The Call of Abram Introduction We continue our studies in the book of Genesis by looking together at the promise which God makes to the Patriarchs – Abram, Isaac and Jacob. This promise comes against the backdrop of Genesis 1-11 and provides, as we shall see, the solution to the problem facing humankind. Humankind, created in God’s image as His representative rulers, has turned its back on God – with devastating consequences. Instead of enjoying blessing and rest within the presence of God, they have been scattered under God’s judgement and are restless wanderers upon the earth. Seeking to make a name for themselves, they have turned their backs upon God who alone can give true greatness. With the rebellion at Babel, it appears as if the whole world has gone astray and that God’s good purposes have finally come to nothing. It is within this context and against this background that we are presented with the account of Shem and of Terah (Genesis 11vs10-32) and meet Abram who is destined to play a vital role in the fulfilment of God’s purposes for His people. Standing in the line of Shem, we have good hopes that Abram may well inherit the blessing pronounced by Noah (Genesis 9vs26). At the same time the events at Babel make it absolutely clear that this will only be the case if Abram, like Noah, finds grace in God’s sight. This is precisely what happens in the ‘call of Abram’ (Genesis 12vs1-9) At the end of this study you should be able to answer the following questions:  How does the LORD ensure that His purposes for a lost world are brought to fulfilment?  What is the correct response to the LORD who promises? Read Genesis 11vs10-12vs9

Observe: 1. The place of Abram as part of the family line of Shem 2. The detailed description of Abram’s extended family
