Prepare for a New Year, A New You! As another new year approaches, we tend to look ahead to what personal changes can be made, both inwardly and outwardly. Many times we look to enhance who we were the prior year…feeling feeling better about who we are is usually a personal goal and the professionals in the aesthetic world can certainly help client’s boost their confidence. Most popular questions asked by Skin Care Solutions patients’ and answers provided by Dr. Kath Fearon.

Touch laser delivers both immediate and lasting relief. It is a simple in office procedure that takes less than five minutes, requires no anesthesia, no downtime, and restores vaginal health by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization in the vaginal tissue.

What are the best preventative measures for aging skin?

A non-invasive targeted fat reduction treatment that works by using a freezing technique called Cryolypolis, which allows your fat cells to go through a death process after treatment over a couple days, weeks and months. The body eliminates the dead fat cells which results in a smaller more contoured appearance. These results are both permanent and effective. It is very important to choose an advanced certified Coolsculpting consultant to see if you’re a candidate and to give an honest opinion of treatment options.

We recommend the following lifestyle tips; NO smoking, DO NOT use tanning beds, it is essential to wear sunscreen daily, and eat a healthy balanced diet. It is best to avoid refined sugars, processed carbohydrates, eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, and stay hydrated with appropriate water consumption. The use of medical grade skin care products and services; such as chemical peels, laser and microdermabrasions will help to stimulate collagen and elastin, which maintains your skin’s elasticity and prevents sagging skin while keeping a healthy glow. Botox helps preventively by inhibiting repetitive muscle contraction that creates wrinkles and lines. Fillers restore volume loss that naturally occurs with aging for a refreshed look.

What is Coolsculpting and how does it work?

Ring in The New Year Looking and Feeling Your Best! Skin Care Solutions, a physician directed medical spa can help you, too!

I have heard of the The MonaLisa Laser… What is it?

We have recently introduced our newest laser which is designed for vaginal health. When estrogen levels decline after menopause, breast cancer or a hysterectomy, many changes can occur. Millions of women experience changes in their vaginal health that interfere with their personal lives as a consequence. Changes can include painful intercourse, vaginal dryness, vaginal irritation, recurring urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and urinary incontinence. The MonaLisa

Hair Experts Share Holiday Trends By: Dolly Hanreck and Alberta Skraba

The team at Legacy Hair Studio has traveled the country to complete specialized training, and we are all ready to help our guest’s look and feel great for the holidays. This season, the depth of the shadow root and creamy tones of honey and beige are creating dimension in lighter shades. Sweet new trends are swirling around for brunettes, add flattering warmth when sun-bronzed skin starts to fade. Hand-painted face-framing sections and shades of toffee, caramel and brown sugar are adding subtle, but gorgeous dimension to brown hair ranging from light to dark. Many of these looks are created with a handpainted application for a soft blended look that works on any hair. The trend is also moving towards a more “natural” look, using pastel tones in every color of the rainbow. LOB’s are back! Some may argue the trend really never left, but the long-bob and traditional bob are here for the season. Often we will start with the longer version of the cut—and by the New Year—clients are ready for the shorter, yet still very versatile version that allows for styling options. So let’s wrap ourselves in the warmth and colors of the season from head to toe. Let’s take a moment to slow down and enjoy the spirit of the season. Happy Holidays From Our Family To Yours! NEW YEAR NEW YOU

Can I Really Stop The Crazy Food Cravings & Lose Weight? IT’S NOT A LACK OF WILL POWER. In 2012, when I was approached to open a Last Diet Ever clinic here in Medina by Dr. Heilman and Dr. Susan Graham, the founders of the Last Diet Ever in Sandusky, Ohio, I jumped at the chance! I had completed the program, lost over 50 lbs. and at that point had kept the weight off for over two years! I believed in the program! It had changed my life dramatically not only in appearance but also internally, by resetting my metabolism and giving me a new lease on life. This was my chance to help others get a new lease on their lives! As we age, many changes occur in our bodies that we are not prepared for and/or have control over. The protocol at Last Diet Ever helped me to make the necessary lifestyle changes that were sabotaging and keeping me from living a longer and healthier life. In 2007, I read about Dr. Simeon’s weight loss protocol from his manuscript called "Pounds and Inches." There were many aspects of this protocol that spoke to me, and I thought if I EVER see this protocol near my home, I would give ONE more diet a chance. If I gained the weight back afterward, as I had done on other programs, I would just reserve myself to go the medication route - whether it be for sleep, diabetes, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol. UGH! We know there are many factors that play a part in weight gain that is not necessarily our fault. Besides not sleeping well, being stressed out, or experiencing pain can lead to weight gain. Age is another factor. It seems like when we reach our late 40's and early 50's, it is more difficult to maintain our weight or for some reason, we just cannot get that 5 to 8 pounds off that we may have gained over the Christmas holidays or during the winter months. This affects men, as well as women and even some of the medications that our doctors are prescribing can cause you to gain weight. I will say, I am not 20 anymore. I was tired, had little or NO energy, not getting much sleep, mostly due to snoring. Yes, I am a woman, and I snored!

I am now in my 60's, have more energy, feel and look great and am so glad that I took a chance on another weight loss protocol. This program is not for everyone, but if you would like to learn more about Last Diet Ever . . . Please, please call me Directly at 330-721-1422 ask about our FREE Report on Factors Affecting Your Weight Loss. Or, if you'd like you can schedule a FREE - Confidential Evaluation - we can determine if this program will work for you. $60 OFF Initial Protocol!

“Over this past year, I have learned to make better eating choices, by reading labels plus I JUST do not desire some of the foods that I thought I had to have. Paula was there every step of the way!”~ Nancy H. Paula completes a thorough evaluation offering a medically supervised, supportive program for healthy weight loss.

Nancy started her weight loss journey in August of 2016. She is now down over 86 lbs. and 52 inches! Call me, Paula, TODAY at 330-721-1422 to schedule a FREE - CONFIDENTIAL Consultation to see if this protocol will work for you.

