Veronica Cavella Pedersen, L.Ac. Q.: Are there any statistics that show how effective Acupuncture actually is? I’ve seen several doctors, everyone from my family doctor to specialists in a few different fields, but I am not getting any better. How do I know that Acupuncture will help me? A.: Acupuncture is seldom sought as primary care in the United States. More often it is tried as a last resort, after trying everything else including Pain Management, so many people are skeptical that it would be effective for them, until they experience it for themselves. Perhaps a friend or family member has had good results and has recommended Acupuncture, or maybe a doctor has referred you, but still you have some doubts, as do many people. You haven’t said what your condition is that has been so resistant to treatment so far, but let me provide some general information which may give you reassurance about the effectiveness of Acupuncture. A recent two-year study has just been released which surveyed a very large sampling of Acupuncture patients, 89,000 people over age 18, who had been treated by 6,000 Acupuncturists. Most of the patients in this survey were treated for musculoskeletal pain syndromes, with low back and neck pain as the top two conditions.
Hypnosis and its uses in the practice of hypnotherapy is a highly effective science in assisting people in the solving of their problems. It can be very beneficial in many cases as a

therapy in itself. It is a valuable adjunct in psychotherapy and psychiatry. Yet it is probably the lowest risk procedure available from the standpoint of contraindications. The subconscious mind receives and retains, neither accepting nor rejecting, all the messages we receive from our backgrounds, whether genetic, social, religious or experiential, plus all the conflicts (little or big) that enter our lives daily. When for whatever reason the conscious mind (which deals with everyday living, logic, reason, etc.) becomes overloaded, the subconscious prepares us for what the considered appropriate action (usually fight or flight). Many problems, habits, stress, anxieties, attitudes or apparent deficiencies can be traced to interpretations by the subconscious mind, which when understood by the conscious mind, can reduce or
resolve specific problems. The subconscious is also the seat of all memory. Traumatic events can be buried or suppressed in the subconscious. A major benefit of hypnotherapy is its ability to uncover and bring into the light of understanding the buried information or experience which may be the cause of a troublesome disorder. This was a government developed survey tool, administered by an accredited, third-party vendor, that shows what real Acupuncture patients have to say about their experience with their Acupuncturist. The study utilized the “Clinician & Group Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems” (CG-CAHPS®) survey developed by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). These “CHAPS” surveys were designed to provide a standardized tool to measure patients’ experiences with healthcare providers, health plans and health systems. Results are fed into a national database and compiled to help establish national benchmarks of patient satisfaction. The vast majority of these patients had been seen by at least two physicians and, like you, had sev-
eral therapies attempted before being referred for Acupuncture. Of the survey respondents, between 88%-93% said their acupuncturist was successful in addressing their primary complaint. These statistics are quite impressive, and while no one can guarantee results, I hope that perhaps this survey will encourage you to give Acupuncture a try.
