Update: New School Darryl Contrano Throws NoHitter To Triumph Over Animo Robinson By: Edward Camacho and Enrique Estrada

By: Damian Alvarez, Edward Camacho, and Jacob Rivas After sixteen years of students studying and learning in bungalows, construction for the new school campus is nearing the end! The school will be named after Dr. Richard A. Vladovic, who is the founder of Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy/ Middle college program. Vladovic negotiated a contract with Los Angeles Harbor College, and proposed the idea of construction of the new school. The school started construction in early 2017 and will be completed by June 2018. This campus will have two brand new building with a computer lab, meeting rooms, classrooms, and office space. After our students transition into the new buildings, the bungalows will be demolished and be replaced by a new field. The new building is exciting for many reasons. One reason is that we, the students and teachers, don't have to be on two tennis court. Another benefit that the school will offer is that students will have their own locker. This will contribute to solving the issue of students forgetting their books at home and freshman and sophomores won't have to keep bring their Physical Education clothes every other day. This will also be beneficial for athletes, allowing them to keep their uniforms and equipment in their lockers. Overall the new building, will have many benefits for the staff and students of Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy.

On Monday April 9th, 2018, Darryl Contrano threw a nohitter against Animo Jackie Robinson to win them the away conference game. Despite the temperature being in the mid90s, the Monarchs were still able to mercy rule Animo and win 11-0. Darryl Contrano had 13 strikeouts, striking almost everyone. One of the remaining players hit a sky-high pop fly to left field but was caught by Wylan Nogawa and the other player was thrown out at third by catcher, Enrique Estrada. On the offensive side, the Monarchs were able to put up 11 unanswered runs in 5 innings. With this victory, the Monarchs stay in 2nd place in CrosstownOcean League standings with a 2-1 record. They will have to beat Animo Venice on Monday April 16th, 2018 in order to move up to first place in Crosstown-Ocean League.

Monarch Softball Player of the Month By: Jayda Jamison Maya Guerrero is one of HTPA’s new freshman standouts, averaging multiple base hits and home-runs so far in her 2018 softball season. Not only is she a solid infielder, Maya is currently transitioning to the position of catcher. When asked about how being a catcher holds different responsibilities from being an infielder, she responded “there are so many scenarios and different situations that I need to remember, as well as being more of a leader on the field.” This year the Lady Monarchs have a new coaching staff, as Jessica Cotton has taken on the role of Varsity Head Coach. “I love Coach Cotton! She is the mixture of serious and competitive, but she’s also funny at the same time. She played softball almost her whole life, so she definitely knows what she’s talking about and I trust her." Maya started playing softball ever since she was three years old, and has been playing for a total of twelve years now. She also had a lot to say about her intense love and passion for the sport. “With softball I love how I can see it as my “happy place”, if things aren’t going well at school or at home. It also allows me to learn life lessons and gives me the chance to play and interact with other girls who love the sport too.” Her ultimate goal is to one day play college softball for Iowa University and to see her hard work pay off towards the sport she has played her whole life. Maya Guerrero has definitely made her mark on and off the diamond, and we can’t wait to see what challenge she’s going to conquer next.

Basketball When comparing the first round of the playoffs and the overall success of many teams, it seems apparent that the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Golden State Warriors will obtain the most success during this 2018 final playoff rounds. As far as round one, the Houston Rockets have a 95.20% chance of taking home the championship and looking at the overall season, the Houston Rockets stand at a 23% chance of taking home the championship. Golden State Warriors have an overall of a 33% chance of winning and a 78.80% chance of winning when looking at the first round. Lastly, the Cleveland Cavaliers have a 92.20% chance of winning while looking at the first round, meanwhile, their overall season percentage of winning is a 10%. While soon entering the next round, these three teams have equal opportunity meaning they have to work exceptionally hard to obtain the championship because it won't come easily. Every rationale basketball fan is pretty confident that Golden State and Cleveland will meet for a fourth consecutive year in the finals. Who will win? That is for YOU to decide!

