THUNDER BAY EXPERIENCE
2017
“Everyone loves to be near the water during the summer and there is so much to enjoy at our waterfront. Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant provide an amazing backdrop for community events.” – ASHLEY YOUNG, Cultural Development & Events Supervisor with the City of Thunder Bay
We’re proud of our waterfront and we love to share it with visitors—the natural beauty of our city combined with cultural events make for a true Thunder Bay experience. Here are some waterfront events you don’t want to miss! MOVIE NIGHTS ON THE WATERFRONT Friday Evenings (dates vary each year) Remember drive-in movie theatres? That feeling of cozying up to your sweetheart with a big box of popcorn to watch a flick under the stars, all in the comfort of your car? Movie Nights on the Waterfront is even better because you can lay out a blanket or your favourite festival chair, bring your favourite snacks, and enjoy a movie on the shore of the greatest lake. “People love the experience of a movie on the waterfront,” says Ashley Young, Cultural Development & Events Supervisor for the City of Thunder Bay. “They often recall memories of going to the drive-in when talking about how much they like it. The backdrop of the lake, the amenities at the festival area and Marina Park in general draw people to show up early before the films to hang out with their families and get first in line to the food vendors.” Two unique aspects of Movie Nights on the Waterfront are that the lineup is determined by public voting and it pairs local films with blockbusters. “We are committed to supporting and showcasing Thunder Bay’s talent...featuring a local short film at the start of each movie night is a great opportunity for our local filmmakers to reach audiences that they may not otherwise,” says Young.
© Alan Auld – Imagine Films
Movie Nights on the Waterfront kicks off in the spring with late night films and continues in August and September with a family series. Movies start just after dark and admission is free. thunderbay.ca/events
LIVE ON THE WATERFRONT Wednesday Evenings, July and August Back in 1910, the Daily News reported that “Dancing at Merry Night Park is now becoming the fashion—and to be out of fashion is to be out of the world.” Over a century later, the City of Thunder Bay is proud to continue the tradition of live music and dancing with their Wednesday evening concert series, Live on the Waterfront. Last year, Live on the Waterfront was revamped with a new name (it was previously named Summer in the Parks) and new look. Joel Plaskett Emergency headlined the first show of the series and set the tone for what would be a lively and eclectic mix of music and dance. “We are already exploring more national headlining acts, touring acts, and other forms of live entertainment to enhance the series even more for 2017,” says Ashley Young. In addition to live performances, the event features a variety of food vendors (everything from popcorn and perogies to pickerel tacos!), an artisan market with local artisans creating, displaying and selling art, children’s activities, free draws, and displays by community groups. There is also plenty to look at on Lake Superior as the Thunder Bay Yacht Club hosts a race series on Wednesday evenings. Young says attendance in 2016 increased by approximately 10,000 for the season—a sign that this summer tradition will continue for generations to come. thunderbay.ca/events

Last year the Thunder Bay Blues Festival celebrated its 15th anniversary with an all-Canadian line-up and record breaking attendance of just over 18,000 people. What’s in store for 2017? Well, without naming names, it’s safe to say that the festival will feature an all-star line-up of musicians playing blues and rock with a little alt-country and folk. The Thunder Bay Blues Festival, like most blues festivals, features a diversity of musicians, not just blues performers. “Every year has a different mix of performers,” says festival programmer, Bob Halvorsen, “and every year has something for everyone.” Since 2002, hundreds of bands from around the world have performed at the Blues Festival. Halvorsen recalls highlights, like the time Taj Mahal arrived at the festival in a cab
BREW HA! August 11-12 The inaugural Brew Ha! Craft Beer Festival was held in August 2015 and the event was an immediate success. It attracted 2500 people over three sold-out sessions which featured 13 breweries who served 48 varieties of beer. The event also featured food vendors, live music, and Tap Takeovers featuring craft brews at nearby pubs. Although organizers admitted they didn’t want to tamper too much with their successful recipe, they found a way to bring back a bigger and better event for the sophomore year. “The educational stage was a huge success,” says co-chair Jon Hendel, “each speaker filled the tent and captivated the audience with their knowledge of the industry.” Hendel says the organizers are planning to continue and expand this focus

