February Trinity Tidings Newsletter PASTOR’S PEN Greetings Dear Friends in Christ! February is NOT the time of year we expect to see rainbows. Maybe a few hearts thrown around for Valentine’s Day; otherwise February is still in the clutches of winter. Yet this month we will focus our attention on the rainbow. A sign of sin and a symbol of salvation! Just as February has us thinking about the hopes of spring, so the darkness of Lent will have us thinking about the hope of Easter. And so this February winter and spring, lent and Easter, will unveil a collision of despair and hope, and in that collision God will reveal His colorful salvation. Just after the flood destroyed the earth, the rainbow was placed in the sky by God as a sign of the covenant He now made with Noah. A covenant that God would not again deal with sin on earth through a destructive flood. For Noah and his family it was a reminder, a powerful reminder first (Continued on page 2)

of the flood – God’s punishment upon sin; and second God’s promise and deliverance – His grace upon mankind. This Lenten season you are invited to worship with us every Wednesday evening. Every participating family will receive a devotional cross to place prominently at home as a visual of the collision of sin and hope and a window into growing in the saving grace given to us in Jesus Christ. Each week an additional piece will be given out for families to add to their crosses in order to recreate their rainbow and meditate together on the work of Christ. The individual colors of our chosen rainbow will be explained in significance as a sign of sin and symbol of salvation. At the end of our Lenten journey, we will also publish a summary of all the colors for you to add to the collection as an ongoing devotional piece in your homes. Thank you to all who offered to help put this together and those who are working diligently to make these projects for all of Trinity’s families and our sanctuary. Please note, The traditional seven colors of the rainbow (ROYGBIV) have been modified for this Lenten Rainbow: Ash Wednesday – GRAY Midweek 2 – RED Midweek 3 – YELLOW Midweek 4 – GREEN Midweek 5 – BLUE Midweek 6 – PURPLE Maundy Thursday – WHITE Good Friday – BLACK Easter – GOLD

DCO CORNER Church of the Week Homeless Ministry Hosted by Trinity Feb. 12 – 18, 2018

This annual community outreach provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless. In addition to providing overnight shelter in our Fellowship Hall for 25-35 people each night, we will be preparing and serving a community meal for 100 people at Place of Hope every night at 5:00pm. Many volunteers are needed, to drive the bus, prepare & serve meals and snacks. Also, overnight volunteers (hosts/hostesses) are needed to serve 5 hour shifts for overnight security (Married couples, 2 men or 2 women). On Sunday January 21st many of you, with the gift of Giving, contributed to our door offering of $842. Thank-you for your generous response! In 1 Peter 4:10a it says that, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others.” Have you found ways to respond to God’s gift of salvation that He has given to you in Christ? This morning I was looking at the Church of the Week sign up poster in the narthex and it appears that the meals and snacks are getting covered by many volunteers! Thanks for serving those who are hungry! Our new members take a spiritual gift assessment and discover their top 3 gifts and then share them with me and I make suggestions on how to use their gifts to serve others. If they have the gifts of: Encouragement, Helps, Hospitality or Mercy I ask them to consider serving as an overnight volunteer for our Church of the Week program. We are still in need of overnight volunteers. Overnight volunteers sacrifice some sleep to serve the homeless with a ministry of their presence. Please consider the gifts God has given you. Could you use them to serve others as an overnight volunteer? The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”- Matthew 25:40 Please call me with any questions, 237-5507 - Craig Cooper, DCO

God’s Grub : Join us on Wednesdays at 5:00pm.

TRANSFER THE BLESSINGS Trinity’s Endowment Fund Trinity operates with several kinds of financial tools. Our yearly budget goes to support the day-to-day operations of Trinity. Special campaigns allow us to take on bigger things like major repairs, mortgage principal reduction, moderate capital improvements or equipment purchases. Restricted giving goes to support a single purpose and can only be used for that purpose such as the Memorial Fund. A more recent tool is our Endowment Fund.

