Courses, Curriculum, Instruction:
Before and After School Programs:
MECC uses the "Tools of the Mind" curriculum which is based on the educational theories of Lev Vygotsky. "Play is the central teaching tool of the curriculum which focuses on giving children the mental tools they need to develop academic and self-regulation skills (Bodrova & Leong, 1996)." Since all of the classrooms are multi-age, the curriculum allows each student to develop at his or her own pace while still being taught the needed skills to become life-long learners.
After school services are provided through a partnership with the community agency of the local YMCA. With help and support from our faculty, they have been able to support even our most challenging preschool students in a safe and loving setting.The program is housed in our preschool building which makes transitions easier for our young learners.

Staff and Professional Learning:
Our faculty and staff are committed to the ideals of a professional learning community: the belief that all children can learn the establishment of a collaborative environment, and a focus on results rather than intentions. Our intentions are always to engage every student in rigorous relevant learning experiences.
Student Supports and Services:
The Social Work Internship Program, staffed by a social work intern and supervised by the MECC Director, provides a variety of services within the school setting. Services include child and family counseling, as well as social skills groups. The Intern also has some oversight in providing the Bucket Filler Program, which is the Anti-Bullying program utilized at the Montrose Early Childhood Center.
Parent and Community Involvement:
The PTA provides donation of materials and resources, volunteerism, school beautification projects, cultural assemblies, and social events for our families. This year the PTA is sponsoring a parent education program called STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting.,) They also sponsored a program in collaboration with the Community Coalition on Race that was opened to all preschool parents from both communities.

School Narrative This section allows schools and districts to share highlights, achievements, and other important information about programs, activities, and services that are offered in their RZQZRUGV,IWKHUHDUHTXHVWLRQVDERXWWKHLQIRUPDWLRQSURYLGHGLQWKHQDUUDWLYHVHFWLRQSOHDVHFRQWDFW\RXUVFKRROGLUHFWO\ Essential to the success of the overall instructional program is the active involvement, close collaboration and support provided by the MECC families. The PTA diligently works with the school to enhance academic offerings for students through the donation of materials and resources, volunteerism, school beautification projects, cultural assemblies, and social events for our families. This year the PTA is sponsoring a parent education program called STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting.,) which will run a seven-week session during the school year and facilitated by our clinical staff. They also sponsored a program in collaboration with the Community Coalition on Race that was opened to all preschool parents from both communities. The topic was ³Speaking to your Preschooler about Race.´ Additionally, the PTA co-sponsored an evening on Gun Safety in the home with a local group of parent activists who promote gun safety practices in the home and of homes where young children visit. The MECC opens its doors to any family with a preschooler with many of our events helping to make it a hub for spreading good educational and sharing practice with our whole community.