When your quality of sleep declines and becomes insufficient, this affects our appetite, causing sugar cravings. When you don't get enough sleep or if the quality of your sleep is poor, your brain gets tired and needs more sugar. A chemical called "Ghrelin" is released in the body and drives you to find sugar. Because it is a "survival mechanism," it is difficult to resist. In other words, CRAVINGS! One suggestion for better sleep is exercise, but if you have back, hip or knee pain that can limit what you can do. Schedules may not allow you the time or the energy to pursue an exercise program. Not all of us want to exercise, even though we should. 4

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

Finding Balance During the Holidays By Debbie Kacic, LMT, Reiki Master Do you feel like you have too much on your plate right now? Did you know that the holiday season ranks as one of the largest causes of stress in our lives? Now more than ever is the time to take care of ourselves! Balance is the key to enjoying a happy and healthy holiday season. Stress has become normal in our society and is the cause of physical and mental illness for millions of us. It first manifests with insomnia, a racing heart, dizziness, weight gain, muscle aches and even obsessive thoughts. Small amounts of stress can be a good thing, keeping us alert and on task. But unrelenting stress, whether from overbooked schedules, financial strain, or little sleep can lead to a breakdown of body, mind, and spirit. Give your mind a break: Slow down and simplify your life. Choose to do only those things and attend only those events that will nourish your health and well-being. Take care of your body: By eliminating bad habits, and developing good ones, you can decrease stress and build up your energy supply. Spend at least one hour each month on the massage table, maybe two this month. And during the winter flu season, add the steam tent to your session to help you detox. All of this will help to reduce the stress hormones produced by your body and replenishes your energy system. Feed your soul: Having a spiritual connection to a higher power has been shown in research to positively influence the outcome of stress. Find your connection, your center of being, and maintain that connection

through religious practice, meditation or creative expression. Whatever feels best for you. Take time for you. Slow down, enjoy the season upon us. We’d love to help, so give us a call. Pick up gift certificates for those special people on your Christmas list. It's a gift they're sure to love, and it's already wrapped! Debbie Kacic, LMT, is the owner of Nature's Touch Wellness Center celebrating 17 years in Medina. She has assembled a caring, knowledgeable team to offer various treatments for her clients in a quiet, peaceful setting away from the hustle and bustle of life. Debbie’s passion is to be a partner in health for all of her clients. “Our life’s work is to help you take care of you!”

Are You at Risk for Heart Disease? Women usually develop heart disease about 10 to 15 years later than men. This is because until menopause, the ovaries produce estrogen. Estrogen protects women against plaque buildup. But at menopause the ovaries stop making estrogen, and your risk goes up. By age 70, women have about the same risk for heart disease as same-aged men. Menopause isn't the only reason getting older is a risk factor. As people age, arteries get stiffer and thicker. Also, systolic blood pressure (the top number) often goes up. These changes contribute to plaque buildup in artery walls. (womenshealth.gov) You can control the following risk factors by making lifestyle changes. Your doctor might also suggest medicine to help control some risk factors, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol: • Poor blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels • Lack of physical activity • High blood pressure • Drinking alcohol • Cigarette smoking • Sleep apnea • Diabetes • Metabolic syndrome • Being overweight or obese Dr. Yatish Goyal welcomes Dr. Priyanka Sharma, MD, FACP, FHM to the practice. As internal medicine doctors, Dr. Goyal and Dr. Sharma are trained and equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings, no matter how common or rare or how simple or complex. They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic

problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness, disease prevention, women's health, substance abuse, mental health, as well as effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, and reproductive organs.

Combat the Common Cold with Food! The common cold can really put a damper on our winter activites. Traditional Chinese Medicine categorizes the common cold into two distinct patterns, wind-cold invasion or wind-heat invasion. Wind-cold symptoms include headache, runny nose with clear discharge, neck and shoulder aches, and aversion to cold. Wind-heat symptoms include sore throat, headache, cough, fever or elevated body temperature and body aches Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches us that food is medicine and miso soup is a great treatment for either type of the common cold. Start with 3-4 cups of water and add sliced ginger. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add two tablespoons of Miso paste. Stir until dissolved. It is important not to boil the miso as it will kill the probiotics. Add sliced scallion at the end of cooking. For wind-cold add these warming veggies: squash, green beans, sweet potato, kale. Add veggies to the simmering stock for 10-15 minutes or until tender. For wind-heat add these cooling veggies: bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, corn, mushrooms, spinach, swiss chard, turnip, zucchini, bamboo shoots, button mushrooms, carrot, dandelion greens, potato.

Top 5 Exercise New Year’s Resolutions Exercising more is a great resolution. It can help you lose weight, build muscle, make daily tasks easier to perform and improve your overall health. Here are a few specific ways you can make your exercise resolutions more effective. 1. Start Off Slow. Most people have an ambitious New Year’s Resolution of “getting into shape.” This broad goal can have many benefits if done properly, but too many people jump into it without truly knowing how to do it. Starting an exercise routine after long periods of inactivity can put a lot of stress on your body leading to overuse injuries. Starting off slow will allow your body to gradually get used to your workout, prevent injuries and get into shape faster. 2. Exercise With Others. Find a sport or organized activity to get involved with. Whether it’s a group that bikes together or friends that play basketball, group exercising is a great way to get physically active. If you play a sport you enjoy, time flies by very quickly. Having fun while exercising will make for a much better workout and you are much more likely to stick to an activity you enjoy. 3. Start a Well Rounded Routine. When starting a new routine, be sure to include all components of fitness: flexibility, cardiovascular and strength training. Concentrating only on one instead of all will cause you to miss out on key benefits unique to each component. 4. Find a Workout Buddy. When starting an exercise resolution, one of the best ways to ensure success is to find a workout buddy. Jumping into a routine alone can be overwhelming. Finding a workout buddy will help you create a workout routine and stay motivated long after the New Year is over. It’s a lot harder to let a friend down than it is yourself. A friend can push you to work harder and help you stay focused on your ultimate goal. 5. Start a Workout Journal. Tracking your progress will let you know if you’re moving in the right direction. You should keep track of weights, number of repetitions and cardio times/intensities. Each time you do a workout, you can compare your new results to the ones you’ve written down to make sure you’re steadily improving. You can also keep track of other metrics including body weight and body fat percentage.

The Bottom Line

WHAT IS PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE? By Mary South, MD

The dictionary definition of prolapse is “to slip forward or down,” but pelvic organ prolapse is a broad term that is used to describe a variety of prolapse conditions: • Cystocele (bladder/anterior vaginal wall) • Enterocele (top of the vagina) • Uterine/vaginal (apical prolapse/uterus) • Rectocele (posterior vaginal wall/rectum).

