The Marks of a Disciple How to Make Your Life Matter Acts 20:17-38 Dr. Stephen Rummage, Senior Pastor Bell Shoals Baptist Church March 6, 2016 Every life matters to God, but not every life matters for God. Our Mission: Follow Jesus. Love People. Make Disciples. Our Marks: Our marks are the attributes or characteristics of an individual’s life that reflect accomplishment of our mission. They provide the standard by which our mission can be measured with respect to an individual’s spiritual growth through the ministry of Bell Shoals. The Seven Marks of a Disciple: 1. Pursues a growing relationship with Jesus. 2. Strives to become more like Jesus. 3. Participates in relational discipleship. 4. Gathers with the church to worship. 5. Exercises spiritual gifts to serve others. 6. Gives sacrificially and generously. 7. Lives missionally. Acts 20:36 (ESV) And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. Acts 20:37 (ESV) And there was much weeping on the part of all; they embraced Paul and kissed him, Acts 20:38 (ESV) being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship. Five principles for making your life matter: 1. Leave a Legacy of Service Acts 20:17 (ESV) Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him.

Acts 20:18 (ESV) And when they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, Acts 20:19 (ESV) serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; Acts 20:20 (ESV) how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, Acts 20:21 (ESV) testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Heart Attitude: My life finds its greatest meaning when I live to serve, not to be served. 2. Have a Heart of Surrender Acts 20:22 (ESV) And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, Acts 20:23 (ESV) except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. Acts 20:24 (ESV) But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Heart Attitude: My life finds its greatest meaning when I give myself away. 3. Tell the Truth of Scripture Acts 20:25 (ESV) And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. Acts 20:26 (ESV) Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, Acts 20:27 (ESV) for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

Heart Attitude: My life finds its greatest meaning when I stand for God’s truth. 4. Cultivate a Concern for Souls

Acts 20:28 (ESV) Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which He obtained with his own blood. Acts 20:29 (ESV) I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; Acts 20:30 (ESV) and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Acts 20:31 (ESV) Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears.

Heart Attitude: My life finds its greatest meaning when I love people sacrificially. 5. Follow the Footsteps of the Savior Acts 20:32 (ESV) And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:33 (ESV) I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. Acts 20:34 (ESV) You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. Acts 20:35 (ESV) In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Heart Attitude: My life finds its greatest meaning when I follow Jesus. Giving Yourself to Jesus … 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Lord, I give You my time. Lord I give You my preferences. Lord, I give You my talents. Lord, I give You my possessions. Lord, I give You my gifts. Lord, I give You my future. Lord, I give You my heart.
