On Thursday, September 24, the Chamber will host two, half-day workshops led by customer service expert Bill Drury entitled, “A Passion for Service (How to Win Customers and Reduce Lost Sales).” The workshops, sponsored by Alpha Media, will be held at the Chambersburg Country Club with a session from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and another from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. At the workshop, you’ll acquire skills to attract and retain customers. Q&A with new Chamber president, Noel Purdy Noel Purdy has been with the Chamber over seven years, during which she has successfully grown the Chamber Foundation and organized countless downtown events while keeping her thumb on the pulse of the issues concerning Chambersburg. Noel’s extensive knowledge and proven leadership within the Chamber and our affiliate organizations is what makes her an excellent choice for the role of Chamber president to succeed David G. Sciamanna. Last month, I sat down with Noel to learn more about her and discuss her insight on the Chamber and vision for its future as she steps into her new role this month. Below outlines highlights from our conversation: What do you want the Chamber membership to know about you that they may not know already? I live in downtown Chambersburg in a federal style house (which we are renovating) with my husband Jeremy and three-year-old daughter Gwendolyn. I walk to work and go home for lunch most days. I’m a runner and jog quite a bit with my daughter. I push her in a bright yellow stroller along the rail trail. Gwen has her own running shoes, but she still enjoys the ride rather than hitting the pavement herself. On a hot day, you might find us cooling off from a run in the Conococheague along Wilson College or in the splash pad at Mike Waters Park. I really enjoy living in the heart of the community and having the opportunity to easily access some of its unique offerings - both well-known and lesser-known. In your opinion, what are the top assets of the greater Chambersburg community? I think Chambersburg’s location is a top asset. It’s close to Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and New York City...but not too close. The mountains, parks, farmland and waterways provide a beautiful backdrop that supports a variety of lifestyles and recreational opportunities. Its location along the I-81 corridor also makes it prime for continued commercial development. The challenge for a community like Chambersburg will be to position itself for continued growth and development in a way that supports “livability,” or the assets that make this a great place to live, now and in the future. In your opinion, what are the three top benefits the Chamber offers to our members? 1. Networking 2. Unique marketing and advertising channels 3. The economic and quality of life programming that we offer through the Chamber and its affiliates that is unique to our organizational structure What do you hope to accomplish within the first year in your new role as Chamber President? I’m really looking forward to a seamless transition with the leadership change and keeping everything on track while learning more about our members and their needs. Where do you see the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce in five years? I see our membership base growing as well as having a stronger, more diverse economy. The Chamber is well positioned to support our current and future members and to improve the quality of life in the greater Chambersburg area. Healthy Franklin County website

Enjoy professional baseball - and perhaps see some future major leaguers - at Chamber Night with The Hagerstown Suns on Thursday, August 20 at Municipal Stadium, 274 E. The Chamber has partnered with Franklin County Area Development Corp., Franklin County Government, Keystone Health, Summit Health and United Way of Franklin County to support a “Healthy Franklin County” website that provides a single, shared resource for information about the health, education, financial stability and wellbeing of Franklin County.

The game starts at 7:05 p.m. with a special picnic for Chamber members and their guests from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and include admission and the picnic. B2B Expo to feature six seminars What is your business’s digital footprint? Learn strategies to increase your digital outreach through six different seminars at the B2B Digital Expo on Thursday, October 8 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Green Grove Gardens. The Expo is designed to promote business-to-business relationships while providing professional development opportunities. Specifically, the website will provide a resource for residents, nonprofits and businesses to learn about quality of life indicators by providing the most current information, research and statistics. The website will also promote local opportunities for personal involvement, volunteerism and connectivity to help further engage individuals and businesses with the community. “If we want to continue seeing improvement in our community, then we must continue focusing on driving real change through key issues like workforce development and early childhood education,” said David G. Sciamanna, vice president of the Chamber. The Healthy Franklin County website stems from a larger effort to address key issues facing our area based on the Franklin County Prosperity Indicators Report released in December 2012. Following the release of the report, local organizations formed a Prosperity Taskforce to ensure these identified key issues are being addressed through strategically refining and developing programs and initiatives. “Providing accurate information so it’s readily available for the public will show our community’s strengths as well as its areas for improvement,” continued Sciamanna, who has been a driving force of the prosperity report initiatives. “Individuals and businesses can learn about the issues and how to contribute to the effort. Real, effective change can only happen when people understand the current reality.” The partnering organizations recently reviewed proposals from IT companies and selected iWAT LLC to design and manage the Healthy Franklin County website. Farmers Market shows kids the power of fresh fruits and vegetables

