No animals required Pitsco helps students build and test the strength of bridges and towers Greetings in this month of PT Barnum’s birth. Barnum once tested the strength of the Brooklyn Bridge by marching 21 elephants and 17 camels across from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The stunt disproved rumors about the bridge’s instability and highlighted the benefits of sound engineering. Students and teachers don’t have access to dozens of circus animals, but thanks to Pitsco’s bridge- and tower-building projects – and accompanying structure testers – they don’t need it. Engineering lessons are easy to come by with items such as the Balsa Bridges, Earthquake Towers, and Toothpick Bridges Maker Projects; the Cantilevered Bridge Class Pack; and the TowerPak, and testing devices such as the Structures Testing Instrument, the Tower Crusher, the Balsa Truss Tester, and the Cantilevered Bridge Adapter. Building and testing model bridges and towers is a great way to engage students in STEM principles – without the need for circus animals.
