True Friendship Various Proverbs Paul McCartney stuck a nerve with this line from Eleanor Rigby – “All the lonely people. Where do they all come from?” It seems like the social media of our day has just created more and more lonely people – people who are longing for true friendships! And the Book of Proverbs tells us what a true friend looks like – and more importantly, instructs us on how each of us can be that kind of friend to another! Would you agree or disagree with this statement: The older we get the more difficult it is to find a really good friend. Explain your response. God has given many of us friends in our spouses. What makes this kind of friendship unique? Share ideas about how you cultivate this marital friendship. Why is it good, though, to develop friendships outside of marriage? On a 1‐10 scale where do you currently stand on having good, biblical friends? What factors are the most important for you in determining the quality of a friendship? Proverbs 16:28 – Why is honesty such an important ingredient in establishing and maintaining friendship. What happens if this ingredient is compromised? How can this happen? Proverbs 27:6 – What distinguishes a faithful wound from a destructive wound? What are some practical things that would need to be incorporated into a “faithful wound” encounter? Proverbs 17:17 & 18:24 – Faithfulness (especially during hardship) is a much needed component of a good friendship. How can mutually enduring hardship help forge a friendship? Can you share an experience where adversity helped strengthen your friendship? Proverbs 13:20 – The choice of our friends is so important! As parents, we know this with the friends our kids choose, but do we consider this when selecting and cultivating our adult friends? Does there come a time when a friend is no longer a good fit? How do we determine if this “friend” is no longer the best relationship? Proverbs 17:9 – Trustworthiness and confidentiality – they go together in a friendship. Why are both of these two components so important? What happens when these are compromised? Why are these two components so difficult to maintain? Friendships bloom best when watered regularly with affirmation and thankfulness. How might you express your appreciation to your friend(s) this week? Bottom Line. If we want to have a good biblical friend there’s only one way to get one: be one! In what specific way has this lesson challenged you to become a better friend? (What, when, with who, where?)