During summer vacation months the 11/30 Network committees have been hard at work scheduling upcoming events for members and other area young professionals. The calendar balances fun, social events with valuable professional development and volunteer opportunities. While a number of events are still in the planning stages, registration is up and running for the following events (members only and familyfriendly events are indicated): • College Night Happy Hour - Tuesday, August 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Good-Ta-Go. Proudly wear clothes with your alma mater, and we’ll have some fun networking activities in store. • Chamber Night @ the Hagerstown Suns - Thursday, August 20 from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. Many of you may already know Chambersburg has its own farmer’s market, held from late May to early October at 50 North Main Street in downtown. The North Square Farmers Market is a vehicle for local growers, producers and artisans to sell their product, and gives us all the chance to support the local economy. One program that you may not have heard of is the POP, or Power of Produce, Club for kids ages 3-12 organized by Healthy Communities Partnership of Greater Franklin County. The POP Club was introduced to the market in 2014 with four simple goals in mind: • To increase fruit and vegetable consumption among children. • Get children enthused about healthy, nutritious eating. • Increase support and awareness about the farmers market. • Teach children about the importance of supporting local farmers. The program is run every Saturday at the same time as the farmers market. To keep track of participation each kid is given a card, which is kept at the market and stamped for record. Then, each kid receives a $2 wooden token to buy only fresh fruits or vegetables at the market. During the first year of the program, the POP Club enrolled 410 children. The children visited the market a total of 1,821 times during the 22-week season. Parents of children visiting the market during the last two weeks of the season were asked to fill out a survey about the program. In all, parents of 86 children completed surveys. Of these, 73 percent of respondents said their child’s eating habits changed during the program and 78 percent said their family’s shopping habits changed as a result of the program. Most families reporting no change stated that their family already consumed large amounts of healthy, local produce before the program. As apparent from survey feedback, the first year of POP was a success. Many parents reported their children loved to pick their own produce and tried new fruits and vegetables as a result. Parents appreciated the program for encouraging healthy behavior in a fun, new way. The market saw drastic increases in sales volumes, which has an impact on the local economy. Many of the farmers and vendors thanked Healthy Communities Partnership for spearheading this effort.

Grocery Outlet comes to town Congratulations to the Grocery Outlet for celebrating its grand opening in June with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The bargain market, operated by Jason & Victoria Lyman, is located at 1695 Lincoln Way East. The Grocery Outlet brand is considered the largest “extremevalue” grocer in the U.S. Most stores are independently operated by locally-based families, like the Chambersburg store.

Community Substation opens On July 9, the Chambersburg Police Department hosted an open house at its new Community Substation located at 41 West Washington Street. Police officers met community members and their new neighbors to celebrate with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The substation will have patrol officers there at various hours with a sign indicating when they are available. Although there won’t be officers there all the time, should someone have reason to go to the substation outside of regular hours, the person could call dispatch and ask to meet someone at the station.

The PA Chamber of Business & Industry’s 31st Annual Chamber Dinner will be held on Monday, September 21 at Hershey Lodge. Members of the Chambersburg Chamber are invited to network with business leaders, lawmakers and state officials, as well as hear from awardwinning actor/producer Kevin Spacey.

