From the Pastor Advent/Christmas Worship As reported in last month's newsletter, our Midweek Advent worship on the Wednesdays of this month will focus on the theme of "Family Life." Drawing from the trials of those Scriptural families that were connected to the Christmas story, we'll learn how the birth of Jesus can bring lasting peace and joy into our busy and often broken families. Join us each Wednesday for God's Grub in the fellowship hall at 5:00 p.m. and worship at 6:00 p.m. What better time of year to grow in our family relationships! Please note: with Christmas Day falling on a Sunday this year, we will offer one service Christmas morning at 9:00 a.m. Holy Communion will be celebr ated. The 8:00 a.m. r adio br oadcast over WVAL that morning will be a pre-recorded Christmas Eve service from the day before.
Faith Promise Sunday On Sunday, December 11th, we will again have opportunity in our worship services to offer our personal stewardship commitments for the coming year. Faith Promise forms are included with this monthly newsletter and will also be available in church during the Sundays of December. As we consider God's "indescribable Gift" (1 Cor. 9:15) of His Son to us this Advent/Christmas season, we discover again something about the nature of our gifts. God doesn't bless us in a haphazard way. He's very loving, intentional and purposeful in the way He gives. Our response ought to be just as loving, intentional and purposeful in the execution of our stewardship. That includes prayerful planning - and yes, promising - how we intend to use His gifts of time, talent and treasure. An addition to our Faith Promises this year is the encouragement for all of us to have an estate plan that is included in a legal will, along with the challenge to include in such a will charitable gifts as a way of continuing our desire to provide for God's work beyond our lifetime. The recent revision and approval of Trinity's Endowment Fund Bylaws and the formation of an ongoing Endowment Committee will assist us in better understanding how these legacy gifts can be managed in such a way as to benefit God's church in the future, as well as bring tax advantages to the giver at the present time. As the year 2016 draws to a close, prayerfully consider God's past blessing and His future promises in your life. Please respond then by filling out the "Faith Promise for 2017" form. Retain the right portion of the form as an ongoing reminder and bring Table of Contents the left portion with you to church on the 11th. One of our church’s memorial accounts is called Social Ministry. I use these funds to assist people in need in our community. This time of year, the account is low. This ministry presents the opportunity for you to be involved with helping people in our community with basic needs. Some of the things we are able to do with your contributions are as follows: Keep our food shelf fully stocked Provide milk, eggs and meat to supplement items from our food shelf Help with gas for medical appointments and for job interviews Assistance with medical prescriptions Give out Target gift cards for personal hygiene products Provide bus cards for transportation to Worship for 5 Sundays Church of the Week Expenses. For example, reimbursing our members for some of the ingredients for the meals we provide and providing breakfast, paper products and milk for the week. We provide the evening meal for six nights for 100 people per night. Last year our expenses were $1,200.00. (Next year our week is Feb. 1319, 2017)
Please keep in mind that I never give anyone cash. I take time to verify the need and I offer spiritual council, prayer, Bibles and devotional books. If you would like to contribute to our Social Ministry account simply make checks out to: Trinity Lutheran Church and in the memo portion note that it is for: “Social Ministry”. You can drop off checks in the church office or in the offering plate on Sunday mornings. Also, if your church group (i.e. LWML, Sewing Guild, Youth Group, Hospitality, Bible Study Group, etc.) would like to contribute please let me or Joanne Wilke in the office know.