Hockey The 2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs began the night of April 11th with the opening matchups of the first round. The 16 teams in the postseason field are hoping to make a run through their respective conference and into the final, all with the main goal of hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup at the conclusion of the journey. The Nashville Predators, last year’s runner up, are surprisingly the oddson favorite this year. Nashville came close last year despite its status as playoff format in the Western Conference and worst overall seed (No.16) in the entire field. The Penguins who are three time Stanley Cup champions are not looking too good. Their odds of three-peating aren’t all that great. Who Stanley Cup this year? Will it be the back-to-back-to-back champs or will it be switched up this year? And again, that is for YOU to decide!

On the Courts Cultural Fair

By Angelena Escobar and Samantha Sanchez On Friday, April 13th, 2018, Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy held its annual Cultural Fair. The purpose of the cultural fair is to expose students to a variety of cultures. Typically, clubs that were centered around a certain ethnicity would participate and have a booth at the fair. Each booth, representing a different culture would teach others about food, clothing and traditions unique to their culture. Some clubs went as far as creating a cultural-dance to perform during this event. One of these clubs was Filipino Club who performed their Filipino Tinikling which is a folk dance, originally performed in the Spanish colonial era. K-Pop club featured a dance following Filipino club and had the crowd roaring. Throughout the event students were able to get a Henna temporary tattoo at the booth centered around Indian culture. With many booths, we were able to walk around and get a feel of the atmosphere which was warm and inviting. Later, we interviewed students about their cultures. We asked Aicha Bah, "What is you favorite thing to do when learning about new cultures?" She responded, “My favorite thing about new cultures is trying new food.” (That's relatable.) Then, we asked EJ Andrade to describe his culture in one sentence and he stated, “Filipino means family”. Lastly, we asked Gabriel Ungab, “What is one thing that makes your culture unique?” and he said, “One thing that makes my Filipino culture unique is is our food because I feel like it’s something that everybody can understand. Even if there’s a language barrier between people of different cultures, they will always be able to try and enjoy our food. It’s sort of a universal thing and I think that’s really cool.” Simply put, it’s a powerful and deep statement. With that said, the cultural fair was a huge success, as many students had fun learning about different cultures from their peers.

Leaving the Courts! College Acceptances By: Erika Maala and Bryan Samson Every high school senior is struck with both excitement and nervousness when college acceptance season comes around. During the months of March and April, colleges start accepting or rejecting students. Here at HTPA, we have had students that have been accepted into to universities such as MIT, Stanford, Cornell, and UCLA. In this year’s senior class, every one of the 87 seniors have been accepted to at least one college. This year, the class of 2018 received nine UCLA acceptances––more than the past four years here at Harbor Prep. Our students have always had a good streak with getting accepted into schools within the UC system. We got the chance to interview three students who got accepted into schools that are part of the UC System. These students are Andrew Dacayanan, Monique Torres, and Jenna Deseo.

Student Leader By: Safiya Kher and Lauren Ortega For the month of April, Ruth Rodriguez has been chosen as the student leader. We interviewed Rodriguez about her academic and leadership accomplishments. Tell us a little about yourself? My name is Ruth Rodriguez and I am a Junior. I am also the Junior Class Representative. What are your academic achievements? I have received straight A’s throughout high school except for Sophomore year when I received a B in AP European History. I also received an award for playing softball and maintaining my GPA. What do you see yourself doing in the future? Tell us about your career interests. Career wise, I have no idea what I want to do with my life because I am interested in so many different things. I love public service and the thought of being involved in politics in order to serve others. However, I also love the idea of teaching children and being a teacher. I want to make an impact in other people’s lives, and I feel as though teachers do just that. Furthermore, I also find medicine interesting and the idea of helping those most in need. Overall, I find that there are many things that interest me and long for the day that I finally discover what my true passion is. Do you volunteer at an organization? If so, where? Outside of school, I mostly just do homework because I have a lot of it. However, I also take part in a non-profit organization called Sharefest. This organization is one that focuses on making its members develop leadership skills and provides us with the tools necessary to become future leaders. All in all, I am very proud to be part of this organization because I truly see the positive impact that it has on our communities. Name one person who has influenced your life or who inspires you. And how? My parents are the two people that have inspired me most in my life. I am aware of all of the struggles that they had to go through to come to this country and am utterly grateful for it. If it wasn’t for their vigor and passion when it comes to me having an education, I don’t think that I would be where I am today. As you consider qualities of a successful leader, where do you see your opportunities for personal growth? As for personal growth, I believe that I have much more room for that. I continuously try to better myself each and everyday by trying new things and seeing things from different perspectives. I have always had a love for school and the learning process, which is why I am so intensely focused when it comes to being in a classroom and listening to lecture. However, above all, I believe that personal 4 growth is something that continues to occur throughout one's life and we have to make the best out of it.