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PROLAPSE?

Women with prolapse have a wide variation in their experience of symptoms. Some women feel vaginal pressure and notice a bulge coming from their vagina when they wipe after urinating. Other women may be asymptomatic and not feel anything. Women with a slight drop or bulge may be aware and bothered by the prolapse, while others with the same amount of prolapse might not even know that it is happening. Other symptoms can include difficulty placing or retaining a tampon, difficulty emptying the bladder and pelvic “heaviness.”

HOW IS PROLAPSE TREATED?

Treatment is based on the severity of the

HEALTH & WELLNESS

symptoms. Except for rare extreme cases, prolapse is not dangerous or harmful. Many physicians don’t even start the conversation about treatment unless the patient is annoyed or bothered by the symptoms. Treatment for pelvic organ prolapse consists of expectant management (“watch and wait”), pessary or surgical repair. In some cases, prolapse will worsen over time and for others, it may not. Whether it’s a stage 1 or a stage 4 prolapse, the treatment and repair are the same. In short, delaying treatment does not make it harder to repair or recover. A pessary is a silicone device that comes in many shapes and sizes and is inserted in the vagina much like a diaphragm that is used for contraception. Essentially, the pessary props up the prolapse and helps relieve some of the pressure and bulge symptoms. Finally, surgery is always an option. There are a variety of surgical approaches that are recommended based on the type of prolapse and what makes the patient most comfortable (i.e., more or less invasive, mesh or no mesh). If you think you are experiencing prolapse or have any other pelvic floor concerns, please call 234-205-2040 to set up your appointment.

MEN YOU SHOULD KNOW

Don’t Let Shoulder Injuries Sideline You By Michael Magoline, MD Every year millions of people visit their physician due to shoulder injuries. One of the most important parts of your shoulder, your rotator cuff, consists of muscles and tendons that hold your shoulder in place and help you lift and rotate your arm. A rotator cuff tear is a common cause of pain and disability among adults. Rotator cuff tears can be caused due to a sudden injury, but can also occur as a natural deterioration of the tendon tissue due to aging. Common injuries to the rotator occur from lifting a heavy object or suffering a traumatic fall, but most rotator cuff problems develop over time because of the degenerative wear and tear that comes with aging. That is why most rotator cuff injuries are commonly seen in patients over the age of 40. Symptoms of a rotator cuff injury or tear can include recurrent pain, especially with certain activities; pain that prevents you from sleeping on your injured side; grating or cracking sounds when moving your arm; a limited ability to move your arm; and muscle weakness. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to visit your healthcare provider for appropriate evaluation. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is often used as a helpful tool in appropriately diagnosing and managing rotator cuff injuries. Most rotator cuff injuries respond to non-surgical, conservative treatment. Nonsurgical management of shoulder injuries includes rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications and an occasional cortisone injection. However, if non-surgical treatments are not satisfactory and continued pain persists, surgery may be necessary. With modern surgical techniques, the vast majority of injuries to the shoulder and rotator cuff can be managed arthroscopically with minimally invasive techniques that greatly decrease pain, speed up recovery and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

in providing stability and strength to the shoulder joint. Seeking immediate treatment for a shoulder injury aids in a correct and timely diagnosis allowing for appropriate management of these injuries and ultimately a successful recovery. If you are experiencing continued shoulder pain, it is time to see a shoulder specialist such as the board-certified, fellowship trained surgeons at Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center to help you get back to your active life.

PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Michael Magoline, MD,

Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Michael R. Magoline, M.D., a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, graduated from Washington and Lee University and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship at Brook Army Medical Center, his orthopaedic residency at Summa Health System, and a fellowship in Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond, VA. During active duty in the US Army, Dr. Magoline worked as a flight surgeon, experienced multiple deployments, and in 2003 served as chief of orthopaedic surgery at Bagram Hospital in Afghanistan. He received three Army commendation medals. Dr. Magoline specializes in arthroscopic surgery, shoulder and knee reconstruction, and total joint replacement. He sees patients at the Crystal Clinic’s Hudson and Montrose offices.

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Magoline and the #1 orthopaedic group in Northeast Ohio, call (888) 826-0539 or visit www.CrystalClinic.com/Appointment.

Quick QuickAccess Access Quick Care Available

QuickCare

The goal of any shoulder surgery is to provide pain relief and restore strength, function and range of motion to the shoulder joint and upper extremity when more conservative measures such as physical therapy and rest have failed. Arthroscopic shoulder surgery involves making very small incisions around the shoulder and visualizing the shoulder anatomy (including the rotator cuff) with a very sophisticated camera that allows the surgeon to repair the injured tissue with small instruments and minimal disruption to the non-injured tissue around the rest of the shoulder. This results in much less scar tissue formation, less pain, a much lower risk of infection and a faster recovery time for the patient.

In addition to our specialty-trained orthopaedic staff, Crystal Clinic offers QuickCare &that has Injuries access to a full range of services to for aOrthopaedic Sports care for your orthopaedic injury or condition. You can receive X-rays, suturing for minor lacerations, splinting, casting, and durable medical equipment like braces and boots. And, if any follow up care is needed, we can refer our patients to the main campus or one of our satellite offices in Medina, Portage, and Summit counties.

Injuries to the rotator cuff are very common and should be taken seriously because of the important role this structure plays

Even as we celebrate the holidays and spend time with family and friends, we are looking forward to the New Year. This is a time of reflection and planning. We look back at 2017 with fond memories, perhaps sad experiences, and our accomplishments. As 2018 begins, we are hopeful that this year we will keep our New Year resolutions, stick with our promises, and reach our goals. We all have a clean slate January 1 and a chance for a fresh start.

One of our goals is to continue to search for and find new information and resources to share with our readers. Each year we confirm our mission: To Empower Women Through Knowledge. Since 2004, we have remained true to this mission. As we end another successful year, we would like to thank our advertisers for providing our readers with relevant information and for helping us donate over $10,000 in advertising grants in 2017 to local non-profit charitable organizations. Also thanks to our readers for your loyalty!

