Call Committee and Call Process The August 21, 2016 Sunday bulletin included a chart explaining the LOCLC Call Committee Process. It indicated that the boxes, which were colored yellow meant we were in the process. However, all this has now changed (see below chart). The Call Committee recommended a candidate to the Board and the Board extended a call. Shortly thereafter, the candidate asked to be removed for consideration for the senior pastor vacancy. Please refer to the letter from our Board President, Ted Trembath, for more specifics (see below). The Call Committee is now waiting for a second slate of candidates from Bishop Talmage of the Grand Canyon Synod. We are unable to give further consideration to those candidates who were on the original slate. We ask that you pray for our discernment and wisdom as we continue to search for a pastor to lead our congregation. To all LOC Members and Friends, The Love of Christ Board of Directors has just been officially informed of the desire of our selected candidate for the Senior Pastor position to remove his name from consideration. Unfortunately we cancelled the previously scheduled All Congregational meeting on 9/18. As many of you know this is a process that is full of discernment from all parties involved and the Holy Spirit was calling this candidate to fulfill his calling at his current congregation. We remain in awe of Christ's hand in our congregation and respect the process in which we are led by the ELCA and the Grand Canyon Synod. The Call Committee will remain active and will await additional candidates from the Bishop’s office. The Board or Call Committee will update the congregation when there is any new developments in the process. LOC is a vibrant gathering of believers who are committed to a common purpose of sharing Christ's message in word and action to our community within our walls and in our neighborhood. We will continue to be a strong group with the leadership of the staff, board and Interim Pastors through prayer and Biblical principles. Thanks to all who continue to step up and define who we are as we represent the hands and feet of Christ. Sincerely, Ted Trembath - LOC Board President

30th Anniversary of Love of Christ Lutheran Church! THE NEXT 30 YEARS…HERE WE GO, AGAIN! – Love of Christ Lutheran Church has a marvelous heritage that started in 1986 with an energetic mission/developer gathering both “Saints and Sinners” together to start a new congregation dedicated to worship and ministry in Jesus’ name in East Mesa. This November - and again in January when our winter visitors have returned - we plan on celebrating our heritage and examining how we can assure making the NEXT 30 years even more memorable. A team has been formed to put this into action, and we have already planned some events, but we’d really welcome any suggestions as to your thoughts and ideas. We will be blessed with a sermon on November 6 at 9:30am by our founder and original senior Pastor Don Thompson, whose theme will be “Thy Will Be Done – the next 30 years!” In January we have invited the Bishop of our Grand Canyon Synod, Reverend Steve Talmage to share in our joyful 30th anniversary of worshiping and being God’s hands and voice here in the Valley. Please pray for our team and call either Dianne Oien 480 981 6199 X15 or me with your suggestions. Clark Wirthlin

LUTHER YEAR 2017 Lutherans and Catholics around the globe will celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the nailing of the 95 Theses on the castle church door at Wittenberg by Martin Luther on October 31, 1517 one year early on Oct. 31, 2016 at Lund, Sweden. A common prayer service led by Pope Francis, Lutheran World Federation President Bishop Dr. Munib A. Younan and LWF General Secretary Dr. Martin Junge will focus on reconciliation between one billion Catholics and the more than 70 million Lutherans around the world. As a youngster growing up in a small Lutheran congregation in New Lebanon, Ohio, I expected to see our pastor pound his fists on the pulpit on Reformation Sunday and condemn the Antichrist and his minions to eternal damnation. But, fortunately, the tide has turned. Lutherans and Catholics for more than 60 years have been in dialogue with one an-

other and have co-signed many statements of unity on subjects such as the Apostles’ Creed, Baptism, the authority of Scripture, the role of Mary in the church, and faith as a gift from God in the famous “Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification by Faith” signed in Augsburg in 1999. Our ELCA Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton has welcomed the meeting in Lund and has said, “At a time when violence and fragmentation seem to be the way, this joint commemoration offers something different. Dialogue is possible and produces good fruits: Conflict can be left behind, and common hope we all have in Christ is celebrated.” May the Year of Luther ahead be a time of growing together in unity for all Protestants and Roman Catholics.