I was first introduced to the Chamber through my career with Patriot Federal Credit Union. As a branch manager I started to attend Chamber mixers. It was a way for me to start to get out in the community and get to know other professionals. This past year I decided to participate in the Leadership Franklin County program through a Chamber affiliate. The program was an amazing opportunity to not only grow professionally, but personally as well. It gave me a sense of our community and the incredible opportunities that exist to get involved in community events and to develop professionally. I also feel very fortunate to work for Patriot Federal Credit Union, which has given me this opportunity to grow in my career and to get involved in our community. I am looking forward to exploring volunteer opportunities within the Chamber and am thankful to have been asked to join the Sip & Savor Committee. Being that this is only the second year for this event, I was excited to get involved and have an opportunity to make this event really special. We have focused this year on how we can make the event inviting and fun for a diverse group of individuals; I think we are succeeding at this. We have been able to add some new, exciting, innovative aspects that I’m sure everyone will enjoy. I encourage everyone to come out and have a fun night with us on Saturday, September 12. Gov. Wolf vetoes pension reform bill On July 9, Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed a comprehensive public pension reform bill that lawmakers put on his desk June 30. Senate Bill 1 would have placed new state and public school employees into a 401(k)style retirement plan as part of a plan to help address a $53 billion and growing public pension unfunded liability and preserve earned benefits for current employees and retirees. In a statement, the governor said he vetoed the bill because it didn’t “provide immediate cost savings to taxpayers and does not maximize long-term savings for taxpayers.” While it’s true that the compromise version of the bill that passed the General Assembly had less short-term savings than previous iterations of S.B. 1, it still would have resulted in $11 billion in long-term savings to taxpayers. This is far more meaningful than the governor’s plan to let a previous, insufficient law (Act 120 of 2010) take more time to work and floating a $3 billion bond to pay down the immediate liability as a way to generate cost savings. As the state’s biggest cost-driver, the pension debt is the main reason why Pennsylvania’s credit rating has been repeatedly downgraded in recent years; is driving up costs in local school districts and taking money out of classrooms; and threatens every state taxpayer with new and higher taxes. As budget negotiations continue, reforms need to be enacted that at the very least slow down the steady growth of the unfunded liability and hopefully begin to pay down the debt. This also needs to happen before any talks of new spending take place. Pennsylvanians are calling on the Governor and Senate lawmakers to support pension reforms for the benefit of every Pennsylvanian. Cook Race attracts runners of all ages The 12th Annual Tim & Susan Cook Memorial One-Mile Race was held the morning of July 11 with 130 participants. Friends and family of the runners came to cheer them on from the sidelines as racers crossed the finish line. People of all ages participated, with ages ranging from three to 80. Matt Wisner, a rising senior at Carlisle Area Senior High School, won the men’s/ boy’s race with a time of 4:25. Wisner, 17, currently competes in track and field as well as swimming. Maddie Kole, 17, won the women’s/girl’s race with a time of 5:18. Kole is also a rising senior at Carlisle Area Senior High School where she competes in track and field and cross country. Finishing second for the men’s/boy’s race was Andrew Carpenter, 22, with a time of 4:28. The third-place winner was Jack Conant, 25, with a time of 4:32. Finishing second for the women’s/girl’s race was Sarah Boward, 36, with a time of 5:20. Alex Orr, 19, placed third with a time of 5:33.

