Unity (Concluded from Page 23) first undefeated regular season since 2007 and first Pocket Athletic conference championship title since 2014. If there was one game that truly embodied the Patriots’ teamfirst spirit, Wilkerson believes  it was the 14-12 victory in Week 4 at Jasper. “That whole weekend — just going up there Friday, waiting around for several hours and not playing, and then having to come back and play on Saturday in a hurricane,” Wilkerson said. “Dealing with those conditions made me feel really good about just being focused, disciplined

stuff up,” he said. “There’s really nothing to hold back. We tried to put in a few plays this week and open up the whole playbook. Trying to find something that’s working the best and stick with it.” And that seems to be the theme across the many football fields that dot the Hoosier state this week — there’s no time to be

scared, just do everything in your power to win one game. But in addition to playing fearlessly, Fuhs still wants his team to be disciplined and sound in its assignments. The Miners run a wing-T offense, which comes with a lot of motion and misdirection, so he needs the defenders to remain in control and not fall victim

to over pursuing the motion. “With their offense, they do a lot of pulling and misdirection with the football,” said Fuhs. “We really have to focus in with our keys and read them every single play.” Those will be the keys for the Rangers. Fuhs wants them to go into sectional with a clean mental slate and an attitude that they can

play fearlessly, yet disciplined. Their past performance doesn’t have to define them or their season, not if they keep at it and move forward against the Miners. “There’s no reason to hold anything back this week,” he said. “Win or go home. We’ll try to do anything and everything in our power to win the football game.”

and physical. I felt that we were well on our way to achieving that identity.” However, building toward a team-first type of attitude started months before Week 4 of the regular season. Schaad and fellow senior Ben Gordon can recall offseason workouts and how the team knew right away exactly what  it wanted to accomplish. “The offseason was very tough, but we fought through it all summer long,” Schaad said. “We worked hard, worked our butts off and just gave our all to show the tradition of Patriot football.” Gordon added: “We did a lot in our offseason workouts to just hold everyone accountable. We had to make sure we worked hard as a unit.” One of the aspects of the team-

first attitude the Patriots have shown that impressed Wilkerson the most was how several seniors had to change their roles to help fit the team and not one of them ever complained. Cade Jones, who threw for nearly 1,900 passing yards in two years as starting quarterback, transitioned to playing the running back position, where he has scored seven touchdowns this season on 71 carries. With the running back depth the Patriots have, Schaad has seen just limited opportunities to show his skill in varsity action. However, he’s taken the playing time he’s gotten and run with it — he has five touchdowns on 20 carries. Gordon, who spent the majority of his sophomore and junior years playing a mix of halfback and fullback, has now become

one of Heritage Hills’ starting offensive linemen and has fully embraced whatever comes with that role. “I felt like [the transition] was kind of easy, because when I played at fullback, I did a lot of blocking and I do a lot of blocking on the offense line as well,” Gordon said. “I just bought in to what coach was saying.” Wilkerson added: “It’s tough when a kid has played his whole career as a skill player, and then his senior year you tell him you’re moving him to an offensive line spot. He didn’t even bat an eye. When we asked him to do it, he did it.” Heritage Hills will open  its post-season Friday at home against Mount Vernon (5-4), a team the Patriots defeated 45-7 in the season opener on Aug. 17.

However, the Patriots know both teams will be completely different from what they saw in the initial meeting, and they know they’ll have to remain focused and united in order to win their first post-season game since 2014. “We have to come out just like we did against South Spencer [at the end of the season] and jump out from the get-go while being sound on offense, defense and special teams,” Wilkerson said. “Our style of offense doesn’t allow us to get behind by a lot, so we have to come out focused and play our game.” Schaad added: “I think we need to go into Friday’s game mentally focused and not think about the first win, because we’ve obviously both changed. We need to play to our potential and, hopefully, then we can come away with a win.”
