Building a Sanctuary of Transformation
October 24, 2012 Dear Brothers and Sisters at Resurrection, The Vestry consists of lay leaders chosen by the congregation and the current Vestry to provide resource leadership for the parish. There are 12 vestry members: three whose terms expire this year, three whose terms expire next year, three whose terms expire in two years, a Sr. Warden, a Jr. Warden, and the Rector. The Vestry provides leadership in these areas:
• Prayer and fasting,
• Finances,
• Facilities, and
• Rector support and encouragement.
Vestry members are not elders (priests are the elders in Anglican polity), but the Biblical qualifications for elders can also apply to the Vestry: temperate and self-controlled (1 Timothy 3), full of the Spirit (Acts 6), and having wisdom from above (James 3). You as a member of Resurrection play an important part in discerning the membership of the Vestry. The following are the steps by which Vestry members are chosen: 1. Parish members (including Vestry members) nominate vestry candidates. 2. The Vestry reviews the nominations, selects a set of nominees, and confirms with them their willingness and ability to serve. 3. Each nominee provides a biography, which is distributed to the Church. 4. At a Parish Meeting, each nominee shares a testimony, and parishioners pray for each nominee. 5. Parishioners give feedback regarding the nominees (both affirmations and concerns) at any time during this process. 6. The Vestry forms the final nominee list, and the new Vestry members are elected and received at the Annual Business Meeting.
