sprawling complex of

This project will target homes in the central core that can be rehabilitated as single family units using Habitat’s successful model. The Franklin County Commissioners recently approved a $25,000 Housing Trust Fund grant to support this initiative. CADC will also focus on expanding its membership to encourage more involvement from businesses located in the Chambersburg area.

Mixer at Rhodes Grove Rhodes Grove Camp & Conference Center hosted the August Chamber Mixer providing a relaxing evening of refreshments and networking. Both Chambersburg Chamber and Greencastle Chamber members had the opportunity to attend and receive facility tours on their 33-acre campus. Rhodes Grove is a Christian camp and conference center that was founded in 1917 and is surrounded by the beautiful farmland of the Cumberland Valley. Resources to prepare your business for overtime rule changes

Non-profit Organizations & Associations With less than three months before the implementation of the Obama administration’s new federal overtime eligibility rule for “white collar” employees, it is crucial for employers to familiarize themselves with the rule in its entirety and start preparing for compliance by the December 1, 2016 effective date. The rule increases the salary eligibility threshold of overtime pay for full-time salaried workers by more than 100 percent – from the current $23,660 annual threshold ($455 per week) to $47,476 annually ($913 per week). It also contains a provision that automatically updates the salary threshold every three years, based on the 40th percentile of full time salaried workers in the lowest wage region of the country. Last month the Exchange Club of Chambersburg members took 42 youth shopping at Target for school clothing. Staff from Aerotek and Youth Advocate Programs also assisted with the shopping.

Decorating Den Interiors is sponsoring/organizing their 3rd Annual Ladies Night on Thursday, September 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wood Center in The Capitol Theatre, a fundraiser for the theatre. Chambersburg Hospital recently awarded Kayla Blair, a nursing student at Mount Alyosius College, the Kristen Runyon Memorial Scholarship. Blair plans to earn a Master’s in nursing and eventually become a nursing educator. The family of the late Kristin Runyon along with officials from Chambersburg Hospital chose Blair based on her grades, commitment and attitude towards her schooling. The Kristin Runyon Memorial Scholarship awards $3,000 each year to a student currently enrolled in a full-time registered nurse education program. The Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center and the Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance received a $10,000 donation from Franklin County Cyclists (FCC) this summer. Funds were raised during the FCC’s Century Ride for Breast Cancer ride that ranges from 13 mile stretches to 100 miles. It is said that “we often take for granted that which deserves our most gratitude.” For one volunteer, gratitude was aptly expressed this week as staff at South Mountain Restoration Center visited Menno Haven resident Joan Arnold to commend her for years of volunteer service. Members of the Chambersburg Hospital offer a prenatal breastfeeding class the first Tuesday of each month. They also offer a free breastfeeding support group held the fourth Tuesday of the month. The second is a design-build contract for the Shook Home Rehab & Wellness Center located in Chambersburg. Wilson College graduate Susan Breakefield Fulton recently pledged $500,000 for a new veterinary building to replace the Helen M. Beach ’24 Veterinary Medical Center. The facility houses surgery suites, skill labs, dog kennels, a cat room, offices and is a hub for students in Wilson’s four-year veterinary medical technology program. The new center has tentatively been named the Breakefield Veterinary Medical Center, in recognition of Fulton and her two sisters, Xandra Breakefield and Beverly Breakefield, who also graduated from Wilson.