Is Stress Taking It’s Toll On Your Health? By Leah Kline PA-C Fatigue and low energy are some of the most common health complaints we experience in the medical field today. Many women come to our office with an understanding or self-diagnosis that they are suffering from “adrenal fatigue.” This is a term used to suggest that the adrenal glands are working insufficiently to regulate hormones due to chronic stress. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include excessive tiredness, insomnia, musculoskeletal pain, brain fog, and inability to lose weight. Sufferers are often told that they are not dealing with their stress well and need to “relax” more. The truth is, our bodies have a finetuned mechanism in dealing with stress. The adrenal glands, which sit above the kidneys, are responsible for regulating the body’s stress and production of hormones. Stress is commonly misconstrued as only being “emotional stress” that you feel, like when you are mad at your spouse, dealing with financial struggles, or overwhelmed at work. Stress also includes “chemical stress,” like eating foods that your body is sensitive to, processed foods, exposure to molds or heavy metals. Then there is “physical stress,” possibly from injury to the spinal cord from slips, falls, car accidents; stress on the nervous system, like sitting at a desk for several hours per day; and infection or illness. The autonomic nervous system is made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for activating the adrenal glands when the body is under stress, initiating the “fight or flight” response; it acts like a gas pedal in a car. In this state, the heart rate increases, muscles contract, the digestion process slows, and blood sugar is released from storage sites. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for restoring the body to a balance and allowing for rest and repair; it acts like a brake pedal. In this state, the heart rate drops, digestive enzymes are released, and muscles relax. The body will innately begin to compensate in the attempt to fix the stressor to ensure survival. If the stressor is present for too long or becomes too overwhelming to the system, the adrenal glands cannot keep up with the demand of the body, and they become fatigued. Although the term “adrenal fatigue” is accurate and can produce the symptoms listed above, it isn’t the whole story.

When the body is under chronic stress, whether it be physical, emotional, or chemical; the sympathetic nervous system takes over, and the body is unable to come up with enough energy on its own to restore the balance, this is called Sympathetic Dominance. This is a serious problem, as the sympathetic dominant state creates longterm health concerns and leads to the onset of serious illness and disease. Treating the adrenal glands alone is not helping to supply the system with energy to truly heal the body. At Advanced Health and Wellness Center we have better answers! Call for an appointment today to learn more about sympathetic dominance and its effects on your long-term health. Leah began working at Advanced Health and Wellness Center in February, 2013. She earned her Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Cleveland State University in 2012 and Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from the University of Akron. She has become passionate about practicing functional medicine and strongly believes the body is able to heal itself with proper nutrition and creating an energy abundance in the nervous system. She lives in Wadsworth with her husband, Bryan, and her two sons, Keegan and Rowan. Leah enjoys being outdoors, traveling, and spending quality time with family.

MEN YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Health Benefits of Restoring Your Hormones to the Proper Levels

Hormone levels can be affected by many factors. These may include stress, age, lifestyle and nutrition. Hormones can also change due to a thyroid conditions, ovulation problems, premature menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or glandular issues. Hormones and hormone replacement therapy is an important topic and there is a lot of confusing, misinformation. I Jeffrey A. Potter, would like to invite you to join me at our display booth at The Women’s Journal Health and R.Ph. Wellness Event, on March 8th, at Root Candle.

Apothecaries succeeds in formulating new approaches to help those who did not benefit from conventional protocols of medicine. Through clinical knowledge, technology, experience, specialized pharmaceuticals and nutritional products and services, our sincere intention is to advance therapeutic outcomes and relieve our patients of their medical struggles. As medicinal chemists, we collaborate as a team with medical professionals to alleviate or eliminate insurmountable medical issues. We specialize in Hormone Replacement Therapy, Pain Management and Veterinary Medicine.

How Do You Know If You Are Suffering From A Hormonal Imbalance?

Signs and symptoms of a hormonal imbalance may include dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, depression, headache, acne, weight gain, bloating, decreased sex drive and changes in menstruation.

What Is The Best Way To Test For An Imbalance?

Scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between steroid hormone levels in saliva and the amount of active hormone in the blood. Saliva testing can be done anywhere anytime. Testing that relies on blood drawn in the doctor’s office makes it harder to obtain samples at a specific times (such as early in the morning) or multiple times during the day. In addition, hormones in the saliva are exceptionally stable and can be stored at room temperature for up to a week without affecting the accuracy of the result. This offers maximum flexibility in sample collection and shipment. Clinical Apothecaries offers Saliva Testing. It is an accurate, painless and convenient way to detect an imbalance. If there is an imbalance, we will meet with the client and work with their doctor to develop a personalized plan. Having a healthy balance can provide many benefits for both men and women including:

Ask the Expert...What you want to know and more! What’s Wrong with Soap and Water?

Amy “J” Juncewicz Owner/Advanced Esthetician

When it comes to caring for the skin, pH matters! Remember the pH scale from chemistry class? That very same scale is used to evaluate how closely a skin care product mimics the natural pH of the skin. Human skin is slightly acidic with a value of 4.5 – 5.5 on the pH scale. This amazing protective barrier prevents the entry of harmful bacteria and other environmental factors while retaining natural oils and moisture. It’s easy to unintentionally “mistreat” the skin with products not properly matched to the skin’s natural properties. Applying products that are too alkaline (6 and higher) or too acidic (4 and lower) can overwork the skin and trigger unwanted results. Generally speaking, most soap and many facial cleansers fall between 7 and 9 on the pH scale! And some of the soaps that we watched Grandma use are 10s and 11s! Subjecting the skin to a daily dose of these products can actually undermine the intended results. Schedule a facial treatment and bring your skin care products along for a FREE pH test! Do Away with the term “New Year's Resolution”

Jennifer Frisby, Owner

Whether you’re setting out for the first time with fitness-related New Year’s Resolution or you've been down this road before, there are always two paths you can end up on; Making exercise a year-long (lifelong!) habit, or abandoning your efforts until next year rolls around. Now is the time to set a precedent for success. The simple trick to making a fitness New Year’s resolution last is to accept that getting and staying in shape won’t always be easy. Consider a few tips for how you can continue to stick to your New Year’s resolutions. 1. Do away with the Term “New Year’s Resolution” it is notoriously associated with broken promises. 2. Make small goals out of your Big goal. Small goal being; going to the gym three days out of the week and working out for 45 minutes. 3. Hire a Personal Trainer. There’s no better way to commit to exercise than by hiring a Personal Trainer. He or she can help you get to your goals faster. And when you don’t feel like going to the gym (which will happen), you’ll go anyway because your trainer is there, waiting for you. 4. Plan for the Big Picture! Look past January at what your reasonable goals should and can be.

