What really resonated with me in this week’s study was the thought that we should take care of our bodies so we can serve God better in this world. I had never thought about it before, but yes, when I am feeling well physically, I am able to get much more done. Plus, my attitude is better, and I’m more likely to serve others instead of thinking about myself. So, on those mornings when I feel like skipping my workout and sleeping in, what a great motivator to think that I will be able to better serve God if I do my workout! So—off to boot camp!

Ongoing Community Missions

The Physical Health section of Transformed has given me a whole new way to look at what I do to take care of my body. Yes, I had heard that “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” and that we should “honor God with our body.” But it was one of those things that I never really thought about.

Saturday, October 8 • 9:15–11:15 a.m. On the second Saturday of each month, Southwood volunteers deliver food boxes to Meals on Wheels clients. Delivery begins at 9:15 a.m. and takes less than 2 hours. Volunteers are scheduled once every 2 months. Interested? Contact Malissa at mpauling@ southwoodlutheran.org to be added to the schedule.

For me, being a numbers person, this was the perfect tool. I lost the desired weight and have kept it off. I love my early morning workouts, and I have much better portion control when I eat. (But hey— everything in moderation, right? I still enjoy pizza, beer, and sweets!)

The next session of Listen, Learn, Pray will be a time to review the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s statement on the Death Penalty. As Nebraskans prepare to vote on this issue, members have asked what the church believes. Join Dan Klaus, Attorney at Law, as well as President of Southwood’s Church Council on Monday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Shortly after our trip, Becca (our daughter) showed me an app she had recently downloaded—MyFitnessPal. You can track everything you eat, and your exercise, and set goals for how much weight you want to lose each week, and what your desired weight is.

In an effort to grow in our understanding of some of the issues of our day, Southwood is hosting sessions called: Listen, Learn, Pray. These special sessions feature community leaders speaking about issues confronting our culture, city, country and the world. It will be a time to Listen, to Learn, and to Pray as we grow in our understanding of the complexities and injustices many face in this world.

A few years ago, a picture that Don took of me on vacation showed me that I was really overweight. What an eye-opener! I had always exercised, but always ate too much.

Do you have questions about your grief: Is this normal? Are you hurting? Exhausted? Overwhelmed? Do you wonder how you can possibly go on? Maybe you feel this way, but you pretend you’re okay. Be assured these are common responses to grief. Attend this GriefShare session to discuss what typical grief is and how turning to God will help, even when you wonder if God is really here. All are welcome!
