elcome to worship at First Baptist. We are so glad that you have joined us today. From the heart of downtown Knoxville, we are touching lives around the world, sharing the ministry and life of Jesus Christ. If you need further information about our church, or desire a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, our ministers will be available following the service at each exit. Please prepare for worship by:  Silencing cell phones, pagers and PDAs.  Encouraging children five years old and older to worship using the printed supplements available from ushers.  Taking advantage of our Preschool Extended Session designed specifically for children age 3 and under. Pagers are provided to communicate with parents in case of emergency. Children age 4 years 1st grade may attend Passage, our children’s worship experience, after the children’s sermon, or remain with their parents in the service.  Noting that restrooms are located directly behind the choir loft. Becoming a Member You are welcome and encouraged to come to the front of the church to meet with a minister during the Hymn of Response to request baptism or to join the church. If you are not ready to do this, please complete the information in the tear-off portion of this worship folder and place it in the offering plate and a minister will contact you this week. Or, you may simply call the church office to request an appointment with any minister. Continue the Experience Check your local television provider’s guide for information about the rebroadcast of today’s worship service. The worship service is available on DVD and can be obtained by calling the church office. The message for today’s worship service will also be available later this week online at www.fbcknox.org.

Life of the Church continued… Christmas Brunch Saturday, December 13 Our annual Christmas Brunch is another opportunity for us to invite individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness and poverty into the church to eat a good breakfast, hear local choirs sing Christmas music, pose for a family portrait, and receive gifts donated by the church and local community. We need your help to bring in donations of blankets, children’s sleeping bags, new 8x10 picture frames, and hygiene bags. This year in the boxes located at the elevators, you will find Ziploc bags with lists in them. Please pick up as many bags as you can fill and bring back, packed with hygiene items. Items may be placed in the boxes in the Welcome Center and by the elevators. If you choose to give a monetary donation, please note in the memo line: “Christmas Brunch.” Thank You!

Look! He has placed the land in front of you. Go and occupy it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Don’t be afraid! Don’t be discouraged!

28

Where can we go? Our brothers have demoralized us with their report. They tell us, “The people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns are large, with walls rising high into the sky! We even saw giants there—the descendants of Anak!

29

“But I said to you, ‘Don’t be shocked or afraid of them! 30 The Lord your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt. 31 And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child. Now he has brought you to this place.”

32

“But even after all he did, you refused to trust the Lord your God, 33 who goes before you looking for the best places to camp, guiding you with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day.”

Hymn 280 Speak, O Lord by Getty and Townend

Morning Scripture (Mark 16:1-8)

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” 8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Because He Lives RESURRECTION

Prayer of Dedication for Offering

Jonathan Coffield Sanctuary Choir The Lord Is My Light by Craig Courtney

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Of whom shall I be afraid? Though evildoers assail me, when adversaries attack me, they stumble and fall.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? Of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army besiege me, though war break out against me, my heart will not fear. One thing I ask, one thing I seek of the Lord: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in his temple.

Since this is the first Sunday of the month we will also receive our Community Care/Benevolence Offering that allows us to meet the critical needs of those in our community.

For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His dwelling; And He will set me high upon a rock. Then shall my head be exalted above my enemies round about me; I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

Brian Daniel Reception Today, following the 11:00 am Service Tom shared that Brian Daniel has submitted his resignation to take a new position with a funeral home in Washington, D.C. While we rejoice in the news of this great opportunity, we are saddened by his departure. Please join us as we celebrate his time at First Baptist at a reception in his honor on his last day with us, Today, following the 11:00 AM service in the Blue Room. Thank you for your season of service among us, Brian. Well done!

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear, of whom shall I be afraid? The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is my light!

Safety and Security As we continue to improve the safety and security of our facilities, we are reminded that we need to provide a safe and secure environment for the children who meet on the first and second floors in the Ward Education Building. Beginning Today, we will return to a previous practice of locking the stairwell doors to the first and second floors of the Ward Education Building, and they will remain locked at all times. You can access those areas through the entrances adjacent to the elevators on each floor. Thank you for helping keep our children safe.

Surviving the Holidays Sunday, November 2, at 3:30 pm The holidays can be a time of great joy, but they can also prove to be difficult for those dealing with the loss of a loved one or struggling with grief whether recent or sometime in the past. We have a resource for those dealing with grief as we head into Thanksgiving and prepare for Christmas. If you, a family member, or a friend is dealing with grief and want to learn more about strategies for finding joy during this time of year, join us in our Surviving the Holidays seminar this coming Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm in the Blue Room. The seminar/class should run about two hours and will give you/them valuable tools for the season including a 30-day devotional to take home and use during the holiday season. Reservations are required so we can have resources on hand. Please contact Pam Neal at [email protected] to secure a spot. Bridges Out of Poverty Weekend Workshop November 6, 7, & 8: Thurs & Fri, 6:00-8:00 pm, and Sat, 9:00 am-3:00 pm, in the Hill St. Training Room When you work with someone in need, do you wonder why he or she makes certain choices? Do you wish they would experience faster success? Do you give them “the look” when they just don’t seem to get it? If so, this training is for you. The workshop, usually $30 plus the cost of the book, is now just $5 in 2014, due to a generous grant. Registration required: contact Joy Claybrook [email protected] or Gina Whitmore at Compassion Coalition 865-251-1591 ext. 2 or [email protected].