Scoop-a-Palooza serves up summer fun People of all ages enjoyed all of the ice cream they could eat on Saturday during the 6th Annual Scoop-a-Palooza, Ice Cream for Education. The fundraiser for the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation attracted nearly 800 people. “We’re thrilled at how big this event has grown,” said Robin Harmon, executive director for the Foundation. “The energy level was fantastic and everyone had a great time.” According to Harmon, proceeds from the event contribute to the organization’s leadership and workforce development programs. At Scoop-a-Palooza, sponsored by ACNB Bank, ice cream vendors set up shop in the high school’s cafeteria with flavors ranging from the traditional vanilla and chocolate to maple bacon. Attendees received a book of tickets and voted for their favorite in each of six categories. Windy Knoll took the top prize, the Golden Scoop Award, again this year, with Peanut Butter Overload. Trickling Springs Creamery came in second with Peanut Butter and Jelly and third place went to Windy Knoll’s Salty Snapper. Trickling Springs Creamery placed first in the vanilla, chocolate and creative categories. First place in the fruit category went to Windy Knoll’s Black Raspberry.

All of the top placing winners received Cook Race medals, as well as various prizes donated by 101.5 Bob Rocks. Also receiving Cook Race medals were the top three finishers in several age categories. Proceeds from the race are donated to the Tim & Susan Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to Chambersburg Area Senior High School students. Tim and Susan Cook were both 49 when they died in 2002 as a result of a car accident. The Cooks were dedicated to education; Tim taught at CASHS and Susan worked at Shippensburg University. The Cook scholarships are awarded by the Chambersburg Area School District Foundation each May. Tom Cook, Tim’s brother, participated in the race again this year. Susan’s sister, Joan Violante, who lives out of town, made a special trip to Chambersburg with her daughter and son-in-law to participate in the race. Both Cook and Violante placed within the top three runners in their age brackets, respectively. The Chamber partners with Chambersburg Road Runners Club to present the memorial race each year. New for 2015 was the addition of a kid’s choice category. The kids chose Misty Meadow Farm Creamery’s Cotton Candy as their favorite and Dietrich’s Ice Cream’s Superman as the runner up. There was a three-way tie for third place between Misty Meadow Farm Creamery’s Chocolate Cake Batter, Trickling Springs’ Chocolate Cookies and Windy Knoll’s Black Raspberry. Ice cream vendors donate their ice cream for the event. Participants this year included Dietrich’s Ice Cream, The Meadows of Chambersburg, Misty Meadow Farm Creamery, South Mountain Creamery, Trickling Springs Creamery and Windy Knoll Ice Cream. New this year was the Homemade Ice Cream Contest sponsored by Susquehanna Bank. Four amateur ice cream creators showed off their best ice cream recipe, which was judged by seasoned ice cream vendors and a random event attendee. Judges included Katie Kennedy of Trickling Springs Creamery, a representative from Windy Knoll and audience member Carolyn Doncheski. Bill Schaeffer took first place in the contest with Cinnamon Cream, winning a $75 gift certificate to Johnnie’s Restaurant & Hotel Service. Michelle Paulnock came in second with Vanilla. John and Carolyn Dice followed with Orange Pineapple and Trisha Harmon rounded out the field with Creamsicle.


ChambersFest attracts thousands, brings economic boost


Lincoln is topic of Sept. seminar The final Civil War seminar in 2015 will be held from September 24-27 and focus on one of the most well-known American presidents, Abraham Lincoln. The seminar, titled “Lincoln”, will feature bus tours of Gettysburg battlefield and the John Wilkes Booth Escape Tour as well as sessions covering topics such as the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln myths and hoaxes, and his assassination.

This year’s annual ChambersFest celebration attracted approximately 10,000 people to the area for a variety of events. Residents enjoyed fun, family-friendly activities while local retailers and restaurants saw a boost in business. “Downtown business owners rank ChambersFest as one of the top three community-wide events that bring in revenue” said Noel Purdy, president of the Chamber. “It’s a festival that boosts sales at local businesses, but also brings the community together with fun, family-friendly activities for all ages.” More than 13 events were coordinated by various local organizations as part of ChambersFest, including the largest event, Old Market Day. The lively street festival was a popular event once again, featuring food and craft vendors as well as entertainment on two stages. Downtown Business Council organized the event, which was held on July 18.

