THRIVING IN BABYLON PA R T 4 THE PEOPLE OF GOD
 AND THE MISSION OF GOD

The currency of our culture is kindness.

“Live an exemplary life among the unbelievers so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they will be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.” 1 PETER 1:12 (MSG)

The People of God and the Mission of God

THEME VERSE

“The people who know their God shall be strong, and do great exploits.” DANIEL 11:32

In the face of Babylonian culture, God will empower his people to: 1. Stand firm in their faith – “shall
be strong” 2. Take action on God’s behalf – “do
 great exploits”

KEY DEFINITIONS

What is Babylon?

“Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” G E N E S I S 1 1 : 4 ( N LT )

“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” GENESIS 11:6-7

Human betterment is often
 the enemy of God’s best.

What’s So Bad About Babel? Human disobedience, pride and independence from God.

Babylonian culture is humanistic at its core: It rejects God as its sole source of authority, then does what it deems right.

KEY DEFINITIONS

What is Mission? The exaltation of God’s glory throughout the earth.

“I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” EXODUS 9:16

“Send us around the world with the news of your saving power and your eternal plan for all mankind.” PSALM 67:2 (LB)

“I will send messengers to lands beyond the sea that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.” ISAIAH 66:19

The Missio Dei in Daniel “Therefore, I [Nebuchadnezzar] decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces… for no other God can save in this way.” DANIEL 3:29

The Missio Dei in Daniel “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.” DANIEL 6:26

The Mission of God and Me Missions is about ensuring that God’s glory is proclaimed in Babylon in my home, my office, my school, my city and around the world.

The Mission of God and Me I do mission by the way I live,
by the words I proclaim, and by the actions
I take to support the glory of God
 through the rule of God.

KEY DEFINITIONS

What is Thriving? To be the human conduit for the glory of God. “God will bless everyone who honors Him.” PSALM 115:13

THE DEFINING DECISION

Who will get the glory —God or me?

When I make God’s glory my life’s mission and message everything will else fall into place, and thriving will follow.

T H E W E S T M I N S T E R C AT E C H I S M

What is the
chief purpose of man? Man’s chief purpose is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in him. And I will be most satisfied in him when I am addicted to his glory.