Grand Canyon Synod At the recent Synod Assembly, Eugene Peterson’s interpretation of 2 Peter 1:15 was used as the theme for the meeting: “So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others.” The website for our Grand Canyon Synod has many links to interesting reading about the worldwide missions of the ELCA. The Lutheran Magazine can also be viewed online from the website. To access those links: www.gcsynod.org. 4

Parish Nurse—Katie Thorson - October is Fire Safety Month right away. A poor connection between the plug and the outlet can cause overheating and can start a fire in minutes.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that fires kill more than 4,000 Americans each year and injure approximately 20,000 more. U.S. fire departments respond to nearly 2 million fires each year, with threequarters of them occurring in residences. A home is often referred to as a safe haven. This month, make sure your home is protected from (and your family is prepared for) a fire. Here are 10 simple tips to help you avoid fires and reduce the risk of injury should one occur: 1) Smoke Alarms – These are still a very important addition to your home. Smoke alarms are widely available and inexpensive. Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and test it monthly. 2) Prevent Electrical Fires – Don’t overload circuits or extension cords. Cords and wires should never be placed under rugs or in high traffic areas. Avoid loose electrical connections by checking the fit of the plug in the wall outlet. If the plug loosely fits, inspect the outlet

3) Keep Plugs Safe – Unplug all appliances when not in use. Follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions and use your senses to spot any potential disasters. If a plug is overheating, smells strange, shorts out or sparks – the appliance should be shut off immediately, then replaced or repaired. 4) Alternate Heaters – Make sure there is ample space around any portable heating unit. Anything that could catch fire should be at least three feet away. Inspect your chimney annually and use fire screens to help keep any fires in the fireplace. 5) Fire Safety Sprinklers – When combined with working smoke alarms, home fire sprinklers greatly increase your chance of surviving a fire. Sprinklers are affordable and they can increase property value and lower insurance rates. 6) Create An Escape Route – Create and practice your escape plan with your family from every room in the house. Practice staying low to the floor and checking for hot doors using the back of your hand. It’s just like a routine school fire drill – but in your home. 7) Position Appliances Carefully – Try to keep TV sets, kitchen and other appliances away from

13

windows with curtains. If there is a wiring problem, curtains can spread a fire quickly. Additionally, keeping your appliances away from water sources (like rain coming in from windows) can help prevent wiring damage which can lead to a fire. 8) Clean Dryer Vents – Clothes dryers often start fires in residential areas. Clean the lint filter every time you start a load of clothes to dry or after the drying cycle is complete. Make sure your exhaust duct is made of metal tubing and not plastic or foil. Clean the exhaust duct with a good quality dryer vent brush to prevent blockage & check for lint build up behind the dryer at least twice a year. 9) Be Careful Around the Holidays – If you fill your home with lights during the holiday season, keep them away from anything that can easily catch fire. Check all of your lights prior to stringing them up and dispose of anything with frayed or exposed wires. 10) Conduct Regular Inspections – Check all of your electronic equipment and wiring at least once a month. Taking a little time to do this each month can really pay off. Following these simple tips could potentially save your life or the life of a loved one. Pass this list on to your friends and family and make this fire prevention month count!

Online Giving Did you know that you can go onto our website (loveofchristchurch.net) or scan the QR Code to the right and make a contribution?  Download any free QR code app.  Scan QR Code printed here.  Register (one time only)  Indicate the amount you would like to contribute. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Jesus, Matthew 6:21 Jesus taught that how we handle our money is an indicator of our hearts, and Paul taught that we should give cheerfully and sacrificially in response to the love of God. Giving is a central theme of the Bible, and at Love of Christ we invite our regular attendees and members to give in our weekend services or by mailing in their contributions. We are now pleased to offer the option of giving online. In our digital age with online shopping, online bill pay, Ebay, and Amazon, Love of Christ has chosen to make online tithing and giving available to those who are interested. You can give online by 14

either check or credit/debit card. We believe that living “debt free” is a worthy goal for all Christians. Online giving does involve the use of credit and debit transactions and makes no distinction between the two. We offer this option only as a convenience and we strongly urge you to use your credit card only as a payment method, never to incur debt. However, if you intend to pay off your balance each month, we believe that is an issue of conscience and leave that between you, God, and your frequent flier miles. With online giving, you can give your tithe to Love of Christ and also support our missionaries and mission trips. Online giving will be counted toward your regular yearly giving and will appear in your year-end giving statement for tax purposes, along with all other contributions. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7 For more information visit us online at loveofchristchurch.net or contact Dick Beckman at 480-981-6199 x21.

A NEW WAY TO LOOK AT FALL Labor Day has come and gone and we are now officially into Fall, though many of us from the Midwest don’t think this is anything like “real Fall”- a time of cool nights, beautiful colors on the trees, closing of the cabin for another season, and the list goes on. For some of you it will be a time of coming back, a time when you plan your return trip to your winter home in Arizona. It is also a time when us “full timers” look forward to your return. You will be coming back to the excitement about finding new pastoral leadership. You will also notice the excitement and enthusiasm of your New Leaf Legacy Team, who have been working this summer on new and exciting ways to inform and engage you to be part of the Love Of Christ New Leaf Legacy. There are many ways to become involved and you will hear more about that. But I want to share with you a story that happened to me this summer and shows a very simple way to become part of the New Leaf Legacy. A couple who worship at my church and are very good friends with my