from Duluth, Minnesota for his performance, and Burton Cummings put on a stellar performance on a picturesque summer evening. Halvorsen says that everyone loves the intimate setting at Prince Arthur’s Landing, “artists are always blown away.” On hot days in July, it’s refreshing to spend the afternoon on the waterfront, especially when winds are onshore. The Blues Fest’s food vendors are as diverse as the music—you’ll find everything from perogies to pad thai, and plenty of ice cold beer and spirits. Thunder Bay has a definite vibe during Blues Fest weekend. The music can be heard throughout the north end of the city and the party continues in the Waterfront District each night after the festival ends. tbayblues.ca
of the event in 2017, while introducing new yard games, and expanding breweries, food vendors, and their Tap Takeover partner pubs. Brew Ha! is proud to be a green event. Admission includes a collectable glass sample cup and free, staffed rinsing stations to encourage their use. Vendors must use recyclable products and, to cut down on paper waste, the event only uses e-tickets. Plus, they have a free bike valet with secure storage and all ticket holders can use Thunder Bay Transit for free to get to and from the event. Last summer, over 4000 people attended Brew Ha! and it’s safe to say this trend will continue. The event attracts people from across Canada and Minnesota/Wisconsin—it is truly a craft beer lovers dream come true. brewhafestival.com

GO SKATEBOARDING DAY JUNE 21 Prince Arthur’s Landing Skateboard/BMK Plaza
Each year on June 21, skateboarders around the world celebrate the spirit of skateboarding by blowing off all other obligations and make skateboarding their top priority. Go Skateboarding Day was founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies in 2004 as a day for skateboarders to have fun, raise awareness about the sport, reclaim their culture, and define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. Skateboarders in Thunder Bay unite to show their love and appreciation for skateboarding by holding a BBQ with prizes at the Prince Arthur’s Landing skateboard/BMX plaza. The event is hosted by Eclectic Skateboard Shop—a not-for-profit, skater owned and operated shop that invests all of their profits in the local skateboarding scene. @eclskate
SALMON DERBY
JULY 14-16 Prince Arthur’s Landing With the world’s largest freshwater lake on our doorstep and countless inland lakes in Northwest Ontario, Thunder Bay is a city of anglers. Those in search of the biggest fish in the biggest lake fish for Chinook Salmon, a species that was introduced to Lake Superior and now reproduces naturally. The Thunder Bay Salmon Association formed in 1987 to promote public awareness and the appreciation of the salmon species and salmon fishing—their main event is the annual Salmon Derby which attracts
upwards of 300 competitive and novice anglers each year. There are first, second, and third prizes of $3500, $1500, and $1000, plus many cash and merchandise prizes ranging in value from $250-1000 awarded through draws—everyone who enters a fish has a chance to win. The weigh-in location is at the Prince Arthur’s Landing marina beside the fish cleaning station. Last year’s winning fish weighed in at a whopping 6.9 kg (15.4 lbs), a big fish but no match for the 2012 winner that weighed in at 11.6 kg (25.5 lbs)—truly a King Salmon. thunderbaysalmonassociation.com
SUPERIOR THEATRE FESTIVAL JULY 27-30 Prince Arthur’s Landing & Other Venues
Last year marked Thunder Bay’s first ever Superior Theatre Festival which featured a variety of performances and programming, such as workshops, poetry readings, a Finnish breakfast with the artists and an interactive community-based installation. It was incredibly well-received in our community which comes as no surprise given our robust and eclectic theatre scene. The multi-faceted festival will showcase professional and emerging actors from the Thunder Bay area and from across Canada. With multiple venues both outdoor and indoor, the line-up of events is impressive, ranging from a launch party with live music to an outdoor theatre production at the breathtaking Spirit Garden located at Prince Arthur’s Landing. The festival will showcase original productions and events that will appeal to youth and adults alike. superiortheatrefestival.com

