Even if you do not have grandkids, you will appreciate the humor... My young grandson telephoned the other day to wish me happy birthday. He asked how old I am and I replied 80. There was a moment of silence and then he asked, “Did you start at one?” A little girl was diligently typing away on her grandmother’s word processor and told her tutu that she was writing a story. Tutu asked what the story was about. The keiki replied, “I don’t know. I can’t read.” A fire truck zoomed past a preschool playground with a Dalmatian dog on the front seat. The children began to discuss the dog’s duties: “They use him to keep the crowds back.” “No, he is just for good luck.” The playground lady could barely keep from laughing when one said, “They use dogs to find the fire hydrants.” A 6 year old was asked where his grandma lived. “She lives at the airport and when we want her, we just get her. When her visit is over, we take her back to the airport.”

Spring/Summer 2014 CURING HEARING LOSS - WILL HEARING AIDS BECOME OBSOLETE? Scientists are working on a cure for hearing loss using chickens and mice. Chickens have a natural ability to restore their damaged hearing. The researchers are hopeful they will be able to duplicate this ability to allow humans to restore damaged cells in the inner ear. The research focuses on how the supporting cells in a chicken’s ear turn into hair cells as well as finding potential medications to help the process. The Indiana University School of Medicine Research Department has successfully grown inner ear hair cells in mice using stem cells. The goal is to have a cure for hearing loss within ten years. Until a cure is found, Ohana Hearing Care can help anyone with a hearing loss live life to the fullest using the very latest in hearing instrument technology. Call 593-2137 today for a free consultation.

HEARING CARE

For Your Health

By D. Kona Smith Ohana Hearing Care Founder & Director

Senior citizens, age 65 & over, make up over 20% of our population. However, they account for over 33% of all pedestrian fatalities. This means that seniors are almost twice as likely to be killed by an automobile than the general populace. Most elderly pedestrian fatalities result from inattention, carelessness, medical conditions or medication effects. Plus, as we age, reflexes slow, agility decreases and eyesight/hearing become less acute. These physical changes make it hard to judge traffic distance/speed and to take evasive action if necessary. It is important for older pedestrians to take street crossing seriously and appreciate the dangers. There is a very serious risk of injury and death even if they are hit by a relatively small, slow moving vehicle. Bear in mind that, just because you’re in a crosswalk,

this does not assure your safety. An accident will forever change the lives of all involved. Here are some ideas to cross streets safely: 1. Use crosswalks when available or cross at street corners, not in the middle of the block. Always look both ways. Never step off the curb without looking both ways. 2. Establish eye contact with the driver. Never assume that you are seen. 3. Watch for turning vehicles. 4. At night wear light colored or reflective clothing. 5. Obey pedestrian signals: The walking man icon means it is okay to step off the curb into the crosswalk after looking to make sure there is no traffic coming. The orange blinking hand means finish crossing but do not enter the crosswalk. The steady orange hand means do not step off the curb into the crosswalk wait. Be aware that there is a $130.00 fine for not obeying these signals as well as for jaywalking. Another place to be very careful is a parking lot. When you hear a car engine start or see back up lights, remember that the driver may not see you. More and more drivers today are in a hurry or driving distracted. Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for yourself. "I have been wearing hearing aids for over 25 years. As a physician I found that in all that time specialist Nhan Tran is the only person who took the time to really understand my special requirements to allow me to perform my job optimally. Not only do the staff at Ohana Hearing take care of the professional needs but they become friends and family." G.S. MD.
