Senate Candidates On Display Spots Going Fast For October 27th Breakfast Election Day will be a mere 12 days away when the Chamber holds its Oct. 27 breakfast featuring eight candidates for the state Senate. “Ulster County is unique in that we have four state Senate districts,” said Chamber President Ward Todd. “All eight candidates for those four offices have been invited to our breakfast and the issues they will talk about are extremely important to local businesses.” The breakfast, sponsored by Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, is scheduled for 7:30-9 a.m. at the Best Western Plus in Kingston. Todd said the format would be the same as past years with opening statements, written questions from the business community and then closing remarks. The following candidates were invited to the breakfast: 46th Senate District First-term incumbent Sen. George Amedore, R-Rotterdam, faces a challenge from Democrat Sara Niccoli in this race.

Amedore was elected to the Assembly in 2007 and is vice president of Amedore Homes, a second-generation family business. Niccoli is supervisor in the Montgomery County town of Palatine and a family farmer. She is the former executive director of the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State. The 46th Senate District includes the city of Kingston and towns of Esopus, Hurley, Kingston, Lloyd, Marbletown, Saugerties, Ulster and Woodstock in Ulster County. 39th Senate District This race pits longtime incumbent Sen. William Larkin, R-Cornwall, against Democrat Chris Eachus, a New Windsor resident and Orange County legislator. Larkin was first elected to the Senate in 1990 and is seeking a 14th two-year term. He served in the Assembly from 1979-1990 after 23 years of active military service. Eachus is a former physics, astronomy and Earth science teacher at Marlboro High School

and Newburgh Free Academy who lost to Larkin in 2012. He has been a county legislator since 2006. The 39th Senate District, which encompasses mostly Orange and Rockland counties, includes the towns of Plattekill and Marlborough in Ulster County. 42nd Senate District Incumbent Sen. John Bonacic, R-Mount Hope, is facing off against Democratic environmental activist Pramilla Malick of Minisink in this race. Bonacic, a former majority leader and chairman of the Orange County Legislature, was first elected to the state Senate in 1998. He was a member of the state Assembly from 1990-1998. Malick won an opportunity to ballot election in September. A mother of four, her campaign website said she got involved in politics to

‘Y’ Marks 150 Years in Kingston Come Celebrate at October 25 Mixer The YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County is a treasure hidden in plain sight. Thousands drive by 507 Broadway each day and may not be aware of everything this organization offers the community. Or, you also might not realize this little factoid, but the Y has been around a while. “This year marks our 150th anniversary in Kingston and so we thought it was a good time to celebrate with a Chamber Mixer,” said Heidi Kirschner, the Y’s president and CEO. “We want people to get a little bit of an idea of where we came from and what it was like back then when we first started.” You can see that and everything the Y has to offer at the Mixer, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Oct. 25. Kirschner offered special thanks to members of the YMCA Board of Directors and other local leaders for sponsoring the October Chamber Mixer, including Normann Staffing, Herzog’s, Alcoa, Tom Lindgren CPA, Heidecker Landscaping, Brian Woltman, Marie Anderson and the Committee to Re-Elect Phil Kirschner. “We want Chamber members to go through our building and get an idea of what it’s like,” Kirschner said. “A lot of people just drive by every single day and they don’t even realize what’s inside and we’ve been in the community for 150 years.” The YMCA describes itself as a private, not-for-profit, community based organization “that provides social, health, physical education and recreation services to the residents of Ulster County.” Kirschner said Chamber members should get a sense of that the evening of the Mixer. “Most activities will be going on,” she said. The Mixer will be centered in the Y’s Learning/ Childcare Area, but visitors will be able tour the building. Chamber members will also be able to see the younger YMCA Hurricane Swim Team practice in the pool, sneak a peek at a Sit n’Get Fit Class or observe pilates. “Spin classes should be going on that night and you can see what that’s like and how much fun the people in the class have,” Kirschner said. “You’ll be able to get a feel for the environment and the culture here.” “We are a community organization so I think it’s important that people realize what it is we do here. Most people just think we’re a gym and that’s only a piece of what we do.” The Y features a gym, pool and a host of health and wellness activities. We are fortunate to have so many instructors who are engaged and help people improve and change their lives. Kirschner said “Amy’s Fireflies,” a morning spin class, takes their bike riding passion to the street and into the community…” “They do different rides throughout the county during the year to raise money for different causes,” she said. “Once people get in to the Y, they get engaged.” The Y also provides childcare throughout the county. And, how could we be a Y if we didn’t educate youth on water safety and provide swim lessons? Kirschner said the Y operates three summer camps in Olive, New Paltz and Kingston. Last year, the Y raised