LET’S FACE IT, THUNDER BAY WINTERS ARE LONG, SO IT’S NOT A SURPRISE THAT WE PACK AS MANY EVENTS AS WE CAN INTO THE SUMMER. HERE’S A SELECTION OF WATERFRONT EVENTS THAT ARE FAMILY-FRIENDLY AND OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
FESTIVAL OF INDIA JULY 15, 4 PM Marina Park
India is a land of festivals. As an ethnically diverse country with rich history, there was a time when there was a festival every day of the year. Among these festivals, some are religious, some are based on seasons, while some are of national importance—all are celebrated with enthusiasm and colour. Thunder Bay’s inaugural Festival of India was held in 2010 and drew a crowd of 1500 people who enjoyed a free vegetarian feast including samosas, curries, naan bread, and sweets. The event also featured traditional live music, dancing, storytelling, informative and interactive exhibits, and children’s activities. Last year’s festival drew a crowd of 8000 making it one of the marquee events on Thunder Bay’s waterfront. Presented by the Vedic Cultural Centre, the event is free though donations are appreciated. indiafesttbay.com

Ski the 2017 Sleeping Giant Loppet
Thunder Bay, an equal number visit from other Ontario communities near and far, as well as from the United States and occasionally overseas. What makes the Sleeping Giant Loppet special? “It’s such a great family event,” says race coordinator Peter Gallagher. “There are few recreational events that a family can do together, whether you’re six or 86.” Indeed, one of the keys to the Loppet’s success is that it offers such a variety of races for every ability, from the 8 km “mini-loppet” to the challenging 50 km distances where elite athletes compete (see “Pick your distance” for more race details). “There’s a family from New Jersey who comes to do the Loppet every year—that’s their family reunion,” says Gallagher. Some skiers are there to hone their skills or try for a personal best, and Gallagher recalls a British skier who included the Loppet in her bucket list of endurance events around the world. Other skiers dress up in tutus, retro ski clothing or crazy headgear, and one year there were two university students who rigged up two sets of bindings on one pair of skis and competed in the 20 km race.

THUNDER BAY EXPERIENCE
2017
The site of the Loppet, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on the rugged Sibley Peninsula that juts into Lake Superior, is also an undeniable draw. A popular provincial park less than an hour’s drive east of Thunder Bay, it offers pristine trails sheltered from the wind by vast pine stands, breathtaking natural beauty and amenities like a visitor centre with washrooms and areas to warm up and socialize. “It’s just a fun adventure to go and ski in the park,” says Gallagher. And let’s talk about those trails: they’re groomed by master groomer Peter Crooks of Kamview Nordic Centre. “Peter has many,

