PURSUIT: Week 3 – Fruit of the Spirit Open in Prayer W elcom e/Introductions/Cast Vision Rem ind the Grow Group of the ground rules Share context of the story [Provide context by sharing the information below.]

As we continue to look at I Timothy 6:3-11, another great passage to explore is Galatians 5. In this passage, Paul is explaining that life “under the law” expresses itself in the works of the flesh. Those who live by the Spirit, however, bear fruit pleasing to God. And as we learned last week, it is only by abiding in Christ that we are able to produce spiritual fruit. Tell the story – Galatians 5:13-26 [Have someone tell the story.] Rebuild the story [Group members tell the story together based on what they remember.] Read the story out loud [Read the scripture passage to see if anything was added or omitted.] Discuss these questions:

1. What do we learn about God from this passage? [God desires that I live in freedom and not become enslaved to sin; God gives us a choice between freedom and slavery; God is our only hope; the Holy Spirit guides me into truth and comforts me on my walk with the Lord; God desires that believers live in unity with each other; God’s salvation is by grace through faith and not based on my good works; God calls me to serve others in love; God created and prepared us to do good works (Ephesians 2:10); etc.]

2. What do we learn about Man/Us from this passage? [I make decisions that lead to my enslavement to sin; I can often take God’s grace for granted; I do not love others as Jesus loves them; my flesh desires that which is contrary to the Spirit; I cannot boast in the spiritual fruit that God produces in my life; I must continually deny myself in order to follow Jesus (Luke 9:23); I have to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ (II Corinthians 10:5); etc.]

3. What is God saying to you specifically through this passage as it pertains to your life, marriage, family, and work? 4. In light of what you’ve learned today, what do you need to do to obey God? Other Q uestions specific to this passage:

1. Do you have to fight against your walk with Christ becoming a list of “do’s and don’ts” instead of a personal relationship with Him? What does that battle look like? 2. What do you see as the differences in being “yoked to sin” (Galatians 5:1) and being “yoked to Jesus” (Matthew 11:28-30)? Assign Next week’s passage – Revelation 2:1-11 [Ask someone to tell the story next week.] Close in Prayer

PURSUIT: Week 3 – Leadership Coaching The purpose of this page is to help you sharpen your skills as a Grow Group leader. Each week, we will include concepts, challenges, and resources designed to assist you as you lead and shepherd your Grow Group and grow as a disciple yourself.

Leading [learn to facilitate your group more effectively] Sometimes when you mention the words “ground rules,” eyebrows get raised. Those who have never been in a Grow Group before might immediately think, “What have I gotten myself in to?” When you introduce the rules, it is important to let those in attendance know why the rules exist. This will not only answer a lot of their questions, but also reinforce and support the vision of Grow Groups. Here are four great reasons the ground rules exist: (1) Ground rules give boundaries for people to operate within. (2) They help with the flow and pace of the discussion. (3) They help us value one another and learn more about each other. (4) They help people feel more comfortable when sharing deep and meaningful things.

Shepherding [know the sheep, feed the sheep, lead the sheep, protect the sheep] In Matthew 18:10-14 and Luke 15:3-7, Jesus tells the parable of the Lost Sheep. Jesus tells those listening that if a shepherd with one hundred sheep has lost just one of them, he will leave the ninety-nine and go find the lost one. When the lost sheep is found, the shepherd rejoices. In the same way, as Grow Group leaders, it is important for us to keep in contact with everyone who is part of our group. If there are individuals in your Grow Group who have not been in attendance for a while, call to check on them. Let them know how much the group has missed them. Find out what is going on in their life that is keeping them from coming to the Grow Group. Ask how you can be praying for them. Invite them to have lunch or coffee with you. A personal contact from the Grow Group leader or apprentice will often be enough to draw someone back into the group.

Developing [grow as a disciple yourself] Your relationship with Jesus affects all of your relationships (at home, in the church, and with the world). John 15:4 says, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” It is critically important as a Grow Group leader for you to abide in an intimate relationship with Jesus.
