The small sided game • SSF largest adult football participation sector in English football. • 1.2 million adult male and female participants play small sided football at least once a week; this compares to the 700,000 adults that play 11-a-side. • 85% of Sport England Active People respondents who play small sided football don’t play other forms of the game. • These formats of the game increasingly fit with people’s flexible lifestyles, and desire to play casually and socially. And for the better players, Futsal offers an achievable elite pathway. • Desirable format for under represented groups.

The role of the FA SSF Development Fund • Key influencer and tool for partnership building with the SSF Sector 1. County FA 2. Local Authorities (GIFO’s) 3. FE and HE (CCFC’s) • 64 projects > £320K invested > 25,000 new participants > 2,800 new teams = key driver for Growth in 2008-12 NGS • Extensive insight into market trends, target audiences, marketing and promotion and innovation. • Initiated new SSF products and projects that would never have been launched

SECTION 2: PROJECT PROPOSAL 2.1) What are the key aims and objectives of your project?

• • • •

Develop intramural men’s and women’s 5-a-side football leagues, and a men’s futsal league, to provide students at the University of xxxxxxxxxxx an opportunity to participate in small sided indoor football in a fun yet competitive environment Focus on unengaged groups of students, e.g. international students, first year students in halls of residence, and females Affiliate these leagues to the FA and join the Respect programme etc, to ensure that these leagues are of high quality Improve referee recruiting and training processes for these small sided leagues to support our football referee academy work Provide these students with links to wider community football programmes by signposting them to our 11v11 leagues, the University and local league football clubs etc, by working with partners such as BUCS, Hampshire FA, and local leagues such as Pitch Invasion Encourage the students to make the transition to adult 11v11 football by building relationships with at least one local FA affiliated adult league. 2.2) What do you plan to deliver? (Please provide an outline of the content of the project and how you plan to deliver it, including any strategies for making it a success)

We will develop a new male 5v5 football league of 8 teams, a new male futsal league of 8 teams, and a new female 5v5 football league of 6 teams. This will create 22 new teams and approx 176 new players. Below explains what we intend to do and how we will achieve it. • • • • • • • •

Meet with County FA to ensure that the small sided football leagues are of high quality by adopting FA policies such as, league rules and regulations, code of conduct for players, FA affiliation etc. Work with the County FA to embed the Respect programme into the leagues to help improve standards. Identify a couple of student volunteers to act as coordinators, and recruit a league organiser to support the leagues. Create a clear marketing/delivery plan to promote the new activity . Create a brand and offer package for the students to encourage sign up promoting progression, social and health benefits Run 1 Mars Just Play festival to launch the new league with the support from the FA at the start of the academic year, where students can turn up and play for free, students who don’t have teams can be put into teams Teams will be charged to enter each intramural league . Money will be reinvested into the league development so the leagues are sustainable long term, this will work at approximately £2 per person per fixture. Deliver 1 small sided football referee course for students to train 14 new student referees who can then support and referee these small sided intramural leagues. The small sided referee course along with further training and mentoring from the FA will support the work we are doing as a football referee academy. Plan a finals day where all league finals are played on the same day/ weekend to keep the players involved. Ensure that the University football club watch the finals, the finals day is promoted so there are spectators, and the FA provide support our presentations. Run a small sided tournament each semester so all teams have the opportunity to play all teams in other leagues, and further new teams/players can get involved if they are unable to commit to a league format. Source appropriate links with the community so students have exit routes into local clubs to continue playing football outsid of the University. We plan to link and build relationships with 5-a-side Pitch Invasion league, so we can signpost our students to get involved in this league which takes place at our xxxxxxxx sports facilities on Thursday evenings.