many years of experience, and that’s the secret,” says Gallagher. “He knows about all the technical aspects—the moisture content of the air and snow, the temperature, all those little details that go into creating optimal trails. He groomed trails at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and picked up a whole lot of new tricks there for working with old snow conditions, warm weather conditions, you name it.” Despite the hustle and bustle, the Loppet runs smoothly. Out-of-towners should arrange their race kit pickup with organizers ahead of time, and there are comfy luxury coaches that shuttle from Thunder Bay out to the park and back again. In addition to the race prizes for best times, there are prizes for the fastest skier in various age categories, and there is a grand prize attendance draw for a one-year lease for a Nissan Rogue. Visit www.sleepinggiantloppet.ca for full details about the event, registration fees, fortieth anniversary celebrations, prizes and event hotels. Make 2017 your year to ski the Loppet!
BE R ACE-READY Before you ski the Loppet, call the trail hotline at (807) 285-0801 to get up-to-date info on the conditions. You can also get your skis professionally waxed, just right for the trail conditions, on the evenings leading up to the Loppet. Visit www.sleepinggiantloppet.ca/pre-event for details.
20 KM This gently rolling trail, arguably the most popular route at the Loppet, circles clockwise around picturesque Marie Louise Lake. It’s wide enough so you can ski with family and friends, and is groomed for both classic and free (skate) skiing. The race is timed and the top three male and female finishers receive an award. 35 KM FREE TECHNIQUE Great for intermediate skiers age 14 and over who want the challenge but not the entire distance of the 50 km trails, this route includes the wooded Burma and Pickerel Lake trails. Registration is limited, and participants are bused to the starting
line. This event is timed and all participants receive a chocolate medal. 50 KM FREE TECHNIQUE This top event is for competitive and recreational skiers alike (age 16 and up). Challenging and beautiful, it includes both a circuit of Mary Louise Lake, and the Burma and Pickerel Lake trails. There are six support stations along the way with water, sports drinks and snacks. The top three female and male finishers receive a cash prize ($1000, $500 and $250). 50 KM CLASSIC TECHNIQUE This timed race is skied on the same route as the 50 km Free, but the competitors are ranked separately. Open to skiers age 16 and up, it offers prizes to the top three male and female finishers.
© Daniel Ventrudo
The word “loppet” has Scandinavian origins and is sometimes translated as a “citizen’s race.” It refers to a mass-participation community cross country ski event which features both recreational and competitive events, including longer, marathon-length distances over varied terrain.

So, what’s a loppet?
8 KM FAMILY MINI-LOPPET Ideal for families, beginner skiers or those who just want to take part in the fun Loppet atmosphere, this in-and-out trail along the tree-lined Marie Louise Lake park roads is mostly flat and level. Chariots (pulks) are permitted so even the littlest participants can take part. Enjoy a snack and a drink at the midway checkpoint, then head back and cross the same finish line as the skiers in the longer races. And, everyone gets a chocolate medal!
50 KM SKIATHLON New in 2016 and returning in 2017, this fun timed race offers the best of both worlds, plus a chocolate medal. Ski classic for the first 22 km, then switch to skate ski equipment for the second part of the race. Race organizers take care of the equipment transportation.

CELEBRATING
Indigenous Culture & Tradition BY K AT LY ZUN | PHOTOS BY CHAD KIRVAN
THE DEEP, RHYTHMIC BEAT OF A DRUM ECHOES THROUGH THE GATHERING. THE DRUM GROUP BEGINS TO SING, CALLING DANCERS INTO THE SACRED CIRCLE. THE DANCERS ARE RESPLENDENT IN COLOURFUL REGALIA, ADORNED WITH FEATHERS, RIBBONS AND INTRICATE BEADWORK. IT IS A WARM, LATE SPRING DAY AND THE MOOD IS ONE OF SOLIDARITY AND KINSHIP AS PEOPLE GATHER TO CELEBR ATE LIFE, CULTURE AND TR ADITION. This is a scene from the Grand Entry of a Pow Wow. It is a sacred gathering of Indigenous peoples to honour the past, renew friendships and celebrate with music, dance, storytelling and delicious traditional food. Pow Wows are often held over two or three days in the spring to mark the end of winter and the rebirth of nature.

