Part I: Prayer Jesus’ Style

Luke 11:1-4 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

2

He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father,    hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.  3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.    And lead us not into temptation.’”

The Corruption of Prayer 1. Prayer had become ritualized. 2. Prayer had become formalized. 3. Prayer had become mechanized. 4. Prayer had become stylized.

Ignorance Intimidation Indifference

Matthew 6:5-9 5

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room,

7

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  9 This, then, is how you should pray:

Jesus Style Prayer 1.Authenticity “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on street corners to be seen by men.” ~Matthew 6:5
