TRANSFORMED Vocational Health Do Your Best As a writer, I work in a very public environment. Not only do I make some of my innermost thoughts available for public consumption, my professional successes and failures are also on display. Anyone can see what my books are ranked on Amazon, how many times my blog posts are shared on social media, or how many followers I have on Twitter or Instagram. This is hard for me, not only because my sales rank and social media popularity are accessible, but also because every other writer’s numbers are available to me as well. I tend to compare myself to others and deem myself a failure when I feel my numbers don’t measure up. Maybe you wrestle with envy and comparison as well. Perhaps you wonder why your peers seem to get the promotions, the accolades, the raises. Perhaps you, too, deem yourself a failure when you compare yourself to others. “Do your best in the job you received from the Master,” Paul advised the Colossians. “Do your very best.” (Colossians 4:17) I have this verse framed on the wall next to my desk, where I can read it multiple times a day. These words remind me that God has given me specific work to do, work he expects I will do to the very best of my ability, regardless of what those around me are doing. Paul’s words are a much-needed reminder that each of us has our own fields to plant and harvest. Our calling is to use the skills with which God has uniquely gifted us and to produce good fruit in the job he has given us to do.

Book Reading & Discussion: The Screwtape Letters
Tuesdays, November 8–February 28, 7–8 p.m., Group Room
• C.S. Lewis, the beloved author of The Chronicles of Narnia, entwined his storytelling and his Christian faith in the classic The Screwtape Letters. This collection presents the correspondence of Screwtape, a senior tempter, and Wormwood, his apprentice demon, as they plot how to twist the life of a gullible Christian to his damnation. Lewis explores doubt, temptation, faith, and Christ’s triumph through these approachable, insightful, and wryly humorous letters. A group will gather, read this book aloud, and discuss it. • Details: www.widesky.biz/screwtapeletters/ Contact David Frye, the group’s leader, at 402.450.2072 or [email protected]