Worship and Music Notes Advent Greetings Everyone! I was looking through a pile of emails that I've saved from years gone by (back when I used to print off all of the "good" ones before I would delete them) and I came across this story. Since Prince of Peace's Christmas musical is coming up soon, I thought this was a perfect read for me to share with you. Enjoy! “The 'W' in Christmas" Last December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful one. I cut back on nonessential obligations-extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending. Yet, I still found myself exhausted and unable to appreciate the precious family moments and, of course, the true meaning of Christmas. My son, Nicholas, was in Kindergarten that year and it was an exciting season for a six year old. For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant." I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher. She assured me there would be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise. The morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat crosslegged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song. Because most public school systems had long stopped referring to the holiday as "Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun songs about reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. So when my son's class stood to sing, "Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title. Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters and bright hats upon their heads. Those in the front row--center stage--held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love." The performance was going smoothly until suddenly, we noticed a small, quiet girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down--totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W". The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W". Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was purpose for our festivities. For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear: "C-H-R-I-S-T-W-A-S-L-O-V-E" Please join POP's K-8 students for their Christmas musical entitled, "A Play in a Manger" to be held at Love of Christ Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Dec. 20th at 7:00 p.m. If you cannot come that night because of other commitments, we will gladly welcome you at our final dress rehearsal the morning of Dec. 20th at 10:00 a.m. :) :) "The students will share that the heart of the Christmas story is "CHRIST WAS LOVE." Hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. The time of year to reach out and help others through the Angel Tree Program is upon us once again. Our Church is pleased to continue to participate in Angel Tree, a Prison Fellowship program that provides a pathway for incarcerated parents to restore and strengthen relationships with their children. Volunteers like you help make this possible by giving Christmas gifts and the Good News of God’s love to children in the name of mother’s and father’s behind bars. Angle Tree Sunday will be on Sunday, November 27th, names of children and gift ideas will be available in the Narthex on the tree. Please be sure to sign your Gift tag name out at the desk that will be located next to the tree. Gifts will need to be returned wrapped and under the tree by Sunday, December 11th. Saturday, December 10, 9:00 – 10:30am, in the Fellowship Hall. Cookies must be homemade. Sign-up by Dec. 4th. If possible, give cookie name you will be bringing to avoid too many duplicate kinds. Bring 10 dozen (all the same kind). Please bring your cookies in a large container; plates and plastic bags will be provided. Coffee, juice and rolls will be served. The weekend of November 5th the LWML fall workshop helped LSF in many ways! They donated 24 full-sized candy bars; 22 boxes of kleenix tissue; 1500 luncheon napkins; 326 bowls; 531 plates; 138 dessert plates, 4 bottles of soap; 1 comet cleanser; 1 pkg garbage bags; 1 pack freezer bags; 169 cups; 29 rolls paper towels; 89 rolls toilet paper; 32 sets of plastic ware; huge bag of forks, huge bag of spoons; 1 bag clear set of 8 silverware; 13 NIV Bibles; a $50 Cashwise gift card and many all occasion cards. The Churches of LWML members are from-Faith, Holy Cross, Immanuel, Redeemer, St. John’s, St. Paul’s, and Trinity CL. Two students (survey attendees) wanted to volunteer time here so they worked to organize and put everything in a proper place for usage. Awesome! Also we give thanks to Trinity Youth, Terry Kurash and Lucie Schwartzkopf for spending an evening with the LSF College students in Bible study and in sharing information at the LSF house. LUTHERAN ISLAND CAMP Christmas Dinners are now all set. We have listed them below:
Trinity High School Youth Group 9th-12th grade High School Youth Group has been crazy fun and busy this fall. We were able to partner up with Holy Cross, Redeemer youth groups and the Lutheran Student Fellowship group from SCSU for a service project. We packaged meals for Kids Fighting Hunger. Teamwork, conversation, and learning about those less fortunate than us in Africa, helped us turn towards serving others. Many of us had a “bad hairnet” day. We also made a roadtrip to SCSU to share a meal and bible study with our friends from Lutheran Student Fellowship. The college students shared about the experience of being a Christian in the university environment. We are certainly blessed to have this resource in our immediate area. Former NFL player Matt Veldman was our guest speaker to a group of over 100 people in November. Matt led us in a discussion about temptation, obstacles, and trials. Since this was a family event, Matt spent about 45 minutes in bible study and Q & A. Great fun and wonderful questions from our younger attendees included, “What's a tight end?” and “Who is your favorite team?” Matt finished off the night with a session with the Sr. High group back in the youth room. This December we will join together for the Wednesday night Advent services, and then meeting afterwards in the youth room. We will take a break the last two weeks because of the holidays. Do You Like to Crochet or Knit? Do you have extra yarn to donate to a project? A small group of members is meeting on Tuesday after Bible Study, approximately from 11:30-1:30, to make simple prayer shawls. If you would like donate yarn, it needs to be at least 600 yards of the same color or complimentary colors to begin this project. Monetary donations are also welcome. If you have questions or interest in participating, contact Judy in the church office, 252-3670. Prayer shawls are to be given to members of any age, after surgery or during illness.

NEWS from Prince of Peace Lutheran School Our school will celebrate Christmas with our annual Christmas Musical on Tuesday, December 20th beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Love of Christ Lutheran Church. Please come and join us for an enjoyable and memorable evening all centered around the Babe of Bethlehem. + + + + + We are also pleased to share with you what we believe is a great improvement to our SCRIP Program. We now have on hand an inventory of the most popular gift cards so that you can purchase them directly from the school office (Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to Noon). We will also be rotating our inventory to our Association congregations on Sunday mornings. As a reminder, the SCRIP Program gives you the opportunity to make your normal purchases plus bless our school as the various stores return a portion from your purchase to the school as a rebate. For example, if you buy a $25 card for Mills Fleet Farm or for Panera Bread (just two of lots and lots of participating stores and restaurants), when you make purchases with your card those stores will return anywhere from 2 to 10% to Prince of Peace. It’s a win for you in that you get dollar for dollar what you paid for. And, it’s a win for POP in that we receive a generous rebate from the store as a result of you making your purchase through the SCRIP Program. One of our fellow Lutheran Schools, Zion in Alexandria, receives about $25,000 a year in rebates! This program can be a tremendous blessing to our school! Our thanks to the members of Redeemer Lutheran Church for making it possible for us to purchase an inventory of gift cards. Why not stop in and buy some SCRIP cards to use for your Christmas shopping? We have a wide variety covering a wide range of stores and restaurants.

(2 Cor. 8:5) be "first-fruit" - "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income." (1 Cor. 16:2) be based on a percentage in keeping with Malachi 3:10: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse . . . be a "step up" from my offering this year: "Grow in the grace of giving." (2 Cor. 8:7)