Jane Jamrozy, an attendee of the seminar in May who participated with her husband, stated, “we have learned so much, gained friendships and appreciate the hard work of everyone involved [in the seminars]. Ausherman Bros. Real Estate, Inc. recently announced that Grant T. Ausherman was awarded the prestigious SRA membership designation by the Appraisal Institute. The designation is held by real estate solutions providers who are experienced in the analysis and valuation of residential real property. To obtain the SRA designation, an appraiser must receive a passing grade on seven examinations that reflect 181 hours of classroom instruction and that test the appraiser’s knowledge of appraisal principles, residential valuation techniques, report writing and standards of professional practice. Furthermore, the appraiser must receive credit for 4,500 hours of experience which must meet strict criteria and pass the rigorous demonstration report writing requirement enforced by the Appraisal Institute. Volunteers have reached the halfway mark in the construction of Habitat for Humanity’s 35th house in Franklin County. This house, on Limestone Drive in Chambersburg, will be the home of the Louis family and is being built in partnership with Thrivent Financial. Habitat For Humanity executive director Mark Story received a $60,000 check from local Thrivent Financial representative Marlin Maclay. The Louis home is scheduled to be completed in late October at which time a housed dedication ceremony will be held. Habitat volunteers have been building homes in Franklin County since 1994. August mixer at SERVPRO You also won’t want to miss August’s opportunity for networking at the outdoor mixer on Thursday the 13th from 5 to 7 p.m. at SERVPRO of Chambersburg, 190 Industrial Drive. Gift card, certificate expiration date information In 2009, Congress passed the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act, which set consumer protections for gift cards based on many state laws. The law provides that gift cards cannot expire within five years from the date they were activated and generally limits inactivity fee on gift cards except in certain circumstances, such as if there has been no transaction for at least 12 months. The federal law creates a floor for regulation and leaves room for state regulation on redeeming gift cards for cash and unclaimed property provisions.

At this half-day seminar, you’ll learn why one generation is team oriented while the other is fiercely independent; and why one works for rewards and another works only if the work is perceived as interesting. Learn how to then take this knowledge and get the most out of each group by using the appropriate motivational strategies. Tickets are $99 per person and include continental breakfast. New LFC Youth students bond at summer retreat Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth class of 2016 held their summer retreat in July at Manito. They used the day to get to know each other better and receive an introduction to leadership.

In Pennsylvania, gift certificates unredeemed for two years after the expiration of their redemption period, or five years from the date of issuance if they contain no expiration date, are presumed abandoned and escheat to the state. Pennsylvania law holds that gift cards/certificates are written contracts to perform a service or deliver a good by a specified date upon presentation of the card/certificate. However, should such card/ certificate expire (i.e. contract expire), the issuer has no legal obligation to perform the service or product after the expiration period. Bear in mind that money on a gift card cannot expire for at least five years from the date the card was purchased, or from the last date any additional money was loaded onto the card. If the expiration date listed on the card is earlier than these dates, the money can be transferred to a replacement card at no cost. These summaries should be used for general informational purposes and not as a legal reference. The day began with ice breakers lead by Christina Yoder of F&M Trust. Dr. Bob Whitmore of the Growth Coach and Mary Beth Williams of Wilson College then led the students through a variety of trust-building activities on the Manito grounds. After being treated to a barbeque lunch by the Manito staff, the group was given the opportunity to climb the 50-foot Manito tower. The students learned to work together and to support and encourage each other. The day ended with a reception for students and their families. Students attend the LFC Youth program at no charge thanks to program sponsor Wilson College.


20th Annual Golf Tournament

The 20th Annual Chamber Golf Scramble in June at Penn National Founder’s Course was a huge success with over 140 golfers registered. The weather was bright and sunny which made for a hot day on the course, but the golfers endured thanks to the cold drinks tent provided by ACNB Bank and beer cart beverages provided by ACE Distributing. Spherion was the Title Sponsor.
