FITNESS CORNER Exercising While Traveling

We all travel at some point for pleasure or work. Some folks travel more frequently, which really can add complexity to remaining consistent with our workouts, especially if we are used to the familiarity and accessibility of a gym. The added time, fatigue and stress of the travel commute and business responsibility can further de-motivate us to stay on course. There are tips and strategies to help you not only keep up the physical fitness, but also keep it fresh and exciting while on the road. And you don’t have to just run around where you’re staying for fitness, you can get a full body strength session in if that’s what you want! As someone who did a bit of travel for work, I can attest these work if you put your mind to it! • Pack the sneaks and work out clothes anticipating a work out as frequently as you’d like it to happen • Make a commitment: mentally, on the calendar on your phone, to a friend – say it, write it, think it! • Be creative!!! Wake up early, work out after meetings and before the client dinner, take calls / client meetings during a walk, work out late (but not too late that you can’t sleep) • Do full body, compound exercises as much as possible to maximize efficiency and effectiveness (work hard and fast and get it done!) • Use park equipment and hotel furnishings to your advantage: • step ups on benches, pull ups on branches / jungle gym bars • tricep dips on a hotel chair or park bench • inverted curls and pull ups on a hotel table • dips between hotel or conference room chairs • decline planks against the wall or a tree or pillar

• pull ups on the door frame • Russian leg curl using the hotel couch • Use hotel towels as ropes • walk or run the stairs in your hotel, and so much more! • Know and appreciate that every minute counts – don’t NOT work out because you only have 15 mins. Work out for that 15 mins and pat yourself on the back! • Bring work out DVDs with you that require no equipment like kickboxing, bodyweight HIIT, Insanity, etc. • **I HIGHLY recommend toting around Bodyweight Strength Training and Anatomy by Bret Contreras that will give you hours of endless choices by body part and intensity using just yourself and some typical hotel room or house stuff These are just some examples for a brief article. I’m glad to discuss this further if you want to reach out!
