The Rock Road
September 2016
Grace to you and peace from our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Rev. Dick Elwood, Interim Rector
The Rev. Thomas Murray III, Associate Rector
Janet Boutin, Director, School
What an honor, what a privilege to, have been asked by the Diocesan Bishop to serve as the Interim Rector of St. Peter’s. Jane and I have known of St. Peter’s over the years and especially since we came to St. Barnabas, Fredricksburg in 2005. St. Peter’s has been described as a strong parish with faithful clergy and dedicated lay leadership. We have known Stockton and Tom since the time when both of them served in the Diocese of Texas. They have been friends over the years, I appreciate the work they have done (and continue to do). I have recently been on the staff of St. Francis in Houston for the last four years and have loved my work there . However, I have driven back and forth each week – the commute to Kerrville and back will be as if it is nothing! I have had a number of conversations with Barbara Cordova, Sr. Warden and Chrisie Jennings, Parish Administrator. Also, Jane and I attended the Vestry meeting in June. As a result, I have some knowledge of present activities and various meetings and activities which are scheduled for the fall. I will be working full time and on call whenever there is a need. I take my role as pastor and servant very seriously and hope you will always feel free to call or visit me in my office. I am not the Rector and cannot be considered for that position. However, I have years of experience as Rector of several wonderful parishes and know I can keep activities and programs moving in the right direction. This is a time in the life of a healthy parish family to look at what has passed with great joy and thanksgiving an to anticipate with excitement all that lies ahead. Let us pray for the search committee that will soon be formed, for the search process, and for the new Rector who will be called.
Thank you for the honor of serving as the Interim Rector. Faithfully, Chrisie Jennings, Parish Administrator

We are live! Please check out our new & improved website at www.stpeterskerrville.com. This easy to navigate and more modern design is sure to meet some of your needs. For instance, you may now RSVP to events (after creating a log in), submit forms with the touch of a button (work order, altar flowers, burial planning info, and Tucker Hall inquiries). You will find audios of sermons, blogs (should any of our clergy, staff or leaders care to write one), and you can even subscribe to our newsletter. Moving forward, be sure to tell your group leader that you want to be added to your group online. This will allow your leader to email the group easily with updates on class or group content, time or meeting location, etc. Groups will even have their own email address (leaders, more on that later). Eventually, we hope to pair our website with some online giving options (this has yet to be determined). Please play around on the website and know this….it is not completely finished and still a work in progress, but I would like to know typos, etc. Thank you in advance! Chrisie Jennings, Parish Administrator

A WORD FROM FATHER TOM…. Living a Snapshot, Remembering the Big Picture
Have you ever downloaded a bunch of pictures from your digital camera or found an old roll of film, developed it, received it back and gone through them? At the beginning maybe you see a random set of pictures. Nothing belongs together or even makes any sense. We even may not remember taking them. After some time, we sort through them a collage forms and they begin to make sense. We may remember the event or location at which they were taken. Snapshots standing alone may not make much sense. When we begin to put them in the context of a bigger picture, understanding, acceptance, and meaning begin to emerge.
Day to day, chaotic life is living a snapshot. All of the turmoil and division in the world, our country and maybe even in our communities, just doesn’t make sense or seem fair. Complicated with our own circumstances sometimes life seems impossible. We may experience frustration, confusion and anger at everything including God. If we take the time to decompress from the pressures of our daily life situation, contemplate and pray we remember that we are part of a Big Picture and that God is our Photographer. Jesus is in the Snapshot, if you look really close. God is Omniscient, Omnipotent, and Omnipresent. Remember: Jeremiah 29:11 - “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Our Photographer knows. One of my favorite thoughts is this: when I don’t know, I know that He knows and I have to fly by the seat of the Holy Spirit’s pants. Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Our Photographer gives us all of our strength and Matthew 28:18-20 – “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” Our Photographer, our God has our Big Picture and is in our Snapshot as He is with us to the very end of the age.
BLESS !!! Fr. Tom III

