The Gospel According To LUKE Chapter 22

“THE PASSOVER / THE LORD’S SUPPER” I) HIS PASSOVER! (v1-13) (v1) Feast of Unleavened Bread / The Passover (Exodus 12:1-36) (Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. References to the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread include Exodus 12:1-13:16; 23:15; 34:18-20,25; Leviticus 23:4-14; Numbers 28:16-25; Deuteronomy 16:1-8; Joshua 4:19-23; 5:10-12; and 2 Chronicles 30:2,3,13,15. The Passover was the first of the three great festivals of the Hebrew people. It referred to the sacrifice of a lamb in Egypt when the people of Israel were slaves. The Hebrews smeared the blood of the lamb on their doorposts as a signal to God that He should "pass over" their houses when He destroyed all the firstborn of Egypt to persuade Pharaoh to let His people go. Passover was observed on the 14th day of the first month, Abib, with the service beginning in the evening (Leviticus 23:6). It was on the evening of this day that Israel left Egypt. Passover commemorated this departure from Egypt in haste. Unleavened bread was used in the celebration because this showed that the people had no time to put leaven in their bread as they ate their final meal as slaves in Egypt. Several regulations were given concerning the observance of Passover. Passover was to be observed "in the place which the Lord your God will choose." This implied the sanctuary of the tabernacle or the Temple in Jerusalem. In New Testament times, Passover became a pilgrim festival. Large numbers gathered in Jerusalem to observe this annual celebration. Jesus was crucified in the city during one of these Passover celebrations. He and His disciples ate a Passover meal together on the eve of His death. Like the blood of the lamb which saved the Hebrew people from destruction in Egypt, His blood, as the ultimate Passover sacrifice, redeems us from the power of sin and death. (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary))

(Christ in the Passover (5 points): (1) The lamb must be without blemish and to test this it was kept for four days (Ex. 12:5-6). So our Lord’s public life, under hostile scrutiny, was the testing which proved His holiness. (2) The lamb thus tested must be killed (Ex. 12:6; Jn. 12:24; Heb. 9:22). (3) The blood must be applied (Ex. 12:7). This answers to appropriation by personal faith, and refutes universalism (read Jn. 3:36). (4) The blood thus applied of itself, without anything in addition, constituted a perfect protection from judgment (Ex. 12:13; Heb. 10:10, 14; 1 Jn. 1:7). And (5) the feast typified Christ the Bread of life, answering to the memorial supper (Mt. 26:26-28; 1 Cor. 11:23-26). To observe the feast was a duty and privilege but not a condition of safety. The believer in Christ is saved by the blood of “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Rev. 13:8), and is strengthened daily by feasting on the Word—the living Word, Christ, and the written Word, the Scriptures. – C.I. Scofield) (v3) Satan enters Judas – The Bible declares that Satan is a liar, a thief, and a murderer (John 8:44). Judas chose to trust in himself and not Christ. Judas loved money and not God. Judas brought death, not life. His heart, soul and body were ripe and ready for the devil to do his dirty deed. (v7-13) “Prepare the house—make ready the upper room” – Our preparation is personal – to know Him, to love Him, to live for Him and to be ready for His return! II) HIS DESIRE! (v14-18) (v14-15) “with desire I have desired” – Gk. epithumia – a longing; Gk. epithumeo – to set the heart upon. (v16-18) I will not eat or drink again until the Kingdom of God is fulfilled and comes – When is again? Revelation 19:7-10 - Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to

me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!'" And he said to me, "These are the true sayings of God." And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." III) HIS NEW COVENANT! (v19-23) > His Body - John 15:13-15 - Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. > His Blood - Leviticus 17:11-12 - For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.' Therefore I said to the children of Israel, 'No one among you shall eat blood, nor shall any stranger who dwells among you eat blood.' New Testament - Romans 3:23-26 - For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 5:9-10 - Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Ephesians 1:7-12 - In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth — in Him. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. Colossians 1:19-20 - For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. > His New Covenant – Hebrews 8:8 – chapter 9 – “Seven Benefits of the New Covenant”: (1) It’s more excellent (Heb. 8:6) than the Mosaic Covenant (Ex. 19:5), not morally but efficaciously (Heb. 7;19; Ro. 8:3-4). (2) It is established upon “better” (i.e. unconditional) promises. In the Mosaic covenant God said, “if you will indeed obey” (Ex. 19:5); in the New Covenant He says, “I will” (Heb. 8:10,12). (3) Under the Mosaic Covenant obedience sprany from fear (2:2; 12:25-27); under the New it issues from a willing heart and mind (8:10). (4) The New Covenant secures the personal revelation of the Lord to every believer (v11). (5) It assures the complete oblivion of sins. (6) It rests upon an accomplished redemption (Mt. 26:27-28; 1 Cor. 11:25; Heb. 9:11-12, 1823). And (7) it secures the perpetuity, future conversion, and blessing of a repentant Israel, with whom the New Covenant will yet be ratified (Jer. 31:31-40; Zech. 12:8; 2 Sam. 7:8-17). IV) HIS SERVICE (v24-27) - Observe Philippians 2:1- Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. V) HIS INTERCESSORY PRAYER (v28-38) - Satan wants to sift us like wheat, but Jesus has prayed for us - John 17:9-23

VI) HIS WILL BE DONE (v39-46) - Prayer protects us from falling to temptation, Jesus said, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” VII) HIS COMPASSION (v47-62) - Peter denied the Lord three times, but Jesus looked at with eyes of compassion, love and forgiveness. Peter then wept bitterly, Psalms 51:17 says, “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Peter was broken of pride and arrogance and reshaped in humility and love, may we be the same. VIII) HIS TESTIMONY (v63-71) (v69-70) Jesus said, “Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” Then in verse 70, “You rightly say that I am.”
