Rev. Jennifer Casey Associate Pastor chmaster.org

Two Sundays ago, a few volunteers at Church of the Master “took a Sunday off.” Now, you may view your attendance at church differently, but for these two the responsibilities they care for are those that, when left undone, go unnoticed. When they returned we joked about being amidst the general population on Sunday morning instead of nestled in our pews. “It this what normal people do?!” I joked about the time I went out for brunch on a Sunday off. What if there was a way that you could go to church and be outside the walls of this beautiful old building at the same time? On September 30th, there is! We will celebrate our second “Master’s Day of Mission” together in bridging our worshiping congregation with the community. The Mission Committee along with the Worship Committee and staff has organized an exciting day of worship and service that every member of our congregation can participate in. Details of the day can be found on page 7 of the Visitor. From our youngest disciples to the most seasoned, we can all serve together. A few years back, a training that many pastors attended encouraged a “secret worshipper” to go to a gas station or restaurant near the church and ask a person what that person know about the church the secret worshipper was about to attend. I think about how exciting it would be for the answer in this hypothetical situation would be that Church of the Master is the church that got outside of its walls to serve. “I was really thirsty on a bike ride, and all of a sudden someone handed me a water bottle with that church’s name on it!” “I just didn’t know how I was going to get my lawn cared for this week, but someone from Church of the Master showed up to help out!” “I was so sad that I couldn’t bring a stuffed animal with me while we stayed at the shelter, but some people at church made me a dog of my very own.” That is the voice of Jesus saying, “I’ve laid down a pattern for you. What I’ve done, you do. I’m only pointing out the obvious… If you understand what I’m telling you, act like it – and live a blessed life.” (John 13, The Message) -Pastor Anna

A NOTE FROM PASTOR JENNIFER As another school year begins, many will find themselves deep in the activities of their children. Soccer, football, dance, marching band, programming at church and so many more extra curriculars will surely keep the schedules of all ages full. In addition to this, we need to tend to our work, our homes, our families, and our community. For better or worse, busyness is a hallmark of our culture. Many of us tend to overschedule ourselves and our children in an effort to experience all that life has to offer. As wonderful as enrichment opportunities are, there is the potential to lead to burn out when we commit ourselves to too many responsibilities. If you find yourself overwhelmed this season, or any season, remember that God created the perfect rhythm of work and rest for us to be the creations we were designed to be. For many, practicing a Sabbath is perceived to be a luxury. We have many demands on our time and it can be difficult to schedule true rest into our lives. Practicing Sabbath is not a luxury, it’s a gift from God that is to be used. When we rest, we allow our bodies to rejuvenate, our minds to clear, and we connect with God in new and deeper ways. Sunday morning worship is one place where you can practice a Sabbath. By coming to worship, you have the opportunity to put responsibilities aside. You get to connect with friends, praise God through music, pray in community, and hear God’s word preached. Worship is designed to put the congregation into a space to be filled with God and prepared to be sent back out into the world. On Sunday, September 30, Church of the Master will come together for another “Master’s Day of Mission” where we will have a combined 10 a.m. worship service and then be sent out to continue worshipping through missions. The worship is designed to connect the congregation with God, one another, and the community. I hope that you’ll be able to join the rest of the Church of the Master community as we practice Sabbath together through this unique worship opportunity. Grace and Peace, Pastor Jennifer

We are called in our baptismal vows to support one another, and this training is a way to begin the process of creating a network of care. All are welcome to participate in this training. CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER INITIATIVE All Church Prayer We’re still praying together that God might reveal direction and vision for this incredible congregation. Many people have, along with Pastor Anna, set their alarms for 11:55 a.m. Pastor Anna has received a few emails, but she wants to hear from you! Has God spoken to you through this prayer initiative? What is God revealing to you as you pray daily? At which parts of the prayer do you find yourself tensing up as you pray? Which words strike your heart? How have you seen you and your family’s life change through this prayer?

MISSIONS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY- A huge THANK YOU to all the awesome folks who gave up their morning on Saturday, August 18 to help at the Westerville Habitat Partnership Walls Build at The Point. All the walls for a 3 bedroom, 2 story house were built and sent on their way to Delaware. MASTER’S DAY OF MISSION- Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 30, for our Master’s Day of Mission. We will worship together with one combined service for the whole family beginning at 10 a.m. At the conclusion of worship, we will be sent out into the community to be the hands and feet of Jesus through mission work. Plan on gathering back at the church at the end of the morning to share a meal and stories of your experience with one another. Stay tuned throughout September to sign up for one of the exciting mission options. DAWG NIGHT- Coming mid-fall, the missions team will be sponsoring another “Dawg Night” to connect with students from Otterbein’s Promise House. Come to share a meal with the students. Then, continue the conversation as you cut, stuff, and sew stuffed dogs to take the YWCA. Stay tuned for details regarding the date and time of this energizing evening! YWCA- Coming soon, Church of the Master will have the opportunity to host a family friendly activity at the YWCA. This is an opportunity for those who call the YWCA their temporary home to join together in fun and fellowship on Sunday afternoons from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. Stay tuned for a date to sign up for this new mission opportunity! NNEMAP - Are you interested in learning more about the ways NNEMAP serves the near North side of Columbus through their food pantry? You are invited to join Rob Montgomery on Tuesday mornings anytime between 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. to witness the operation and discover the good work being done through NNEMAP. FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS - Thank you for continuing to support our neighbors in need through your donations of food and toiletries. You can make an even bigger impact by donating money instead of food items. Food pantries purchase items from Mid-Ohio Food Bank at dramatically reduced prices over what we spend at the grocery store. The same $1 spent at the grocery store on a can of soup to donate could purchase an entire case of soup through Mid-Ohio Food Bank. If you’d like to give a monetary gift to one of the food pantries please indicate your intent on your giving envelope or check. Are you interested in more information about the ways Church of the Master is engaged in mission work locally and globally? Would you like to find out how you can plug into being the hands and feet of Jesus? Contact the Missions Chair, Chuck Erickson, or Pastor Jennifer Casey at [email protected] for information.

