A Reminder to Seniors Keegan Elder

ATTENTION ALL SENIORS! The end of the year is nearing and the weeks are beginning to go by very quickly. Remember to make the best of this time, open your eyes to the great opportunities you have, stay focused on what matters, but most of all remember to have fun and enjoy it. Yes, it can get very stressful, but life goes on and works out. Haruki Murakami once said, “And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.” High school is said to be one of the best moments in life, and although you are all going to do amazing things, cherish your time at Palestine High School.

Changes in The Community James is an author from Robinson, IL. One of his most popular stories is “The Valentine”, a story about love. In the story, as Valentine's Day rolls around James wants to buy the girl he likes a big box of chocolates. Everyone sees James buy these chocolates, but James just says that they are for his mom. When Valentine's Day rolls around James leaves the chocolates on her desk and stays at the back of the class, but when the girl walks in with a bunch of high school boys she just laughs at the box and everyone knows it is James's box. James is so embarrassed he sits in the back of the class, but when the bell rings he has to leave and everyone laughs at him. The James Jones Literary Society was founded in 1991 at Lincoln Trail College, Robinson, Illinois. As of 2008, it had nearly 300 members from 34 states and 5 countries. The Society sponsors a national symposium every year, when the First Novel Fellowship is awarded; these are held in different locations, but return every third year to Robinson. This year students from Palestine participating in the Society's annual contest for high school students, writing a response to “The Valentine.” The winners were, in first place, Jamie Lanham ($75); in second place, Morgan Kelly ($50); in third place, Shaelyn Wilber ($25); and Honorable Mentions were Jenna Correll and Tarryn Monti. The awards were presented by Diane Reed, secretary of the JJLS Board of Directors. Congratulations, winners!

The Palestine Community Food Bank is finally expanding. The old church that the food bank is currently in can no longer hold the food and the many clients that come to get food. The Palestine Community Food Bank worked hard to raise money for a new building. They held an auction and dinner to help raise money. There were many generous donations given that Sue Richardson, the director, is very thankful for. The generosity of the people of Palestine does not go unnoticed. The new food bank is built and is almost ready to be moved into. The food bank is always in need of volunteers. They love to have young students come and volunteer their time. Keegan Elder, senior at PHS, said, “I have been so blessed to be volunteering at the food bank for nearly five years. I have grown so close to the other volunteers and clients that walk through the door. It is truly eye opening and everyone should experience it.” If you have any questions about volunteering, contact Keegan Elder.

Senior Spotlight Nathan White

Jamie Lanham is the daughter of Nicole and JD Lanham and was born on April 7, 1999. She has four sisters, Rachel, Kelsey, Marissa, and Katie. She also has three puppies, Cienna, Clover and K, her fish George III, and cat Lucifer. Jamie is now a senior and has only one quarter left until graduation. When she graduates she plans on going to Depaul University in Chicago for Marketing, where she has already been accepted. Jamie is greatly interested in helping businesses promote their business through commercials and other types of advertisements. Jamie also chose this business because people always need help promoting their business, and she could work for multiple businesses at the same time. She also volunteers and participates in many school clubs and the community such as Drama Club, Scholastic Bowl, Pay It Forward, 4H, and Color Guard. After school hours, Jamie babysits, hangs out with her pets, watches television and eats. Jamie says she wishes everyone at PHS, including herself, a successful career and for their years to be as great as they can be. Her best memory at PHS is the drama club after parties. Jamie says “Yes, I have enjoyed my years at PHS because everyone is friendly and that makes a warm environment.”

March Madness In Math Keegan Elder

The NCAA March Madness Tournament is underway across the United States. This tournament features teams from many conferences, ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, SEC, and Pack-12. The students in Mr. Will’s math classes were required to fill out a bracket to see who they thought the winner of the tournament would be. The likelihood of a student at Palestine High School to fill out a winning bracket is very low. There are more than 9.2 quintillion ways this 64 team bracket can turn out. If you are 18 you can fill out 25 different brackets on the NCAA website to make your chances of having that perfect bracket rise. Although some people aren’t basketball fans, it helps show the probability of you choosing the correct winner. Good luck to PHS students on their brackets!