THUNDER BAY EXPERIENCE
2017
Thunder Bay has a vibrant Indigenous arts community, and the following events offer visitors some of the best ways to experience local Indigenous culture and tradition. FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION POW WOW Fort William First Nation is located just south of the city, a short drive along Highway 61 to Chippewa Road. The community hosts a Pow Wow each year around the July 1 long weekend on Anemki Wajiw (Mount McKay). The mountain, which overlooks Thunder Bay and Lake Superior, has long been used by the Ojibwe people for sacred ceremonies. For Fort William First Nation, the Pow Wow is a social gathering held to celebrate Ojibwe culture. It symbolizes the continuation of life and bringing the circle of people and
communities together. The two-day event features Grand Entry and Honour ceremonies, as well as a community feast for the elders, dancers, drummers and guests. You can expect to see several different types of dancing, including jingle and fancy shawl dancing, grass dancers, chicken dancers, and men’s and women’s traditional dance. Each dancer’s regalia are unique and carry deep personal significance. Jingle dancing is traditionally performed by women who wear dresses with rows of metal cones sewn onto the fabric that will “jingle” as the dancers move. The jingle dance is said to have originated in Northwestern Ontario at Whitefish Bay First Nation. The spiritual power of the dance comes from the cones, which sing to the spirits as the dancer moves to the drumbeat. It is performed for the health and wellbeing of the family and community. Women’s fancy shawl is an energetic dance featuring intricately decorated shawls; the chicken dance, normally performed by men, imitates the mating rituals of prairie birds. Grass dancers perform their smooth footwork in distinctive, brightly coloured outfits with long fringes that emulate prairie grasses.
ANISHINAWBE KEESHIGUN – FORT WILLIAM HISTORICAL PARK Each spring, Fort William Historical Park showcases Aboriginal traditions associated with the four seasons at the Anishinawbe Keeshigun festival. On June 10 and 11, 2017, visitors to the park are invited to learn about the cultural significance of various dance styles, try out traditional foods, create traditional crafts and participate in games and contests for prizes. Here you have the opportunity for some truly unique experiences (plucking quills from a porcupine, anyone?) and to step back in time to experience traditional food preparation, medicinal plant gathering and craftsmanship as it was done for hundreds of years. Watch as an artisan creates a pair of traditional snowshoes, moccasins or gauntlet mitts – essential attire in northern Ontario winters. Learn about the delicate art of quillwork, and even make your own talking feather, dream catcher or neck pouch. Sample traditional food like smoked fish, bannock bread and wild rice and see how they’re prepared. You can even make pemmican – a traditional style of meat preparation that involves dried meat pounded into a coarse powder and mixed with melted fat and local berries. If you’re feeling competitive, enter a bannock-making, spear hunting or wilderness survival contest and try your hand at atlatl, a dart-throwing challenge. There will also be dancing, drumming and a special Fort reenactment as members of the Northwest Company greet and welcome the Anishinaabe as they arrive by canoe on the Kaministiquia River.
Men performing a slower but powerful traditional dance Visit the Fort William Historical Park website (www.fwhp.ca) often wear elaborate regalia with a large, circular bustle of or call (807) 473-2344 for details, including admission fees eagle feathers. They may also carry traditional items that and camping options. represent their status as warriors or hunters. Women’s traditional dance involves quieter movements and softer footwork that speaks to their close connection to the earth. NATIONAL ABORIGINAL DAY Dancing goes on throughout the day, so take a break June 21 to refuel with bannock dogs or bannock burgers Prince Arthur’s (classic fare served on traditional bannock buns) Landing or, if you’re lucky, a dish with moose or deer meat. You can also purchase handmade jewelry, beautiful beadwork crafts and other creations from local vendors onsite. Visitors are encouraged to attend this free event, but should keep in mind that photography is not allowed during the Grand Entry and Honour songs. Photographers should also ask permission of the dancers before taking individual photos. For event details and dates for 2017, visit the Fort William First Nation website at www.fwfn.com.