So What if I Have a Little Trouble Sleeping? by Molly Ludwig Poor sleep quality or insufficient sleep can be very debilitating, far beyond just feeling tired and sluggish in the morning: Sleep quality now may affect cognition later. New clinical trials presented to the Alzheimer’s Association July 17, 2012, from data from more than 15,000 participants in the Nurse’s Health Study showed that women who regularly slept 5 hours or less a night had an increased risk of cognitive decline compared with women who regularly slept 7 hours per night. Major sleep disorders pointed to by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are: Insomnia, Narcolepsy, Restless Leg Syndrome, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Obesity, Depression. The takeaway message is Sleep Is Critical and it should not be taken lightly as the resulting risk of poor health goes far beyond the need to hit that snooze button in the morning. Ask the Expert...What you want to know and more! How Can I KEEP My New Year’s Resolution to Get Healthy This Year?

Vicki Karabinus, Co-Owner

We’ve all done it. With the New Year, we resolve to get healthy. Our intentions are great. So why does it seem that a resolution to take care of ourselves is the hardest to keep? Perhaps it’s because we don’t give ourselves enough time to form the new habit. A recent study found that developing an exercise habit took one and a half times longer than an eating or drinking habit. And the old adage that it takes 21 days to form a habit is just a myth. More realistically, we need to keep at it for at least 6 weeks, and we need to set ourselves up for success right from the beginning. How? • Choose an activity where you can start slow and build. • Put yourself in an environment where you feel comfortable and supported. • Make a date with yourself – put it on your calendar! At HeartSong, you’ll find a comfortable, supportive environment with classes for every age, body type, and ability level. Call us to learn about our 6-WEEK NEW STUDENT SPECIAL and let us help you enjoy a healthier, stronger body for 2018 and beyond!

Is Your Home Ready For Friends & Loved Ones Stopping Over?

By Lisa Cwalinski, Owner

The Holidays are here! The Christmas holidays are a busy time for many people. Besides our everyday schedules, and running a household, there are a lot of other things we take on. Many of us have visitors for the holidays and plan parties, along with that comes decorating, extra cooking and baking, which means extra shopping as well. It is not uncommon to get stressed and feel overwhelmed. This is a good time to hire a professional. Hiring an organizer can give you extra time to enjoy your holidays. They can get the house organized, do some light cleaning, shopping, sort of act as your house manager. Professional Organizers take on all kinds of roles and might be just what you need to help with the extra work load this Christmas season. Wouldn’t you like to enjoy the fun of the holidays instead of wishing them over because they are so stressful and you are too busy to enjoy them? Call me to help!

Looking for the Right Attorney?

Do NOT “Just Sign” the Contract “It's Not Just Boilerplate”

By Attorney, Amy L. Demlow Whether hiring a contractor for services or purchasing goods, it is important that you do not simply sign the contract presented to you with the attitude “it is just boilerplate.” Here are a few key provisions to carefully review: Always pay close attention to the pricing and payment terms. Be sure the contract outlines whether the price is firm or subject to change. If it is subject to change, how long is the price valid and does the price increase and/or decrease during the term of the contract (and/or during a renewal period)? Make certain the terms address if the price of the goods includes freight, charges for packing, packaging, shipping, insurance, or taxes, etc. Watch out for late fees and interest charged on unpaid amounts. Beware that some businesses will try to limit their liability to you to a certain dollar amount or replacement of the product. Make sure you know the limitation of liability because it may not be satisfactory if you are expecting a refund and the seller is only willing to replace the product. Check to make sure you are receiving any warranties promised by the seller of the goods. While it may be customary to disclaim certain express and implied warranties, the nature of the service or goods being purchased may be one where the customer is expecting a certain standard of work or quality of goods from the seller. When reviewing the governing law and venue that would control, be aware that the contract may subject you to a certain state’s

laws or a specific court that is not convenient. In fact, it could be in a state other than where you are located. Sometimes a contract will require a particular dispute resolution for the parties to follow in the event a serious disagreement arises. While a mandatory arbitration clause may appear to be less confrontational, it may prohibit you from filing a lawsuit in your local court should you be unable to resolve the dispute with the other party and your rights to appeal may be more limited. It is important to read all contracts in full before signing. In the event of a dispute, the parties’ written contract is key in determining each parties’ rights. Always seek legal advice if you have questions or concerns about the contract you are being asked to sign.

How to Improve Alertness During Your Workday A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve it to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work doesn’t suffer. AVOID CAFFEINE IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person's energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the late afternoon might get a sudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night's sleep. AVOID HIGH-FAT FOODS AT LUNCHTIME. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when 16

consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat high-fat foods for lunch won't get the afternoon energy boost that low-fat, healthy lunches will provide. SNACK HEALTHY. Professionals who find themselves needing a snack in the mid- to late-afternoon can sate their hunger and give themselves an energy boost by snacking healthy. Avoid snacks like potato chips that tend to be high in fat and low in nutrition. Foods that are high in fiber and/or protein can provide a longer energy boost and quell the afternoon hunger pangs at the same time. Fresh fruit and Greek yogurt fit the bill. CHANGE YOUR WORKOUT SCHEDULE. Regular exercise improves short- and long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

FAMILY LAW

Custody Rights for Unmarried Couples Parenting can be challenging even in the best of times. It is especially true when the parents were never married or have no plans for getting married. In Ohio, the law states that an unmarried mother is the sole legal and residential custodian of the minor child, even if paternity is established. A father does not have any legal right to possession of the child until a court issues an order giving him such rights. A mother may consent to parenting time between the father and child, but she is not required to do so. Adding to the confusion is the fact that child support can be established through a state agency, despite the fact that father does not have legal parenting time rights. This fact often leads to significant confusion among unmarried men since a father who is properly paying his child support often believes he is automatically entitled to parenting time as a result. Ohio law is specific in stating that the payment of monetary support for a child is separate from how much parenting time a father may be awarded. Similarly, even if a biological father of a child chooses to have no contact with the child, he is still responsible for the payment of child support. This is especially true if the child’s mother applies for public assistance. If you become a parent before you get married and marriage to the child’s other parent is not in the near future or likely to happen at all,

JANUARY 4TH

then it is important that you understand your rights and responsibilities as it concerns the child. Courts award custody or parenting time by conducting a thorough review as to what is in a child’s best interest. While mother is the sole legal custodian at the outset of the child’s life, fathers do have rights. They just have to take affirmative steps through the court to exercise them. If you have questions regarding your custody rights, please contact me to schedule a confidential consultation.

