WHAT:

Finding God’s Presence in Wind River, WY This past July I traveled to Wind River, Wyoming with the high school youth group to serve, give, worship, invite and grow. We painted houses for residents living on the reservation, assisted the children programs there, chopped wood for a local resident and visited the local retirement home. I personally saw God at work while at my work site. I was painting one of the few two-story houses from blue to a bright purple. Everyone was willing to do anything that would get us closer to the ending result. The six puppies that were at the house were a lot of fun to play with as well. It also showed when we all just relaxed and talked after our work day. To see these young adults understand that they could do something as small as giving a child a “piggy back” ride and it would change that child’s day, was a huge blessing for me. I had the opportunity to have a conversation with an 18-year old girl, who was just like me. We both liked country music, swimming and hanging out with friends. It seemed so surreal to know that we are the same but we live differently. Going on mission trips, you are told to bring God’s grace and love to those we are serving. One thing that really stuck out to me was that we were constantly told that God’s presence was already there. That we didn’t need to bring his glory to the residents on the reservation, just to help in any way that we could. Leaving Wyoming, I have a better understanding of the culture and the people on the reservation.

Caring 3 Tips for Everyday

ADJUSTING TO CHANGE Part 2 of 4

Changing Schools Anxiety is very closely connected to excitement. It is excitement with an added ingredient of fear. As your child adjusts to a new school or new class, help them find things to focus on and talk about that are exciting and don’t involve fear. You may also help your child calm their fears by doing some of the following: ff Take a sneak peak—Set up a time to visit school and meet teachers prior to school beginning. It takes out the fear of the unknown. ff Talk about school by focusing on the positives—“Tell me two fun things that happened today.” This keeps them looking for the good to share about their day.

Life and Lattes: School Schedule Tuesdays beginning August 30 • 3:00–5:00 p.m. at Southwood. Come enjoy a coffee beverage, games, and fun! Youth Group—Back to School Bash Sunday, September 11 • 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Youth Room. We will be sharing a meal, introducing the year, meeting new people, and serving together! Please bring clothes and shoes that you are willing to get wet in!

ff Set them up for success—Get up early that morning. Have things ready and travel plans discussed ahead of time—anything to avoid unexpected bumps. We don't learn everything in school: we learn most of the important things in life just through living. Help reframe change as a normal, exciting part of life. Listen, Learn and Pray

Tuesday, September 6 • 6:30 p.m. • Fellowship Hall In an effort to grow in our understanding of some of the issues of our day, Southwood will host periodic sessions called: Listen, Learn, Pray. These special sessions feature community leaders speaking about issues confronting our culture, city, country and the world. It will be a time to LISTEN, to LEARN, and to PRAY as we grow in our understanding of the complexities and injustices many face in this world.

• Topic: Diversity, inclusion and race in our community. • Leader: T.J. McDowell, Associate Vice President at Nebraska Wesleyan University. T.J. has facilitated diversity and inclusion presentations to a variety of audiences since 1989. His presentations incorporate stories from his own life to engage and challenge participants’ prejudice and stereotypes about people who are different.
