President’s Greeting Show-Me Chapter Members, I am extremely excited to get the new year started! We ended 2010-2011 on an extremely high note and will be receiving four awards during ANI later this month. I would like to build on that momentum and continue to provide you with current and relevant educational opportunities. Please feel free to reach out to me or any of the HFMA officers if you have ideas for topics. For a little about myself, I was born and raised in Republic, MO and attend Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State University) in Springfield, MO. My healthcare background started at Sister’s of Mercy in Springfield as a staff auditor, following that I became Audit Manager and then Audit Senior Manager for CHAN Healthcare auditors serving St. John’s in Joplin, MO. Currently I am the Business Director for Surgical and Intravascular Services for St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis, MO. I have two wonderful boys ages 5 and 2 and a lovely wife who keeps all of us in line. I am looking forward to this upcoming year! Thanks for making this a successful chapter. Show-Me of Missouri Chapter Wins Multiple Awards By: Jennifer Ogden HFMA’s Annual National Institute was held in Orlando, FL at the Gaylord Palm’s Resort June 26-29. There were approximately 4,500 attendees and 1,500 vendors in attendance. Keynote speakers included Peter Orszag, Former Director, Office of Management and Budget and Vice Chairman, Institutional Clients Group, Citigroup, Inc., Maureen Bisognano, President and CEO, Institute for Healthcare, Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, Head Coach, Duke University and U.S. Olympic championship basketball teams and Mark Thompson, Author, Success Built to Last and Former Chief Customer Experience Officer, Schwab. HFMA CEO Dick Clarke also spoke about defining value and how to close the gap between what we pay for in healthcare and the quality we receive for that investment. The 58th Annual Chapter Presidents Dinner and Meeting was held on Tuesday evening. Greg Adams, 2011-2012 HFMA
National Chair led the meeting and chapters were recognized for their achievements during the 2010-2011 chapter year. Below is a listing of all the awards presented to the chapters in Region 8! 2010-2011 was an amazing year, the Show-Me Chapter received four awards – thank you to everyone who made this possible! Vicki Mills served as our Regional Exec and Teri Reger was our Regional Exec Elect this past year. Both did a fantastic job for our region – they deserve a big thank you as well! Region 8 Connection Submitted By: Teri Reger HFMA greetings! My name is Teri Reger and I am honored to introduce myself as your Region 8 Regional Executive for the June 2011 through May 2012 chapter year. I am a member of the Greater St. Louis Chapter as well as your representative on the HFMA Regional Executive Council. The purposes of HFMA’s Regional Executive program are: • To serve as the primary volunteer and policy link between the chapters and HFMA National; • To assist chapter leaders in serving members; • To foster a dialogue and effective communications between the national and chapter levels of HFMA; • To represent the needs and interests of chapter leaders to the HFMA Board and management, and
To encourage chapters to collaborate and help other chapters. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to my predecessor, Vicki Mills, for her service as our
Regional Executive this past year and for being a wonderful mentor. She represented our region extremely well and has set the bar very high! In addition, please welcome Mike Dewerff from the Iowa Chapter as your Regional Executive -Elect. HFMA’s Region 8 is made up of nine very strong chapters – North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Sunflower, Heart of America, Show-Me of Missouri and Greater St. Louis. Congratulations to each and every one of them for completing a successful year with outstanding achievements that will be honored at this year’s Annual National Institute in Orlando in June. All nine chapters in Region 8 earned multiple awards totaling 35 awards across the region! What a testament to the dedication and commitment of our chapter leaders to providing exceptional service to their members!! The HFMA Chair’s Theme for 2011-2012 is “Believe to Achieve”. Strengthening Physician-Hospital, continued... Conclusion Strengthening physician relationships is a key component of hospital and health system success. With the increasing integration of the physician into the hospital and health system organizations, it is important to create stronger alignment in all three areas.
Case Study Evaluating a sample hospital (“Hospital A”) shows a typical profile of a hospital in the database. This hospital, a 200-bed hospital, has above-average financial indicators and provides strong community care to a growing, affluent, suburban market. The diagnostic shows that Hospital A has substantially higher -than-average alignment of purpose, but average alignment in clinical activity and economic areas. (See Exhibit 4.) Moreover, market indicators suggest that the urgency of creating stronger physician alignment is lower than average.

Given the relatively weaker alignment within clinical activity and economic areas, Hospital A has embarked on investigating the tools that directly impact these two areas of alignment.

Further investigation of Hospital A shows that the hospital’s administration has been actively working to create a common vision with its physicians. This common vision has led to direct physician leadership in setting the strategic course of Hospital A. However, while Hospital A has kept up with the national trends, it has not been overly aggressive at using the tools that might advance