Patient Satisfaction

Cellfina™is the only FDA-cleared, minimally invasive procedure clinically proven to treat the primary structural cause of cellulite for at least three years—the longest FDA clearance for a cellulite treatment—is now available at Docere Medical Spa & Laser Center in Strongsville. The Cellfina™ System treats the primary structural cause of cellulite—the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks. These tight bands pull down the skin, creating the puckering you see on the surface of the skin. Similar to a rubberband under tension, once released, the treated skin bounces back to smooth itself out in as little as three days. Cellfina is a straightforward solution to cellulite that combines a proven approach with innovative, proprietary technology, for an effective treatment that produces precise, longlasting results in a single doctor’s office visit. “With Cellfina the results last!” says Dr. Jeff Viscomi, “Patients typically see significant improvement at three months…and those results are still evident three years after treatment.”

Please See Important Safety Information on Slide 6.

In the pivotal study, 96 percent of Cellfina patients were satisfied after two years— surpassing satisfaction rates of other leading cellulite treatments*. The in-office treatment takes less than an hour, depending on the number of dimples being treated and the patient’s individual needs. It is a cellulite solution that doesn’t involve general anesthesia, so afterward patients are able to go about their day. “Cellfina is unique because it treats the primary structural cause, it’s a minimally invasive procedure and its effects lasts at least three years—the longest FDA clearance for a cellulite treatment,” says Dr.Viscomi. “The result is a smoother and healthier look that gives my patients the confidence to wear shorts, yoga pant or a bathing suit.” *Satisfaction rates were evaluated separately and are not based on direct comparisons among treatments. Important Safety Information for Cellfina™ The Cellfina™ System is intended for long-term improvement in the appearance of cellulite in the buttocks and thigh areas of adult females. Safety and effectiveness in other anatomical areas have not been established. The most common side effects reported were soreness, tenderness, and bruising. Tips for Planning the Perfect Honeymoon Honeymoons are big business. According to a recent Conde Nast Bridal Infobank survey, the average couple spends more than $5,000 on their honeymoon, indicating just how much meaning couples assign to their first official trip as newlyweds. If the average spending on honeymoons seems high, it's important for couples working on budgets to realize that there are plenty of ways to plan memorable getaways without breaking the bank. Couples can keep the following strategies in mind as they plan their honeymoons. Plan and book early. In its 2016 Real Weddings Study, online wedding resource The Knot found that the average engagement length was 15 months. That gives couples plenty of time to plan their weddings, but also a great chance to book their honeymoons well in advance of their wedding days. Fifteen months affords couples the chance to piece together the perfect honeymoon on their own or shop around for package deals. Delay the honeymoon. Couples without much wiggle room in their budgets or those who simply want to save money can delay their honeymoons, choosing to take their getaways months after they tie the knot. This provides couples with more traveling flexibility. And 20

depending on when couples get married, delaying the honeymoon may push the trip into the vacationing off-season, when more affordable deals can often be found. Don't shy away from your newlywed status. Resorts might not advertise it, but many offer special amenities to honeymooning newlyweds. Some may provide complimentary spa services, while others might offer free room upgrades if they have any vacancies. Such amenities may be grand or small, but no matter their size, they can make honeymoons feel more special. Give ample consideration to all-inclusive honeymoon packages. Whether couples are working on tight budgets or planning their honeymoons without regard to cost, all-inclusive packages may be worth the extra money upfront. All-inclusive packages tend to include meals, some beverages and fun activities that couples would otherwise have to pay for á la carte. All-inclusive packages may also remove some of the work of planning the honeymoon because couples won't need to tirelessly research activities and find the most affordable local vendors. Couples can examine the nuts and bolts of all-inclusive packages to make sure they include activities and foods they're likely to enjoy. Planning a honeymoon takes work, but much of that work is fun, and couples who do their due diligence can save substantial amounts of money.

Jodi & The Pink Tomato Creative Team Shares Wedding Etiquette:

When should wedding invitations be sent?

Should we include information about our wedding website?

~It is best to include information about the wedding website on your save-the-date card. If you are not sending a “save the date” you can include the web address in the formal invitations with an insert, a small card that informs guests they can find more details online.

Should information about the registry be placed on the invitations or save-the-date card?

Including registry info on the wedding invitations or save-the-date card is considered impolite because it can imply you are asking for gifts. Share with your wedding party, parents and close friends where you are registered, and let them tell guests. It is best to place registry information on the wedding website.

Invitations should be mailed six to eight weeks before the wedding to allow guests time to clear their schedules and make travel arrangements. If planning a destination wedding, send them out three months ahead of time. We recommend sending a “save-the-date card” six to eight months before the date of the wedding.

What is the time frame to request an RSVP?

It is a good idea to have guests RSVP two to three weeks before your wedding date. This allows enough time to get a final head

Get on the Fast Track to Being Organized People are still interested in finding out ways to streamline their lives and conquer the clutter. Even though getting organized may seem like an arduous task, there are ways to get organized and do so quickly. Getting organized is on the mind of people throughout the year, but even more so at the end of December when individuals are making their New Year's resolutions. According to the data pulled from Google by iQuanti, 33,230,420 searches were made about "getting organized" in 2016. People are still interested in finding out ways to streamline their lives and conquer the clutter. Even though getting organized may seem like an arduous task, there are ways to get organized and do so quickly.

include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. Use containers. There are many types of bins and boxes that can be used for organizing, especially toys including Legos.

Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes. Create files on your e-mail account to sort the various purposes of your e-mails; i.e. Personal, Financial, Church, Kids, Family, etc. Create files in Word. This is as important as paper files in keeping documents organized. Use similar topics as for e-mail. Color code paper files. For instance, use Red for client files, Green for personal files, Blue for vendor files, etc.

Hire a professional organizer. Check out our Ask the Expert section to learn more about our local professional organizer.

Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central

location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. Purge closets and cabinets. There's no point allowing old, stained

or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.