Outreach BIBLES AND BLANKETS You are invited to join the Outreach team on Sunday, September 16, at noon for a Bibles and Blankets event. Friends from the Laundry Ministry will join together with us as we share a meal, conversation, and activities. Guests will receive age-appropriate Bibles and a new blanket. Funding for this outreach event comes from the Capitol Area Ministry grant which was awarded to Church of the Master for 2018. All ages are welcome to help out and be in community with one another. See Sherri Mettle [email protected] or Pastor Jennifer at [email protected] or 614-882-2153 for more information. THE FARMER’S MARKET IS IN FULL SWING! “We literally have the community in our front yard each Saturday morning!” says Pastor Anna about the Uptown Westerville sponsored weekly Farmer’s Market held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – noon. The Farmer’s Market has generously donated a spot to Church of the Master so that we can showcase our hospitality and ministries to the community. Many have signed up for a Saturday to represent Church of the Master. There’s good news – host spots are still available on some upcoming Saturdays! You’ll find the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside of the church office. Basic information about the church will be provided and then you get to be as creative as you’d like in how you share our hospitality. Contact Sherri Mettle or Pastor Jennifer [email protected] for more information. LAUNDRY MINISTRY The Laundry Ministry continues to grow! More and more clients of W.A.R.M. are being referred to Sunlight Cleaners on the last Thursday of the month to have their laundry washed by Church of the Master servants. These evenings are filled with conversation, food, prayer, and of course – laundry! New friendships and connections are being made with our neighbors. The Laundry Ministry goes well beyond the once a month ministry at the laundromat. This ministry also hosts a variety of meals and events throughout the year. The Outreach team continues to dream of ways to make new disciples of Jesus and be good stewards of the $5,000 grant awarded by Capitol Area Community Ministries. Want to be a part of this exciting, vital, and rapidly growing ministry? See Outreach Chair Sherri Mettle for more information ([email protected]).

FLU SHOT CLINIC The Health & Wellness Cabinet will be sponsoring a Flu Shot Clinic again this fall. The Flu Shots will be given here Sunday, October 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. by CVS Pharmacy. They are able to give regular dose for ages 9 and up, and the high dose for seniors. Please bring your insurance card or a copy of it for payment, no cash. In September, watch for the sign-up on the back of the Connection Card. Questions? Call Marie Dilley at 614-882-4951.

What’s Your Gift? Do you have a heart for those who don’t yet know Jesus? Do you have the gift of hospitality? Are you a dreamer? Or would you simply like more information on the ways the Outreach Committee is engaged in the community to make new disciples of Jesus Christ? If so, please contact Outreach Chair, Sherri Mettle, or Pastor Jennifer Casey at [email protected] for more information.

The study will start the week of September 10. For more information, contact Bev Pancoast.

Church of the Master Campus Ministry News continued CROSSROADS CAMPUS MINISTRY - Monday Evenings 8:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Crossroads is a faith community affiliated with Church of the Master United Methodist Church specifically for college students. Crossroads is an official student organization at Otterbein University. Our mission is simple. Love God. Grow in Christ. Live to Serve. We are an inclusive community striving to be the hands of feet of Christ. Although many of us come from different backgrounds, cities and towns, here in this place, we are one. We are a welcoming community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and purpose. Our service is casual. Come as you are, not what the world thinks you should be. We celebrate differences. ANYONE is welcome to come and worship.

YOU are welcome! YOU are accepted! YOU are loved!

#YouBeYou OTTERBEIN UNIVERSITY HOMECOMING PARADE HOSPITALITY-SEPTEMBER 22

9:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Campus Ministries would like to offer Hospitality to those who are attending the Homecoming parade. It passes Church of the Master and it will be a great opportunity to reach out to the students, alumni, and families that are on Campus during Homecoming. We will offer water, coffee, hot cocoa, and tea outside the Red Doors on Grove Street. If you are interested in helping, please contact Bev Pancoast ([email protected] or 330-416-4656)

MONDAY MORNING COFFEE MINISTRY: Monday mornings 7:10 a.m.— 9:30 a.m. Church of the Master will once again be offering coffee, hot cocoa, and tea to students who have early morning classes on Monday morning. Master Volunteers make the coffee and serve it to the students We are looking for at least 2 more volunteers as we have 2 volunteers that cannot help this semester. It’s a great opportunity for those who like to be up early and you can drink all the coffee, hot cocoa, and tea that you would like! If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Bev Pancoast ([email protected] or 330-4164656)