ST. JEROME JOTS
ST. JEROME
PATRON OF LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS was born about 341 in Dalmatia. He was an accomplished Greek and Latin scholar when he was baptized at the age of 18 and became a monk in Aquiela. Ambitious and a hard worker, St. Jerome began building a library that became one of the most famous in the world, copying most of the books himself. He continued this practice while living as a hermit, learning several languages in order to translate the works. He continued his studying, teaching, and writing until his death in 420. He died in Bethlehem in the Church of the Nativity and was buried there. His body was later moved to the basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. His feast day is celebrated on September 30. Inspired by his example, those of us involved with the St. Jerome Library Guild and St. Peter's library, do our best to work toward accomplishing our mission "to learn more about God through spiritual literature in a congenial atmosphere.” What Jerome wanted, and what we want, is for you to be able to learn more about God through reading. We hope that Jerome would approve of our efforts. We are excited about plans for fall including a new schedule of having a business meeting every other month with a book review on the alternate months. That means we will have more time to devote to the review. We will meet 09/08,10/13,11/10, and we won't meet in December.
Youth group will resume meeting the 2nd Wednesdays of every month, beginning September 14th at 5:45PM in Tucker Hall. St. Peter’s Youth Group is for youth in 6th through 12th grade. The youth meet the second Wednesday of every month during the school year at 5:45 PM in Tucker Hall. The group meets with Linda Jordan, Director of Parish Life, and Rebekah Talarico, a former member of the youth group who volunteers as a co-leader for Youth Group. The middle and high school y outh meet at 5:45 PM for fellowship with dinner and a bible lesson. The group is able to catch up with each other’s lives, discuss future outreach projects and possible weekend trips to include mission work. Youth Group provides a safe place for each student to be open, honest, heard and accepted for who they are and know to their core that Jesus loves them, no matter what. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Jordan at 257-8162.

Board Games Needed! Schreiner University is looking for board games for their students in attempt to keep them “home” and off the roads. If you have any new or used board games that you would like to donate to a good cause, please bring them by the church office. The goal of preventing the tragedy of accidents by students seeking entertainment off-campus is a great one!

Please consider helping out with Habitat’s Wall-Raising! This home in particular is a joint effort between St. Peter’s and Habitat Kerr County, and will directly benefit a family in our community. The Wall Raising is on Saturday, Sept. 10th at 8:30AM at 133 Glen Court, in Kerrville. Even if you can’t swing a hammer, we still need you there! Donations and supplies are also welcome! If you cannot make the Wall-Raising on the 10th, construction will continue every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8AM (weather permitting). Please RSVP to the church office at (830)257-8162.
A Note from the Senior Warden I am sure you join me in thanking God for the lovely rain and cooler temperatures. The rains have brought more wild flowers into bloom and all the green fields make it seem like spring. It gives me hope that we will see an early Fall. It was wonderful to see so many of you on Father Dick Elwood’s first Sunday. His sermon spoke to me and gave me comfort in this time of change. I think that Dick and his wife Jane will guide us through this transition in the smoothest way possible. Once again, Brandy Weatherford prepared a magnificent brunch to celebrate Dick and Jane’s first Sunday. Thank you Brandy! Exciting news! Wednesday night suppers are coming back! Starting September 14, dinner will be served at 5:45 in Tucker Hall following the 5:15 Eucharist. I hope you will join us for good food and friendly fellowship. Please RSVP, so that we can plan enough food for everyone. Call 257-8162. Also starting on Wednesday September 14, at 3:00 PM!!! Senior game day. Some of you have shown an interest in meeting with others for an afternoon of dominoes, Rummikub, cards, and other games. Please RSVP by calling the church office at 257-8162 if you would like to join the fun. Coffee and tea will be served. Afterward, if you wish, you can attend Eucharist at 5:15, and supper at 5:45, and still get home before dark! Games will begin at 3:00 PM in the multipurpose room. Any questions? Call Linda Jordan at the church office. Speaking of change…We have a new web site! Chrisie Jennings has worked very hard to get our new, improved, up-to-date, user friendly web site up and running. The web site has a lot of information and interesting facts. Please explore at www.stpeterskerrville.com . Coming soon: a web site scavenger hunt. As we move forward as a church, we must remember that change is a process and not an event. The search for a new rector is a God-driven process that will take time and patience. Search Committee Chairman Mickey Horany and I have spent hours in prayer and meditation, opening our hearts and minds to God’s guidance. We take the responsibility of choosing a search committee very seriously. We hope that you will support the committee we choose, pray for the committee, and pray for the right person to be led to St. Peter’s. Until next month I’ll leave you with this: “Do not be anxious about anything, but by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God.” Philippians 4:6 Blessings, Barbara Cordova