Exercise caution before buying. Don't buy more than you need; otherwise, you'll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you're not unwittingly buying duplicates. Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for

papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may Read The Women’s Journal at www.womens-journal.com

Time-Saving Cleaning Tips

Happy New Year

Celebrating 5 Years

By Jesica Wilfong, Owner I love the start of a new year! We all have New Year’s Resolutions, but I think you should consider making some cleaning resolutions for 2018. Cleaning should not be a second job and there are a number of time-saving strategies to keep the mess to a minimum and keep your weekend afternoons free from all-day cleaning marathons. Here are a few of my favorite ways to make cleaning easier in the New Year. Manage the mail. Even in our e-mail age, most still get plenty of snail mail. Open it over a wastebasket so that anything unwanted quickly disappears. Use a Microwave Cover. Even covering with a paper towel prevents food from splattering on the inside of your microwave. It’s much easier to replace dirty paper towel than the inside of your microwave. 10 minutes a day keeps the junk put away. Do a daily walkthrough. Put toys away, hang up coats, sweaters, towels, etc. and put away anything that wandered out during the day. Do one load of laundry every day. Avoid an overflowing, overwhelming amount of laundry to take care of over the weekend. Do one load a day, fold it while you relax and watch TV. Voila! Call PetalSweet Cleaning. House cleaning can be monotonous and time-consuming. If you don’t have those extra 5-9 hours a week and want to feel good about your home, we are your solution. Manage the day to day clean-up with these helpful tips and call us to do the heavy duty cleaning. BUSINESS

Get Organized & Improve Workplace Productivity Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. Employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. • Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. A small percentage of people they dubbed "supertaskers" were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. • Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can use scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings.

Routinely check the schedule, marking off tasks as they're completed. • Cut back on time spent in meetings. A survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. • Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don't have time for breaks during a typical workday. The Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters; mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time. Read The Women’s Journal at www.womens-journal.com

Making Your NEW YEAR’S Resolutions SUCCESSFUL While it's difficult to gauge just how many people make New Year's resolutions each year, various factors suggest millions of people resolve to improve their lives each January. Television segments devoted to healthy resolutions and discounted memberships are just two of many indicators suggesting resolutions are popular and potentially big business.

savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don't be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

As popular as making resolutions may be, reports indicate that they're more popular to make than commit to. For example, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail. So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help.

Successful New Year's resolutions might be hard to come by. But there are ways to stay the course and see resolutions through to realization.

PLAN ON BEING PATIENT. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal. BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal. DON'T BE SHY. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you're also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer insight and/or advice, which can prove invaluable. EXPECT SETBACKS. Just like it's important to be patient, it's equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly 28

Read More Books for Better Health In the New Year Finding time to read more can improve cognition, reduce stress and increase intelligence. The availability of digital content has made it easy to forget how pleasurable it can be to pick up a good book and get lost in a story. In fact, a 2015 Huffington Post/YouGov poll of 1,000 adults in the United States found that 28 percent hadn't read a single book in the previous 12 months. Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health analyzed 12 years of data from the University of Michigan's Health and Retirement Study concerning reading habits. Among the 3,600 participants over the age of 50, those who read books for as little as 30 minutes per day over several years were living an average of two years longer than those who didn't read. Studies have shown that reading improves fluency and story retention while providing a host of additional benefits to young children. However, the perks do not end with the passing of adolescence. Data published in the journal Neurology found reading regularly improves memory function by working out the brain. This can help slow a decline in memory and other brain functions. Frequent brain exercise can lower mental decline by 32 percent, according to research published in The Huffington Post. Studies even suggest that reading can help a person be more empathetic to others' feelings. Research published in the journal Science showed that reading literary works (not popular fiction) cultivates a skill known as "theory of mind," which is the "ability to 'read' the thoughts

and feelings of others." Reading also can be calming, helping to reduce stress as a result. By losing oneself in a book, worries and stress can melt away, says research conducted in 2009 at the University of Sussex. Measuring heart rate and muscle tension, researchers discovered that study participants needed just six minutes to relax once they began reading.

The following tips can help men and women find more time to read:

Find small minutes to read. Busy people may think they don't have the time to devote to reading, but if they read in small intervals, the amount of time will add up. Read during commutes (if you're not driving), while in physicians' waiting rooms or during a lunch hour. It's okay to quit. If you're a few chapters into a book and it's not striking your fancy, it's okay to trade up for a more interesting tale. Don't feel obligated to finish a book if you are not engaged. Read paper books. Reading printed books can be a welcome, relaxing change from looking at screens all day. This may inspire you to read more and for longer periods of time. Join a book club. A book club in which you engage with fellow readers can motivate you to read more often. Finding time to read more can improve cognition, reduce stress and increase intelligence.

BUSINESS

Digital messaging has a huge barrier to overcome in the human brain; and that’s what makes it less effective than print.

Neuromarketing & the Print Advantage (Neuromarketing: a new field of marketing which uses medical technologies such as functional MRIs to study the brain's responses to marketing stimuli.) According to MNI Targeted Media, magazine advertising works. Connection, focus, engagement, emotional involvement—these are the elements of print magazines that simply aren’t found with digital content. Readers are 70% more likely to remember a company name from a print ad than a digital ad. Based on MRI experiments, paper stimulates more senses and is more “real” to the brain than digital media. Based on neuromarketing research done by the Center for Neural Decision Making at Temple University’s Fox School of Business, the study found that digital is good at gaining attention, and both print and digital are good at engagement, accurate recall, and purchase willingness. But print exceeds digital in several key factors including emotional reaction, memory speed, desirability, and assigning product value. Marketers must take a more scientific approach to their multi-channel strategy and make sure print is well represented in the overall mix. The human brain really does process messages differently when viewed online or in printed media according to Britain’s Royal Mail research. The findings were clear: tangible (i.e. printed) materials leave a deeper footprint in the brain; physical material involves more emotional processing, which is important for memory and brand associations; and physical materials produced more brain responses connected with internal feelings, suggesting greater “internalization” of the ads. Your target’s brain is hard wired to receive that message in print, more than digital. That’s the science behind the hype! That is why The Cleveland Women’s Journal is excited and proud to bring our readers local information and resources through our colorful, uncluttered, and relevant magazine that you can actually hold, as well as the digital version of the magazine on our website. NEW YEAR NEW YOU

This is the year!

I am going to... quit smoking! Sound familiar?

