Church of the Week Homeless Ministry

Hosted by Trinity Feb. 23 - Mar. 1, 2015

This annual community outreach provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless. In addition to providing overnight shelter in our Fellowship Hall for 25-35 people each night, we will be preparing and serving a community meal for 100 people at Place of Hope every night at 5:00pm. Many volunteers are needed; to drive the bus, prepare & serve meals and snacks. Also, hosts/hostesses are needed to serve 5 hour shifts for overnight security (Married couples, or 2 men or 2 women). This is a labor of love as our “Social Ministry” fund will be used to purchase all the food. It costs about $2 per plate for the ingredients for a meal. Would you consider helping to feed the hungry during our week? Would you consider feeding: 10 people = $20 20 people = $40 50 people = $100 100 people =$200 If you would like to donate checks can be made payable to Trinity Lutheran Church and in the memo please note: “Social Ministry”. This is a once a year opportunity for us to show God’s love to others in need just as God has shown His love to us in Christ. “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ - Matthew 25:35-36

Have you ever considered becoming a Pastor or Deaconess? If so, Rev. Daniel Eggold from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis would like to meet with you at Love of Christ Lutheran Church, 1971 Pinecone Rd. St. Cloud, on Tuesday, Feb. 17th between 4:00 and 8:00pm. Rev. Eggold is interested in meeting with prospective students of all ages, elementary school through adults. Appointments are individual, informal and family/friends are welcome to come with you. Appointments are not necessary but encouraged. If you are interested in scheduling a specific time, please contact Rev. Eggold at 314-505-7224 or [email protected]. Kelm & Reuter, P.A.

Worship and Music Notes “Epiphany into Lent” Fulfiller of the past and hope of things to be, We hail Thy body glorified and our redemption see. LSB 414:3 The season of Epiphany has taken us through the call of the disciples to the teaching ministry of Jesus as He demonstrates His authority to His glorious transfiguration. The Transfiguration of Our Lord is observed on Sunday, February 15. This will mark the end of the Epiphany season as we enter the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday on February 18. (6:00 PM Service with Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion) The penitential time of Lent lasts for 40 days prior to Easter, thus putting Ash Wednesday on the 18th. (If your math is not working out, remember that the Sundays are excluded, as they are still “little Easters” minus the alleluias.) Easter Sunday dates will vary from year to year. The date for Easter is determined by the Vernal Equinox. (The time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth and occurring about March 21) Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Full Moon (referred to as the Paschal Full Moon) after the Vernal Equinox. Date will vary from March 22 to April 25. The Scripture Readings for The First Sunday in Lent will deal with temptation and trust. Abraham is put to the test when he takes his son, Isaac, to Moriah. “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial” (James 1:12a). Jesus is led into the wilderness for forty days to be tempted by Satan. The Lord is able to resist the lures of the Devil as He reproaches him with the Word. “Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11) As we enter the penitential season of Lent, may we stand firm in the faith as we face temptation and turn to our Lord and His Word as we repent, resist sins and vices that Satan uses against us and amend our sinful lives. “Return to the LORD, your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.” Those of you in Adult Choir, we are resuming in February. Thank you in advance for your participation! Thank you to Sam and Amanda Kilpela and Ruth Immerfall for leading the contemporary music numerous times. We are still pursuing a Contemporary Music Leader to provide consistent leadership for the 10:30 Services. Thank you, also to the dedicated Hand Bell ringers. You are a joy to work with and make beautiful music together! Thank you also to the dedicated sound board volunteers. Not an easy task! Salt & Pepper Shakings On February 11th at 6:30 pm we are proud to host our second annual Trivia Night along with the Middle School Youth Group. We had a lot of fun with this last year! There will be several categories with prizes for each. Our “game show host” will again be Dan Ploof, he adds a lot of fun to the evening. We need teams of adults and youth of all ages. Please join us, all are welcome!

Coming to theaters this Valentine’s Day weekend, OLD FASHIONED is a faith-based love story about Clay, a reformed frat boy whose relationship with Christ impacts the way he looks at life and relationships; and Amber, a free-spirited woman who has felt the pain of dating relationships. Together, they attempt the impossible: an old-fashioned courtship in contemporary America!

“The film is a sharp contrast from Fifty Shades of Grey which is also due in theaters on Valentine’s Day. The primary difference between the two films lies in the God -honoring courtship found in OLD FASHIONED, which attempts to bring chivalry back to life.” Christian Post

“OLD FASHIONED is the kind of love story Hollywood has been lacking for decades. The film puts dating in its place and shows that old-fashioned courtship is the best way to discern a vocation to marriage. Bravo! And two thumbs way up!” Patrick Novecosky, Editor-in-Chief, Legatus magazine

“Like God’s Not Dead, OLD FASHIONED packs the potential and power to send shockwaves through the culture.”

“More Than Enough” Planned Giving Stories for Christian Stewards

No Ladies Coffee

Susan and Kevin bought a vacant lot along Lake Michigan many years ago. They had planned to build a second home so that their children could spend their summers along the lake. However, as time went on, Kevin's job kept him in town and the children grew up before Susan and Kevin had the financial resources to build on the land.

Ladies Supper Out: Monday, February 16 @ 6pm @ Jimmy’s Pour House in Sauk Rapids Men’s Supper Out: Monday, February 23rd @ 6:00pm @ Cowboy Jack’s

Kevin: Over the years, that lot increased in value. It now is worth much more than what we paid for it. We paid about $40,000 for the lakeside property and it is now worth almost $200,000. Susan: T he lot has gone up greatly in value, and with the children out of the house we were thinking of selling the property. We wanted to sell, but we also wanted to avoid paying so much in tax on the sale. We were thinking of making a gift of 25% of the property to our church. Kevin: I happened to be talking to a gift planner at a congregation luncheon. He mentioned that we could probably give about twice as much with almost the same cost if we gave 25% of the property (prior to the sale) rather than writing a check after the sale.

Upcoming Middle School Youth Events Don’t miss the MSYG Parent meeting Wednesday, Feb 4th in Fellowship Hall at 7:20pm. Wednesday, February 11, event with Salt & Pepper at 7:15-8pm.

After talking with their tax advisor, Kevin and Susan discovered that if they gave a 25% interest in the property to their church, they would receive two benefits. They would get an income tax deduction for the value of their gift plus save on capital gains tax on the 25% interest given away.

Saturday, February 21, 4-9pm Powder Ridge faith and Family Night.

Susan: T hat is what we decided to do. By giving a 25% interest in the property prior to the sale we saved the capital gains tax on that part. The deduction on that part offset a large portion of the tax on the $150,000 we received when the property actually sold. We are very pleased with the "double benefit from giving the property, and our favorite charity received $50,000, a very nice gift. Information and confidential consultation about whether tax benefits from a property gift to charity might be right for you can be had by contacting Mr. David Priebe, retired business attorney and Gift Planning Counselor for the MN North District, LCMS. Mr. Priebe's cell #: (612)508-4640.
