Some of my most vivid childhood memories revolve around the season of Lent. Even now as I sing certain Lenten hymns, those hymns will trigger a memory and suddenly I will find myself back at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Prior Lake. It’s easy for me in my mind’s eye to see my Dad preaching (he was the Pastor at St. Paul’s for 35 years). He was a very good preacher! I can hear the congregation singing the hymn. I can see the faces of people that I grew up with and the faces of adults whom I respected. For these memories I am thankful! My encouragement to each of you as we begin yet another Lenten journey to the Cross of Jesus is to come to worship. Come to worship, not just to build some memories, but to build your faith! Set aside Wednesday nights in March and the first part of April for this. Come and join in worship as we look at both Jesus’ Seven Words from the Cross as well as the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It is the prayer of Pastor Paul and myself that our series of dialogue messages on the Seven Words and the Prodigal Son will be a tool the Lord uses to build up our faith in Christ and His saving work. Come and sing those beautiful and powerful Lenten hymn. Come a little earlier and enjoy Christian fellowship over a bowl of delicious soup. Yes, come and make some memories! Here is the schedule for our Lenten worship of the words of Jesus from the cross and the section of the Parable of the Prodigal Son we on which we will focus. Since the message format will be a dialogue, you may want to read each week’s pairing prior to the service – you may have a thought to share as well during the message! March 1 – Luke 23:34 and Luke 15:1-3 March 8 – Luke 23:43 and Luke 15:21-24 March 15 – John 19:26-27 and Luke 15:32 March 22 – Mark 15:34 and Luke 15:28-30 March 29 – John 19:28 and Luke 15:14 April 5 – John 19:30 and Luke 15:20 April 14 (Good Friday) – Luke 23:46 and Luke 15:18 On an entirely different note, I want to share with you that it is my plan to retire from the ministry at Trinity beginning July 1st. God has been good to me and blessed me with the opportunity to serve Him in the pastoral ministry for 40 years. The memories are countless as are the blessings I have received from God’s people over the years. But, as the truth is stated in Ecclesiastes 3, there is a “time and a season” for everything. And so, after much prayerful conversation, Karen and I have decided it is time for both of us to retire from full-time church work. We are looking forward to this new “time and season” in our lives and pray for God’s richest blessings to be upon Trinity moving forward.

In Christ, Pastor Dave

This week at our surveys one young man who has started coming to Bible study admitted he truly needs this Bible study and enjoys it very much. He said it is something that has helped him through some tough moments ever reminded of the Love and forgiveness he has in Christ. How awesome is that. He has not missed coming!. I was surprised also a new person stopped by our survey and he was looking over our kiosk where the surveys were and the candy was…he asked who we were, etc… so he did a survey and then took a candy and then took a picture of the little sign I have posted on the candy which says, “college is tough YOU NEED JESUS we’ll help. I thought that was very interesting. He did not say anything else. Thank you for your prayers, and continued support of the campus ministry, they continue to be felt in many ways. Worship and Music Notes Times of Prayer - Lenten Vespers

“O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.” Psalm 51:15 St. Paul admonished the Thessalonians to “pray without ceasing.” Prayer nurtures our relationship with God, in whom “we live and move and have our being.” Throughout the history of corporate worship, orderly efforts have been made to assist and encourage Christians to communion with God through prayer in a prescribed order throughout the day. These times originated through ancient Jewish models and came to be known as “Divine Office.” (From the Latin officium meaning service.) These ordered times of prayer were to facilitate a constant presence (or service) in God’s presence, fostering the uninterrupted relationship of which St. Paul writes. The apostles continued the Jewish practice of prayer at principal hours of the day: At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws. Psalm 119:62 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place…These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! Acts 2:1,15 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter

went up on the roof to pray. Acts 10:9 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon. Acts3:1 Our hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, has five services in the “Divine Office” section. During our midweek Lenten Services, we will use portions of the Vespers Service. (Taken from the Latin vesper meaning evening.) During this time of worship, we will participate in the liturgy of Vespers, learn from God’s Word in the Psalms and Gospels, sing praises to God in our hymnody, discover correlations between Jesus’ Words from the Cross and the Parable of the Prodigal, and commune with God in prayer. I hope you will participate in this ordered time for worship and fellowship.

Praise to You, O Christ, Lamb of our salvation. God’s Blessings to you in this season of LentDaniel Reineke, Traditional Music Director (320)656-0963 [email protected]

ARE YOU A MATH WIZ? Minnesota Math Corp and Minnesota Reading Corp place and train tutors to provide support for students that are struggling with their reading or math skills. For teachers, regularly delivering individualized, one-on-one instruction can be difficult, if not impossible. That is where their programs come into play. Since their tutors are focused solely on providing reading or math support, they can target instruction and dedicate the time needed for each student. Tutors commit to a year of AmeriCorps service, receive rigorous training and ongoing support throughout the year from literacy or math coaches, and use assessments to ensure their efforts produce the desired results - helping children achieve gradelevel reading or math proficiency. We have lined up a couple of young women whose lives have taken some very troubling turns and yet their spiritual lives have grown. If your life is falling apart or if you have a daughter who is struggling, this retreat will be uplifting and will give you some answers to the challenges they face. Register online today. As of right now the Polar Plunge is still on. Despite the very warm weather of this past week, we still are planning to have the Polar Plunge on March 4 and the Polar Plunge weekend on March 3-5. We may end up running into the water instead of jumping into a hole. Please call or register on-line.
