The Beacon April 1, 2018

Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n

Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus More Thank Breaking…This is Forever Good News There is a joke where a doctor says to a patient. “I have some good news and some bad news which do you want first?” The patient says, ”I want the bad news first so I can get over it for I am already having a bad day!” The doctor said, “You will die soon if you do not change your eating habits.” “What is the good news?” The doctor said, “You still have time to change your eating habits by not eating ice cream, fried foods, or junk food, and you will live a normal life span.” The man responded with a scowl on his face, “Well, all right then, but what is the good news!” Like the man, our world may miss the good news and focus only on the bad news these days. Years ago, I heard a fellow pastor state that “bad news” travels much faster than “good news.” The pastor went on to say, “when someone hears “bad news” they will share it five times and if the same person hears “good news” they tend to share it only once. Wow! This represents a five to one ratio. That was years ago. I think you could double the ratio today and the negativity of the news has mushroomed. We are fortunate to live in a country with the first amendment of free press to report facts and keep everyone informed of the news. However; being a fan of the first amendment does not mean news always has to be bad, exaggerated, redundant, and disrespectful of common courtesy of people. I watch less and less news these days. Why? News channels have really tilted toward sensationalism and reporting by in large bad news! Listening to bad news all the time zaps the life out of you! We need good news! Our world is thirsty for good news! We the Church, have it! We have the best news the world has ever heard! The Gospel means good news! The Gospel tells us of Jesus who came into the world to save the world, taught us about abundant life, died on the cross, and is raised from the dead, giving eternal life! This good news of Jesus is available for us on this Easter weekend! This good news gives life! In Jesus there is hope for those in despair, light for all walking in darkness, and life abundant and eternal instead that is greater than death. In Jesus we have victory and triumph and He will reign forever! In a world often obsessed with bad news, this good news brings peace for the soul. Let us hear it, live it, and share it! In the words of the Apostle Paul, nothing is greater than this good news, “ For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). May your life be filled with the good news! Have a great Easter weekend!

Shalom, Philip

Merge Young Adults Michelle Carmical - Lead Facilitator | 850-217-0391

Shalimar UMC Merge Young Adult Ministries (18-23) & (23-30ish) has some new and exciting opportunities unfolding, join us on Thursday to experience the beginning of our transformation.

The next study, taught by Pastor Brian Dale, explores what we need to know, even if we are not engaged or married. He will take us into a deeper relationship of understanding with our partner or soon to be partner. “The New Rules of Marriage will introduce us to a radically new kind of relationship, one based on the idea that every woman has the power to transform her marriage, while men, given the right support, have it in them to rise to the occasion. We have never wanted so much from our relationships as we do today. More than any other generation, we yearn for our mates to be lifelong friends and lovers. The New Rules of Marriage shows us how to fulfill this courageous and uncompromising new vision.” See everyone on Thursday at 6:30 pm at #10 2nd Str. Shalimar.

Threads of Love Love to Knit or Crochet? Our “Threads of Love” group is in need of some additional hands to keep up with creating the Prayer Shawls and Baby Blankets that are our ministry. The group meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at the #10 2 nd Street house behind the church from 2:00-3:30 pm. But if you would like to work from your home, the details of the designs and yarn are available. For more information please contact Marilyn Canon at 501-658-4352.

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals

Throughout scripture, Jesus uses cups as examples: he gave a cup of cold water, the disciples were encouraged to share in the cup of suffering, he passed the cup of the new covenant, and he asked God if the cup could pass at the Garden of Gethsemane. In light of Holy Week, stop and take a moment and reflect on the representative cups that Jesus partook in during the week. The Cup of Praise - Palm Sunday  Read John 12:12-13.  How did Jesus carry the cup of praise?  How do we participate in this cup today? The Cup of Betrayal  Read Luke 22:1-6, 21-23.  How did Jesus later respond to the cup of Betrayal?  How does this cup affect our spiritual lives today? The Cup of Remembrance - Maundy Thursday  Read Luke 22:15-20.  What was Jesus trying to convey when he passed the cup of Remembrance?  What do we remember today when we participate in it? The Empty Cup - Good Friday & Holy Saturday  Read Matthew 27:25-28, 45-51.  How was Christ's full love the means of emptying himself?  How do we join him in emptying ourselves today?  What happened on earth on Saturday while he lay in the grave? Cup of Resurrection - Easter Sunday  Read Mark 16:1-7.  How did this moment affect the women?  What did Christ change about the world when he passed us this cup? Adapted from Lilly Lewin's Article "Your Cup: A Prayer Tool for Holy Week."