enough for 268 camp sessions. “That’s worth over $60,000,” she said. “We are only able to accomplish this with support from our community and we truly appreciate all that the community does for us!” The Y offers adult basketball leagues for men and women, adult co-ed volleyball and youth volleyball, running programs and a variety of sports clinics. Support from the business community is critical. “Many of these programs require funding because many participants have limited ability to pay,” Kirschner said. “To be entirely inclusive, we need to keep the cost as low as possible, if not free.” Kirschner said one of the basketball leagues this year featured single mothers. The Y provided childcare while the women played hoops and one player lost 15 pounds. “This is like their night out,” she said. “Those are the stories we like to hear because we know people are benefitting from the programs that we offer.” Kirschner said the Mixer would also be an opportunity to see the farm and community gardens on the Y’s grounds, as well as the Youth Build training lab if daylight permits. “We’ve got a lot to show and share with the public,” she said. Kirschner said she is looking forward to opening the doors of the Y to the county’s business leaders. “I personally like going to the Mixers and catching up with people I haven’t seen in a while,” she said. “I like to hear how they’re doing. It’s nice to see other businesses and see what they’re doing and what they specialize in and what they’re offering. “It’s great to go into a business and see what’s happening. And so, my hope is that when people come to the Y, they’ll get to see what goes on inside the Y that helps improve the lives of people throughout our community.” The YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County can be reached at (845) 338-3810 and www.ymcaulster.org. Honoring the ‘Best of Ulster County’ Business Awards Dinner to be held on October 20 The Chamber and the Ulster County Economic Alliance have announced the recipients of their 12th-annual Business Recognition Awards. The awards recognize Ulster County entrepreneurs and businesses that are leaders in their sectors, have achieved outstanding results, or shown dedication and commitment to furthering business and the quality of life in Ulster County and the Hudson Valley Region. The 2016 award recipients are: Business Person of the Year: Kevin Pitcock of Peak Trading Corp. Pitcock started the wholesale rigging company 19 years ago in an 800-squarefoot Quonset hut at his grandfather’s shipyard in Kingston. From that dirt floor beginning, Pitcock has purchased several other businesses and now has more than 10,000 customers around the world. Pitcock, who purchased the company Northern Sling and Supply a few years after his start, also owns several e-commerce sites and recently bought Sheldon Hill Forestry Supplies and moved the companies to the 200-squarefoot former Vertis Printing Co. building in Saugerties. Business of the Year: Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. Central Hudson provides service to 88,200 companies and businesses in Ulster County and employs 218 people here. Formed in 1911 and and incorporated in 1926, Central Hudson’s supporters for this award noted the company’s grants and incentives to promote the economy, including grants to SUNY New Paltz, Wolf-Tec, Zumtobel, the Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC), Rural Ulster Preservation Corp. (RUPCO), and more. Small Business of the Year: J & A Roofing. A family owned and operated business since 1938, you’ve no doubt passed many buildings roofed by J & A throughout Ulster County. Company patriarch Joe Horowitz, now 93, still comes into the shop every day to keep an eye on things. Ian Horowitz now runs the company, which also offers windows and siding for all types of structures. Customers have lauded the company for “quality work, done quickly at a reasonable price.” Tourism Business of the Year: Kelder’s Farm.

Kevin Pitcock They come to the Rondout Valley from far and wide to see one of the world’s largest garden gnomes at this 200-yearold family farm, which started as a dairy farm, a few rows of strawberries and a homemade sign. Today, the farm features an array of attractions such as 100 acres of pick-yourown foods, a jumping pillow, corn and meadow mazes, mini golf, playground and picnic area and farm market. Commitment to the Community: The Bruderhof. The Woodcrest Community in Rifton is the oldest Bruderhof community in the country and you see their members everywhere when it comes to helping the community. The Bruderhof works with local governments and nonprofit organizations, and their presence is evident throughout the region. You might find them repairing a bridge, building a playground, or replacing a roof. The Bruderhof’s generosity to youth is legendary. The community distributes scholarships and invites children from the local Boys and Girls Club to enjoy gardening and outdoor games at the Rifton property each year. A few years ago, the Bruderhof paid to replace the turf at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium. That was just one more example of their extreme generosity and “Commitment to the Community.” Len Cane Heart of Ulster County: Ed Ford. This award is named for Len Cane, the Chamber’s longtime president, who died last year. His wife Lee and son Craig accepted the award for Len last year when it was given in his name. Ford, 98, has been the historian for the city of Kingston since 1984 and has done much to preserve its historic legacy. His most recent effort was to preserve a series of lunettes adorning the chamber walls at Continued on page 6