En français, with pleasure! BY AUDRE Y DEBRUYNE | PHOTOS BY BRIAN BISHOP
Whether you are crossing Ontario going West, visiting a couple of friends or family in Northwest Ontario or stopping by in Thunder Bay for a weekend; you will have the opportunity to experience it in French! The Francophone community in Thunder Bay has always been here! For 400 years, there has been a French presence in Ontario and in 2015, the Club canadien-français de Thunder Bay and the Association des francophones du NordOuest de l’Ontario (AFNOO) put together an exhibition showcasing the long journey of European French-speaking explorers through the area, and their impact on the economy through the discovery of Silver Islet at Sleeping Giant. The exhibit is in two bilingual parts and a book made from the exhibits is available at all of the four Thunder Bay libraries. Today, seven organization offer a variety of services at the Centre francophone. Located on Van Norman Street, you can find lot of services in education, immigration, interpretation services, counselling and social activities, all in French. And if you are not Francophone, the community welcomes you for cultural activities and even to learn some French for beginners at Novocentre. The Centre is open to everybody! But that’s not all. If you are looking for services in French in NOW, AFNOO has developed an online directory of French-language services to promote bilingualism and the French language as an asset in business. The directory is frequently consulted by French-speaking 54

tourists and newcomers to Northwest Ontario. If your business or organization offers some or all of its services in French, it can be listed in the directory for free. The listing gives you and your service visibility and access to a growing and dynamic francophone community, both in Northwest Ontario and beyond. Check in online at the following link to access the directory and the many French services available in NOW http://afnoo.org/ services-en-francais/repertoire-services-en-francais. CELEBRATING FRENCH CULTURE? On September 25th, join the Francophone community and celebrate Franco-Ontarian Day through a variety of activities, such as concerts, forums, flag-raisings and parades. Green and white are the colours of the day in an echo of summer and winter (Ontario’s climate). The Franco-Ontarian flag also has a white lily that represents the Frenchspeaking community worldwide and a green trillium, the provincial flower of Ontario. Check out the Franco-Festival. Established in 2007, it is the largest Francophone festival in Nortwest Ontario. It’s a biannual celebration, held in Thunder Bay with music, arts, food and activities for the whole family! Look up activities all year round offered by Centre grandir en français (French-language daycare program), Novocentre (movies, yoga, French classes), Club canadien-français (concerts, slam poetry session, cuisine and arts workshops). There is always something happening in French, and you will always find information at Centre Francophone. Bon séjour à Thunder Bay! Bienvenue!

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Crossing the Border into Canada:
Land Ports of Entry
Both Canada Border Services and the U.S. Customs & Border Protection Agencies want you to have a good experience moving through the customs and border protection process. Learning about traveler entry forms, agricultural products allowed and prohibited, what items are dutiable, and other information about the process will help you move speedily through this process.
CROSSING THE CANADA-U.S. BORDER
WHAT CAN & CAN’T COME INTO CANADA
RESIDENTS RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES
All U.S. citizens aged 16 and older, entering Canada by air (including in-transit passengers who are transferring planes in the U.S.), land or water, must present one of the following documents: a passport or passport card; an Enhanced Driver’s License; or a Trusted Traveler Program Card (SENTRI, NEXUS or FAST Card). Travelers aged 15 and under require a birth certificate for land or sea travel and a passport for air travel. For current requirements go to: cic.gc.ca.
Residents of the United States who visit Canada are allowed to bring in a “reasonable” amount of personal goods duty free. The amount you bring should align with your length of stay.
Returning U.S. residents are eligible for $800 duty-free personal exemption every 31 days, having remained no less than 48 hours beyond the territorial limits of the United States except U.S. Virgin Islands, in a contiguous country which maintains free zone or port, has remained beyond the territorial limits of the United States not exceeding 24 hours. This exemption includes no more than 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars. Visit www.cbp.gov for more information.
If you are traveling with your own children under the age of 16 and your spouse, bring their birth certificates. If you are traveling with a child other than your own or without your spouse, have the child’s birth certificate along with a letter of permission, including name and contact information for that child’s parents/guardians or your spouse. Visitors from all other countries require a valid passport and, in some cases, a visitor’s visa.
There are limits for some of the regulated items: alcohol, tobacco and food products. What is and what is not allowed changes frequently, visit www.inspection.gc.ca for current information prior to your departure. Pets: Dogs and cats accompanying their owners from the U.S. must have current (within 36 months) rabies vaccination certificates. WE LIVE IN A PRETTY AMAZING PART OF THE WORLD. WE WANT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU.
WOODLAND CARIBOU PROVINCIAL PARK
NORTHWEST ONTARIO IS HOME TO SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST RENOWNED PARKS AND PROTECTED AREAS. Names like Sleeping Giant, Quetico, Wabakimi, and Woodland Caribou offer some of the best remote paddling experiences. The proposed Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area and Pukaskwa National Park celebrate Lake Superior and the stunning coastal environment. Discover its spectacular and storied coastline by car, motorcycle, kayak or sailing charter. You can explore quaint communities, play in the “extreme” or celebrate our Ahnisnabae culture in one of the many First Nations throughout the region.
Heading west of Thunder Bay into the Sunset Country Region, you really get an appreciation for the expansive geography and spectacular natural environment that is Northwest Ontario. Head up the winding Highway 71 that follows the shore of the magnificent Lake of the Woods to Kenora - a community full of culinary and cultural gems. Make sure you stop at Dryden’s Egli’s Sheep Farm to pick up something unique. If angling is your game, the highways that head north from Highway 17 lead you to communities that are gateways to some of North America’s best freshwater angling where you’ll catch big fish, make new friends and reconnect with your family and environment.

