This Week In Business C&EN is now using the Standard & Poor's Index of stock prices to replace the index issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC composite index (based on 300 industrial stocks) was discontinued in June.

The Standard & Poor's index is a weekly index based on 425 industrial stocks. The number used by C&EN is the Standard & Poor's index calculated to the base used in compiling the C&EN index.