By Luciana McCartney Each year, thousands of people make up their minds to quit smoking or lose weight. It is a goal that is always on the front of their minds. Unfortunately, within a few weeks or months, most of those resolutions are gone. The side effects of changing our lives are stressful, unmanageable, and can become overwhelming. The end result, we give up. Since 2005, AcuLaser has had a significant success rate in helping clients quit smoking. One treatment can truly begin to change someone’s life. AcuLaser combines the ancient practice of acupuncture with the new technology of FDA approved low level laser. LLL provides one of the most advanced forms of therapy used today to help clients rid themselves of nicotine and even sugar addictions. Our clients are amazed by how the relaxing, calming, and pain free treatment provides the answer to end their vice. Smoking cessation therapy stimulates pressure points related to irritability, headaches, insomnia, nervousness and cravings, which are just some of the withdrawal symptoms smokers typically experience when trying to quit. Most people become tobacco-free with just one treatment because laser therapy targets acupuncture points directly related to nicotine addiction and eliminates the issues that cause 70% of smokers to give up.

As part of your personalized care and our commitment to see you through your goals, you’ll have an easy-to-follow protocol that includes detoxification, behavior modification, and additional follow-up treatments when needed at no extra cost.

The road to great credit begins with consumers. Consumers who demonstrate an ability to pay bills on time and stay out of debt can make themselves more attractive to prospective creditors, which can ultimately save them thousands of dollars when they purchase homes and/or vehicles. While strong credit scores take years to build, men and women looking to improve their scores can begin doing so rather quickly. Scores will not skyrocket overnight, but they will begin to improve if consumers begin taking the following steps:

PAY DOWN BALANCES AND KEEP THEM LOW. Paying bills on time might not be enough to dramatically improve credit scores if consumers are still only paying the minimum amount each month while maintaining high balances. After payment history, amounts owed is the second biggest influence of most consumers' FICO scores, accounting for 30 percent of an individual's score. So in addition to paying on time, consumers should try to pay more than the minimum amount due each month, ideally paying balances in full each month.

PAY BILLS ON TIME. Paying bills on time is one of the most effective and simplest ways for consumers to improve their credit scores. One of the credit scores lenders use to determine if they will extend credit to a given applicant is the FICO® score, which is generated by the Fair Isaac Corporation. According to the Fair Isaac Corp., a FICO score is broken down into five categories, some of which factor more heavily than others. An individual's payment history accounts for 35 percent of his or her FICO score, making it the most influential of the five factors for people who have been using credit for a long time. (Note: People with a nonexistent or greatly limited credit history may have their FICO scores more influenced by other factors.) If necessary, set up automatic payments so all bills, especially bills owed to creditors such as credit card companies and student loan lenders, are paid on time. STUDY YOUR CREDIT REPORT. Credit scores can sometimes fall victim to errors on a person's credit report. A 2012 Federal Trade Commission Study found that roughly 25 percent of all consumers had errors on their credit reports that adversely affected their credit scores. Consumers who suspect their credit score does not reflect their credit worthiness should examine their reports for mistakes, which are available to all consumers once a year for free. Report any mistakes to Equifax, Experian and/or TransUnion. WAIT TO APPLY FOR NEW LINES OF CREDIT OR MORTGAGES. Consumers' credit scores take a small hit each time they apply for new lines of credit, whether it's a credit card or mortgage. Consumers who want to quickly improve their scores should refrain from applying for new lines of credit until they have increased their scores to a point where they won't mind seeing those scores take a small dip. Consumers' credit scores can affect their lives in various ways. While it takes time to build strong credit histories, consumers can take small steps to begin improving their credit scores right away.

YOU CAN HELP LOCAL TEENS ATTEND PROM

G2K is a wonderful outreach ministry at Harvest Presbyterian Church that provides gowns and accessories to high school students who may not be able to attend the prom due to financial difficulties. But this ministry is more than just making prom dreams come true. We are dedicated to promoting positive self-image and confidence in teen girls based on their identity in Christ and inner beauty. This year our event will be April 14th, 2018 at Harvest Church 1095 Reagan Parkway, Medina Ohio. The girls will be treated to a day of beauty and grace. With the help of a personal shopper each girl has the opportunity to select a prom dress along with shoes, jewelry and a purse. Someone will also be on hand to make free alterations to dresses if need be. The girls will finish the day with a mini-photo shoot, lunch at our Grace Café, prayer, and presentation of a goody bag including a Bible.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

S S E R T S R U O Y G IN C U D E R W O H We’re often told that stress is bad for our health. While the link between stress and heart disease isn’t entirely clear, studies have shown that when you’re stressed your body releases adrenaline into your blood stream, causing your heart rate and blood pressure to go up temporarily. If you’re constantly under stress, your body doesn’t get the chance to rest because you’re always in high gear, and as a result, your artery walls become damaged. Whether you have been diagnosed with heart disease or are working to prevent heart disease, we do know that stress can trigger all of your risk factors. Think about how stress affects you under normal circumstances: It makes you feel anxious, tense or depressed; random aches and pains appear out of nowhere; it can make you gain weight and lose sleep; it can even make you get sick. Now imagine what stress can do if your heart isn’t 100 percent healthy. If it can make a healthy person ill, you can only imagine what it can do to someone who has been diagnosed with heart disease – or worse, someone who has suffered a heart attack or stroke.

Here are a few things you can do to start reducing stress: 1. Take a deep breath. Carve out time for meditation, deep

CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE breathing, yoga or tai chi, crank up some tunes or go for a short walk. Whatever activity you find calming, find the time to do it every day for at least 15 minutes.

2. Give up your vices. Overdoing it with alcohol or caffeine can put stress into overdrive, so try to cut back as much as possible. If you smoke, you already know it’s a bad habit. Drop it. Quitting isn’t easy, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. 3. Burn some steam. Give your endorphins a boost with

regular physical activity. Exercise relieves mental and physical tension, and anyone who has experienced runner’s high knows what we mean. Physically active adults have a lower risk of depression and function better mentally. Try walking, swimming, biking or another form of cardio every day.

4. Consider stress management. If you’re always in a rush, impatient, hostile or constantly stressed, stress management classes might be worth looking into. They’re usually held at community colleges, rehab programs or hospitals, and your healthcare professional can likely recommend one for you. NATIONAL SPONSORS
