Dear Members,

October 2016

While our 2016 harvest began in the second week of August, it was thankfully not quite as early as last year. As I write this, we are feeling very thankful for the mild and uneventful weather conditions from August through most of September, which has allowed Billy an almost leisurely pace to our picking decisions. Our pinot harvest began at our Block 8 at Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley and will finish up in the Sta. Rita Hills with our blocks at La Encantada Vineyard. And so far our yields have been nearly perfect (thanks to average rainfall totals earlier in the year), and the quality of the fruit has been excellent. I’m happy to say that 2016 is shaping up to be an outstanding vintage! Once again, it was another busy year for Jenny, Kaitlin and me as we traversed from one coast to another. And October will be another active travel month as Jenny will be in Florida the first half of this month, and we will be in Texas together for the annual Beef Steak Alzheimer’s benefit in Ft. Worth on the 15th. And in November Jenny and Kaitlin will finish off their year in San Francisco at Farallon’s PinotFest, while I’ll be island hopping for our distributor trade tastings in Hawaii. Last month Jenny began pulling wines from the wine library in preparation for our 2017 Rhône River Cruise, July 16-23 on Uniworld (see enclosed brochure). During the cruise, we’ve decided that we will feature a couple of special vertical tastings--Block 43-Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinots and our Tinaquaic Vineyard Syrahs from our most highly acclaimed vintages. In addition, there will be some library wine surprises as we begin the cruise in Avignon and end in Lyon. For more information and registration, go to foodandwinetrails.com/foxen2017 or call (800) 367-5348. In the immediate future, we are excited about next month’s optional Anchor and M&C Club “94+ Point Trio”, featuring the last of our favorites pinots from the highly-acclaimed 2013 vintage--Fe Ciega, John Sebastiano and Block 8-Bien Nacido Vineyards. In order to plan for this, we stored away just enough bottles to make up this special shipment, before they were entirely sold out. Please call the tasting room at (805) 937-4251 or email our club manager, Katie Longoria, at [email protected] to “opt in” for this November shipment by Sunday, October 23rd. This is a great opportunity to stock up on our favorite 2013 Pinots for the holidays. Supplies are limited, so don’t miss out. And finally, the initial 2014 Pinot Noir reviews are in and they are outstanding. Robert Parker Jr, Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck’s reviewed our 2014 Pinots, giving our entire line up 90-95 points, with our 2014 Pinot Noir Block 43-Bien Nacido Vineyard (will be in your December shipment) garnering a whopping 95 points! Our 2013 Range 30 West (in this shipment) received 91 points, noting it as a “rich, ripe and forward effort...beauty”. Stay tuned for more reviews! Cheers! Dick Doré

Billy’s Winemaker Notes

October 2016

2013 Pinot Noir, Solomon Hills Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley: Solomon Hills Vineyard is located on the western edge of the Santa Maria Valley AVA, and our Block 50 is situated on a gentle, southwest-facing slope. Our 2013 vintage is comprised of the Dijon Clones 115 and 667, and Pommard. The wine was aged for 16+ months in medium-plus toast, french oak barrels--of which 30% were new. What truly makes this Pinot Noir unique is the sandy soil on which the vines grow--resulting in Pinot Noir with distinctive, delicate saline and mineral qualities. Pretty aromas of red summer fruit, and delicate notes of cinnamon and clove greet you up front, and the pallet is soft and velvety. This pinot’s nuanced salinity make it a perfect pairing with seafood--particularly salmon and ahi. Although this wine is very tasty now, it will continue to improve and age nicely over the next 5-7 years. • 94 Points - Wine Advocate • 92 Points - Burghound • Production: 500 cases • Retail: $58.00

2014 Syrah, Toasted Rope, Santa Ynez Valley: This is always a challenging, yet fun project during harvest--monitoring the development

of two different grapes that will become one wine on the crush pad! Cofermentation is a challenge, but has its rewards. Our 2014 Toasted Rope is 82% Syrah and 18% Viognier from Vogelzang Vineyard in Happy Canyon. We dumped the Syrah grapes into the de-stemmer while metering in the Viognier grapes every so often, to get an even mixing. The grapes co-fermented in an open-top tank, punched down 2-3 times daily, then de-juiced and pressed off when dry like any other red wine. This Toasted Rope aged 16+ months in Hungarian oak 500-liter puncheons-of which 50% were new. The Viognier brings a lift to the spicy violet aromatics, while the Syrah brings a firm complexity of plum, berries, black pepper and sage--all the while it is velvety and voluptuous on the finish. I found this Syrah feminine for a Syrah—in a very good way. The Toasted Rope holds up well to medium-spiced Mexican-style cuisine, and is a no-brainer pairing with a barbecued lamb chops and grilled fall vegetables. It should age well over the next 8-9 years. • 90-92 Points Wine Advocate • 91 Points - California Grapevine • 90 Points - Wine Spectator • Production: 420 cases • Retail: $44

2013 Range 30 West, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara: This foxen 7200 Bordeaux-style blend is comprised of 52% Merlot from Vogelzang Vineyard and 48% Cabernet Franc from Star Lane and Vogelzang Vineyards in the heart of

Happy Canyon. The wine was aged in French oak barrels (70% new) for a total of 22 months, with the final blend put together in the winter of 2015. The resulting wine is a savory and rich blend: think red velvet cake/dusty cocoa/plumcake aromas that are very inviting. On the palette there is a mouthful of red currant, cherry and chocolate, with subtle notes of pencil lead, green peppercorns and tobacco--that are all enveloped in smooth tannins. Enjoy this wine with a savory meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a red wine reduction sauce, or a nice fall beef stew. I found it delicious now, but you will be rewarded by laying some down for another 7-8 years.• 93 Points - Wine Enthusiast • 91 Points - Wine Advocate • Production: 400 cases • Retail: $44