KENORA
Whether you have days or just a few hours to spare, here is a sampling of easy-to-follow road trips with some essential stops along the way. 1. ATIKOKAN The Town of Atikokan is located along the scenic Highway 11 just two hours west of Thunder Bay and an hour and a half east of Fort Frances. Atikokan is commonly known as the Canoeing Capital of Canada, but as a town offers much more.
5. IGNACE Ignace area has a variety of year-round outdoor adventures, historical and archaelogical sites and wilderness routes like the Turtle River White-Otter Provincial Park and the English River system.
2. DRYDEN Located on the Trans Canada highway midway between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dryden is where the rugged beauty of Northwest Ontario is at the doorstep with all the convenience of a larger center.
6. KENORA – LAKE OF THE WOODS Kenora is North America’s premier boating destination. We are the connection to Lake of the Woods and its 14522 islands. Through our events and amenities we celebrate our history and build our future. We love our lake; we are its stewards and we nurture its pristine environment.
3. FORT FRANCES Situated on the shores of Rainy Lake and the Rainy River, the “Fort” is a full-service community of approximately 8,000. Fort Frances is located across the international bridge from its sister city, International Falls, Minnesota making it the gateway to Northwest Ontario. 4. GREENSTONE Located along the TransCanada Highway 11 in the heart of Northern Ontario, Greenstone is an amalgamated municipality made up of 8 communities. Each is unique and has a story to tell but the one common denominator is fishing and hunting.

10. ROSSPORT Peacefully nestled on one of the most protected harbours on Lake Superior, the village overlooks the pristine Rossport Islands, part of a huge archipelago designated as Canada’s newest Marine Conservation Area. Take an epic sailing charter with Discovery Charters and tour the Rossport & Slate Islands on Lake Superior. 11. SIOUX LOOKOUT Halfway between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, north of the Trans-Canada Highway, Sioux Lookout sits nestled on the lakeshores of Pelican, Abram and Lac Seul with the rugged Canadian Shield as our backdrop. 12. SIOUX NARROWS / NESTOR FALLS The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is nestled on east shore of Lake of the Woods, and boasts a wide range of resorts, lodges and campgrounds. We have two Provincial Parks, gift shops, fine dining, a golf course, and an extensive network of hiking trails and canoe routes. 13. TERRACE BAY Terrace Bay is located at the top of Lake Superior along the Trans-Canada Highway. This beautiful community has a proud forestry history and its special relationship to the world’s largest fresh water lake is why it is known as Lake Superior’s Playground.