wife and me asked for my assistance as they were making some changes to their trust. We met before they returned to Wisconsin and discussed what they wanted to do. I made some suggestions for them to discuss with their attorney when they were back in Wisconsin. I have had two phone calls from them this summer, both about other matters, but they did mention they were working on getting the trust amended. Last week they called again. This time they asked me about endowments. They had been talking with a neighbor and friend and when the topic of making a gift to their church came up, he suggested they consider their gift go to the endowment fund, because if you leave an undesignated gift to the church it can be used for anything. We talked about that and my friends decided they wanted their gifts to their churches to go to the churches’ endowment funds. They are leaving their legacy for mission work in the Church through the churches’ endowments. They really feel good about that decision and it is very simple to accomplish. Now may be a good time to ask some questions and make some decisions about your legacy to Love Of Christ . Call me, it’s free, Lance Jacobson 480-466-6053.

Habitat for Humanity We will be taking a break from actual construction until it cools off, but we shouldn’t forget what our ministry of “building hope” right here in Arizona is all about. Here are some memoryjogging facts about Habitat for Humanity and our partnership coalition with eight other Lutheran congregations known as “Lutherans Building for Christ”. Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit, faith-based organization with the goal of eliminating sub-standard housing throughout the world. With partners like us, H4H facilitates the construction of simple, decent, affordable homes to families in need. The families with which we partner are selected without regard to race, ethnicity, or religion. The families must be; US citizens or on permanent residency status, demonstrate a need for adequate housing, have a two-year history of stable income between 30 and 65 percent of the median income, have a good history of credit and paying debts, complete 100 hours of “sweat equity” on a fellow Habitat homeowner’s new house, and complete 300 hours on their own home before taking occupancy, and they must attend classes on home maintenance, financing and home ownership. Love of Christ Lutheran has helped

build thirteen homes in the Mesa/ Phoenix/Apache Junction/Guadelupe areas! A virtual history of our ministry is depicted in photographs hanging on the entry wall of our Center of Compassion. The homes are NOT given to the homeowners. The Bible tells us that “if you loan money to the poor, do not charge interest”. At the time of the home completion and dedication, the homeowners make their first payment on a profit-free mortgage, and the average payment is about 25% of their income, which includes the principal, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, and a maintenance account. These funds are then used by Habitat to build even more homes. The results are incredible – families living in sub-standard housing and caught up in a cycle of poverty, become homeowners, tax-payers, and contributors to the well-being of their neighborhoods! The Bible tells us to “set aside ten percent of our gifts from God to serve Him,” and Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona follows this instruction by giving ten percent of our donations to Habitat International to build homes in other countries. For additional information on the Christian principles that guide Habitat for Humanity, visit www.habitatcaz.org.

BIG NEWS!!!

The Arizona Tax Credit Laws have just been changed for 2016. You can now give up to $400 for an individual, and up to $800 for a couple filing jointly! The funding for this outreach ministry does not come from our Church’s budget, but from over-and-above donations from you. We need your prayers and extra-mile blessings before the end of the year! The really GREAT news is that the State of Arizona will provide you with a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $800 on a joint return or $400 for an individual. Therefore, your contributions cost you nothing, because it is credited against the State taxes would otherwise pay, and it may ALSO be used as an itemized deduction on your Federal Tax return! SO, like most blessings, you actually get back more than you give! There are special designated giving envelopes on the Habitat kiosks in the Center of Compassion, and outside the sanctuary. Please make your checks out to Love of Christ Lutheran, and write “Habitat-AZ” in the information space. If you need a donation confirmation letter, please advise the office. If you need further information or have any questions, please visit our Habitat kiosks, email me at [email protected], or call me at 480-985-8757.

African Orphan Mission Project The new house for the Khulu family in Shongweni, South Africa is now under construction. This beneficiary is a family of 6 that lost their mother in 2012 and are in need of a decent home. The oldest, Thabisile, is 27 years old and caring for her siblings. It will be a blessed day in September when they will be able to settle in their new home built by a local contractor and financed by the congregation here at Love of Christ. They will be grateful to be moving out of the ONE ROOM that they have been occupying. Our goal was to have the home paid for before construction began but we

are a little short of the total cost at this time. We are proceeding because we know that the Lord answers prayers. We still have about a month to have this gift to the Khulu children completely paid for and still are accepting donations. A thank you plaque from Love of Christ will be placed in the home along with a copy of a Zulu bible and food products to help them on their new journey. Our request for used soccer shoes has been slow but we will be sending shoes to our soccer teams in Shongweni within the month. Boys do outgrow their shoes and our

teams also wear them out, so look around and ask if you know anyone that would have a used pair or two. Leave them in the church office and I will pick them up. Thank you for your continued support of the African Orphans Project. Ken Ondrejko [email protected]
