Organizations should be encouraged to use professionally trained interpreters (a professionally trained interpreter is defined as one with at least 40 hours of interpreting training.)

~Explain the format of the session and the interpreter’s role.

~Review your expectation for mode of interpretation (encourage consecutive interpretation mode)

a. Consecutive: Interprets after each sentence. b. Summary: Interprets after a brief period to summarize what has been said. c. Simultaneous: Interprets while person is speaking.

~Gather information about interpreter’s experience and knowledge of session content. ~Share what your goals are for this session and your needs for interpretation. ~Review important words, concepts for translation.

~Inquire about cultural norms you should consider regarding the session content.
