Dear Members,

June 2014

As I write this letter, one word comes to mind to sum up the 2014 vintage so far--EARLY. With an early bud break, which resulted from a relatively mild winter and a warm, dry spring, it looks like harvest may begin at least two weeks ahead of normal or average. This means that harvest could possibly begin as early as mid-August. for us. Whew! But although we wanted more rain last winter, we look forward to a good and uneventful growing season this summer. Last month we saw many of you at wine dinners Jenny and I hosted in Southern California. We were particularly gratified to have these events sell out so quickly. In the case of our dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s WP24 in downtown Los Angeles, it sold out within a few hours. We DO have the best fans, so thank you!!

Dick with the brothers Puck at the WP24 Wine Dinner

We are excited that so many of you have signed up for our third “Pillars of Pinot” Foxen-Martinelli Wine Cruise on Oceania, Barcelona to Lisbon, June 28 to July 7, 2015. Jenny has been busy planning our shipboard seminars with Regina Martinelli, and is already beginning to stash away wines from our library for some rare and tasty on-board surprises for the winemaker dinner. I’ve enclosed a cruise flyer for your information and consideration. And if you have any questions or interest, I encourage you to call Food & Wine Trails at (707) 526-2922 in the very near future. Or other questions about the cruise, please feel free to contact Jenny at [email protected]. As you can see in our upcoming events calendar, Jenny and I continue to have a busy travel schedule this year. And two of our favorite events of the year are our upcoming and members-only: the annual Master & Commander luncheon on June 14; and the Anchor Club on August 2. And this year, we’ve added a special library dinner on Friday, June 13 at the new Mattei’s Tavern that is open to all our club members. Chef Robbie of Mattei’s is working on a unique menu as I write this letter. Seating is very limited so don’t miss out. And speaking of events...Tasting Room and Club Manager, John Tevis, is once again hosting special weekly “FOXEN Roots” tastings onThursday and Friday. In recent weeks Billy and I have been combing through our extensive wine library for some new and enlightening tastings from our early years for you to enjoy when visiting the new June 2014 Payment Detail tasting room this summer. Each week’s selection is Anchor Club Members: posted on our Facebook page, so check it out! $141.70 (including your 15% discount, CA state tax, and CA shipping)

I look forward to seeing many of you this summer. Cheers! Richard Doré

Billy’s Winemaker Notes

2012 Pinot Noir, John Sebastiano Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills: John

Sebastiano Vineyard struggled during its infancy-- due the extreme nature of the site and some difficult vintages. Shallow, rocky soils and exposure to hard afternoon winds are tough terroir in which to grow up. With the 2012 vintage, the vines seem to have reached a point where they have outgrown all of their earlier growing struggles. Foxen leases three completely different, distinctive clonal blocks at this beautiful and dramatic vineyard on the eastern edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Block 19B (clone 2A) is the smallest, at 2.3 acres, but is the healthiest because it is the most wind protected. Block 25A (Dijon clone 667) sits on 2.7 acres on top of the canyon, and here the subsoil is exposed at the surface, limiting root growth and therefore vine growth. Block 34(Dijon clone 115), nicknamed “calf-burner”, is 3.5 acres of a 45 degree slope facing the west wind. Needless to say, it’s a challenging vineyard to farm, so its really rewarding when the vines and wine reach that point where you can say “the time has come”. Lots of site specific aromatics and flavors here: mulberry, sage, green gage plum, orange rind and concord grape. All these elements are enveloped in a light, delicate body. Enjoy now to 2020. • Production: 1560 cases • Retail: $48

2012 Syrah, Toasted Rope, Santa Ynez Valley: This wine always brings a sense of astonishment to the

crush-pad during harvest. That we could take 5 tons of Syrah ( Vogelzang Vineyard Block N, clone 01) and 1 ton of Viognier (Vogelzang Vineyard Block T, R1 clone) picked on the same morning of October 12 and combine them through the destemmer and into a 6 ton fermenter always freaks out the harvest interns. “That’s way too much Viognier!” “No worries” I tell them, “We’ve been making this wine since 2006, and it just keeps getting better”. The wine was aged 16 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels and bottled, like most Foxen reds, without fining or filtration. Its always suprising how Zin-like this wine is on the palate. Fragrant violet, plum blossom, berry and watermelon Jolly Rancher aromatics lift out of the glass. This wine drinks very easy, and will for the next 5-6 years. I did the ultimate food matchup with the Toasted Rope: Sloppy-Joes on Kings Hawaiian rolls. • Production: 290 cases • Retail: $44

2012 Cuvée Jeanne Marie, Williamson Doré Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley: This wine has evolved

over the past few vintages into a Grenache-dominated blend from what originally was a Grenache/Syrah/ Mourvèdre blend. It came about through the realization that I REALLY LIKE the Grenache from Dick and Jenny’s vineyard; and I felt it was a better wine when we left out the Syrah and added a splash more Mourvèdre to spice it up. My protocol was to vinify and age the Grenache and Mourvèdre as separate components (17 months in 350-liter and 500-liter puncheons, with no new oak). And then before bottling, I blended in the Mourvèdre into the Grenache until we got to our “sweet spot”. It was bottled without fining or filtration. Our history with the Cuvée Jeanne Marie dates back to our 1999 vintage. Over the years the blend has been adjusted and fine-tuned; but I believe that what we have focused on since the 2011 vintage is the real deal. The 2012 has aromatics not unlike Pinot Noir--black cherry and boysenberry. But the pomegranate and watermelon rind are telltale notes of Grenache and Mourvèdre. Deep berry flavors and a long finish with ample tannins tell me this wine will need one of Dicky Dore’s paellas for the perfect pairing. • Production: 312 cases • Retail: $40 FOXEN Vineyard & Winery • 7600 Foxen Canyon Rd • Santa Maria, CA • 93454 • Tel. 805.937.4251 • foxenvineyard.com