Endowments, Memorials and Thank Offerings in January Virgil & Sue Braglman in memory of Ron Hoaglund Vera Forner in memory of Ed Pilantz Ellard & Edna Grubuski in memory of John Volkers and Ruth Volkers Donna Esselman in memory of Vivian Kelm Gordon and Delores Rehder in memory of Leatrice Ewers Friends of the Neils family in memory of Lu Neils Lori Wlaznak, Endowment in memory of Jean Skuza

Our Endowment Fund works with gifts that are designated beyond the day-to-day operation of the church. The Endowment Fund can be used to fund new initiatives both internally and externally.

FESTIVAL OF THE NATIVITIES

The key is that each year, only a little of the Endowment Fund is used, so the remainder is left to grow. Over time, as gifts are made to this fund and the principal grows, the Endowment Fund becomes a substantial way for the church to expand its mission in the world. For more details on how you can give above-andbeyond to the Endowment fund or specify the Endowment Fund in your will or estate plan, contact Pastor Hinz or any of the members of the Endowment Committee.

A small planning committee has been formed to explore the possibility of hosting a “Festival of the Nativities” at Trinity this December. The first step is to see if we could acquire enough nativity scenes to display. Our goal would be 100. Do you have a nativity set that you would donate to be shared at the festival? The festival would be open to the public and we would also invite families from neighborhoods around the church. Initial thoughts are the nativity display, a children’s area where they could “touch” a nativity and make a simple art project relating to the birth of Christ, music and possibly refreshments.

The distribution amount from the Transfer the Blessings account for 2017 is $4136.00. There is a "Proposal for Use of Endowment Funds" on the church website and there are also copies available in the church office. If you have any questions or wish more information feel free to contact one of the Transfer the Blessings committee members.

If you would be willing to “share” your nativity scene for a few days in December, please stop in the church office and sign up on the “Festival of the Nativities” form or call Joanne Keck 320-492-1896 or email at [email protected]. Thank you!

Schedules have changed so a different and perhaps smaller group meets during our Bible studies. Even the survey people were new and a bit shy to stop by!

Music and Worship Notes

“The Liturgical Colors of: Epiphany -- Transfiguration -- Ash Wednesday -- Lent” February is a busy month in the church year calendar. We finish up the Epiphany season when Jesus calls His disciples and completes His teaching and healing ministry leading to His mountain top Transfiguration experience with the chosen disciples. The 40-day Lenten journey begins with Ash Wednesday. There are a lot of visual cues to the changes taking place, many of which are color related. The paraments will change from green to white to black to purple. Epiphany's message of Christ's revelation to the Gentiles along with the season's traditional emphasis on extending Christ's kingdom through missions, calls for the use of green-the color symbolic of growth. Green is a neutral color, but there is nothing colorless about our need to grow and mature as disciples of Jesus Christ. The Transfiguration of our Lord calls for the use of white, the color of purity and completeness, our light and joy. White also symbolizes the robe of the glorified Christ, how appropriate! Ash Wednesday’s color changes to black. There's no mistaking the message that this sober color gives. Black is the absence of light. Ash Wednesday, calls for sober reflection on the cost of our redemption. Without Christ's sacrifice on the day the sky turned dark and hid the light of the sun, there would be no bright Light of Christ to live in, nor new life in Christ to enjoy. On the First Sunday in Lent, the color changes to purple. Purple, like black, is a penitential color, in contrast to a festive one. It is appropriately used during Lent. The forty days of Lent, including the six Sundays that fall during this season, use this deep, rich color which has come to represent somberness and solemnity, penitence, and prayer. Color will also play an important role in our Lenten Journey this year as we progress through a series called “Rainbows for Lent”. Colors will be used a bit differently in this case. The individual colors of the rainbow will signify the sins that Christ came to wash away, and the new covenant God has made to forgive our sins and bring us to heaven through Christ’s dying and rising. Be sure to come to our Wednesday Lenten Services and participate as we build our Rainbow for Lent. I would like to share a verse from one of our hymns for Transfiguration Sunday. It is verse four and it references a different mountain, taking us from Transfiguration to Good Friday. Take us to that other mountain Where we see You glorified, Where You shouted, “It is finished!” Where for all the world You died. Hear the stunned centurion: “Truly this was God’s own Son!” (Jesus, Take Us to the Mountain by Jaraslov J. Vajda) Come along on the journey from glorified to glorified as we behold our Lord in all His glory.