Huge Crowd for Buy Local Expo Event at Diamond Mills Turns 20 John Naccarato, as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2016 Buy Local Expo, had a birds’ eye view of the Expo entranceway at the Diamond Mills Hotel & Conference Center “The thing I noticed was that there was a steady stream of people coming through that front door all day long, and it’s all ages,” said Naccarato, the owner of Naccarato Insurance in Saugerties. Chamber President Ward Todd said the Expo, which marked its 20th Anniversary this year, was sold out weeks ago and featured nearly 100 exhibitors. He concurred with Naccarato about the crowd. “There’s been a great deal of ‘buzz’ around the county about this particular event,” Todd said. “That’s translated into record attendance this year.” The Expo opened at noon with a Chamber Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Todd drew applause when he mentioned the 20-year anniversary of Ulster County’s largest networking event. “I’m sure you’re aware, but we’re not here without you,” Todd said. “I mean, you are it. You are the most engaged and involved Chamber membership I’ve seen anywhere so thank you all – this applause is really for you.”

Larry Begnal, Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, joined many others in calling Diamond Mills “the perfect location.” “It’s just a gorgeous facility,” Begnal said. “Just look outside at that waterfall. It’s marvelous.” Begnal also reminded everyone of the Chamber’s mission to Buy Local. “That’s what we all need to do,” he said. “We need to keep everything as local as we can. I’m building a new dealership and I’m trying to keep everybody in town involved in that project.” Ulster County Executive Mike Hein said the economy continues to improve “inch by inch” locally. “That doesn’t mean we don’t have challenges,” Hein said. “It doesn’t mean we don’t have to continue to work hard, but what it does mean is things are continuing to go in the right direction and, for that, we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to all the business owners and all the individuals who are in this room. “The businesses of Ulster County, in many ways, are the heartbeat of what we are moving forward.” The ceremony also featured Saugerties Supervisor Greg Helsmoortel and Diamond Mills owner Tom Struzzieri, who said it was “truly special to call Ulster

County home.” “There’s no better place to do business than Ulster County and I think this event demonstrates that,” he said. Amid a social media world, business leaders and the public spent the next five hours in face-to-face networking on the exhibit floor. They shared business cards, small gifts bearing their logos, candy, conversation and lots about their companies. Jeremy Ellenbogen, owner of Ellenbogen Creative Continued on page 9

That’s my philosophy.” Joe Deegan of SVN Deegan-Collins Commercial Realty echoed that sentiment. “People come to this I don’t normally see,” Deegan said. “Not necessarily

exhibitors, but people that come through the show. I get some face time with them and they get to understand what I do.” Lynn Nichols, director of marketing for HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley, was on hand to provide health and wellness magazines, medical information cards and information about the health organization’s $133-million expansion plans. “HealthAlliance loves to be at the Buy Local Expo because we’re able to shake hands with all the community members that are here,” Nichols said. “They may use our hospital and, if they don’t, they’re able to find out about the hospital and some of the programs that we offer. “It’s very important for us to be here with the community.” Ulster County Comptroller Elliot Auerbach’s booth allowed people to see if they were one of the 55,000 county residents owed some $21 million in unclaimed funds being held by the state. Auerbach said nearly 60 Ulster County

residents will be receiving checks from the NYS Office of Unclaimed Funds, as a result of the Expo. “To see that happen, and know that we can put money in people’s pockets that actually belong to them in the first place, is exciting,” Auerbach said. The Chamber also gave away awards to the Expo’s top exhibitors: BEST IN SHOW • FIRST PLACE SVN Deegan-Collins Commercial Realty BEST IN SHOW • SECOND PLACE Paychex BEST IN SHOW • THIRD PLACE Gardiner Animal Hospital
