Series: MAKE IT COUNT (2) What Happy People Do to Stay That Way Psalm 32 September 14, 2014

We are made by God and for God for a purpose. - Few things in life are as important as finding your purpose. It is virtually impossible to move forward with God if you are stuck in your past. - We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it. God’s purposes are not limited by our past. There are many examples of that in Scripture, & He can do amazing things with the rest of your life too. God specializes in giving people fresh starts.
*Own Your Sin - The word “my” is used 4 times in that verse. * The first thing we typically do after our sin is exposed is to start assigning blame. - You’ll never be happy that way. * The second thing we often do is to defend it.
*Hate Your Sin * This is the idea of seeing things from the perspective of one you’ve wronged. Not only are you admitting it, you are changing your perspective. - Many confess because the consequences got painful. They got caught, embarrassed – but their attitude toward sin hasn’t changed.
V. 9 *
Psalm 32 is one of 7 penitent psalms (repentance) -
Vv 1-2 * This is connecting happiness with forgiveness. - It is saying there is something wrong with you and in order to be happy you have to deal with it.
Vv 3-4 * This is a reference to the miserable year David was silent about his sin. * Guilt is a moral alarm that tells you when you’re outside God’s boundaries.
V. 5
Our focus is on behavior; God focuses on the heart, the real you. Until you deal with heart, any change you make will be superficial. (Note v. 10, 11)
Vv 6-7
*Rest in God’s Forgiveness - When Jesus died on the cross, Scripture says He cried out with a loud voice, “It is finished.” *
We often have voices condemning us for our sin… - The way to get rid of internal voices of guilt is not to ignore them, but to drown them out with louder shouts of the gospel.