Sanctuary Cities Sanctuary cities in general to many immigrants represent a safe area in which they are protected. Although this is the case, there have been a few times when ICE has become involved. Recently Donald Trump has asked all the mayors from each state to comply with his ideas. If a state chooses not to abide by his reasoning, Trump has threatened to decrease state funds. Los Angeles for example is a sanctuary city in which many are safe yet still fear deportation.

You’ve Been Warned! Guns! There has not been much change in this, and has become a danger to society. Society cannot be trusted and many people misuse and take advantage of their Second Amendment. Many do not take guns seriously as they should.

Stop Police Brutality! There was a recently discovered shooting against a citizen by police officers. Stephen Clark, a 22-year-old-man who was shot twenty times due to a search of theft around his residency. Being entirely innocent, he was shot on video seven times in the back. Policemen told him to walk backwards and shot him again for accusation of handling a weapon that was non-existent. Clark did have a history of arrest, but soon after being released he changed his life around and wanted to be successful. A soon successful young man, who raised his two sons had left at such a young age. There are many cases of police killing innocent people, some in which are not justified.

Earth’s Mightiest Crossover By: Jennifer Jimenez and Harmony Vasquez

There is an abundance films to look forward to in the box office for 2018, and this month alone. Arguably one of the most highly anticipated movies to be released this April is Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War. Directed by the Russo brothers, this superhero mash-up has many excited, comic enthusiast or not. All of Marvel's previous blockbusters such as Iron Man, Spiderman Homecoming, and the extremely successful Black Panther, have been building up to this moment. After years, we will be able to see the hero team ups and interactions we have been waiting for. Every one of the heroes we have seen so far will be joining together to save the world from the main villain, who has been looming in the after credits, Thanos. On a mission to collect all six of the infinity stones, Thanos is not letting anyone get in his way. For those who are unfamiliar with infinity stones, they are immensely powerful stones created by cosmic entities before the creation of the universe. They were made to represent different aspects of the universe, with each possessing distinct powers and capabilities, for example, the time stone aids in altering time. Thus, if Thanos can collect all six of the stones, he will become extremely powerful. On top of all of this, the trailers are building plenty of suspense, and leaving its audience with loads of questions and speculations. Will our favorite heroes succeed in saving the world yet again? Will we lose any fan favorite heroes in the war? We will just have to wait and see. If you are a fan of super-powered action and adventure, with a touch of comedy, get your tickets! Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 27.

Food By: Charissa Guico and Andre Naguio By now, everyone has heard of Churroholic, a dessert store centered around churros, located in the heart of Carson. When I arrived, the line was long and parking was difficult, but I was excited to try the instagram -worthy churros that made their way onto people’s foodie lists. For the length of the line, the journey to the register was pretty quick, but the wait until I received my food was a different story. I was waiting for more than half an hour for my order, however I did get quite a few more items than other customers, so the delay was understandable. Regarding the taste, I loved it because it satisfied my sweet tooth cravings, but the ice cream that the churros were paired with made it taste a little too sweet. I was also pleased with the attitude of the workers, as they were very nice to me and my family. Overall, the food was good and the employees were nice, but the popular dessert restaurant is a little bit overrated. I would give this restaurant a 3 / 5.

Why is Fortnite popular? By: Maroon Fortnite, the so called most grossing game in the world, is actually quite boring. Fortnite is a menace to the gaming society, to actual gamers, it is not unique and took ideas from other games like DayZ, H1Z1, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. A sophomore attending Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy says the same, he believes that Fortnite is not fun because it has no objective or ranking process. Like why is it so popular? You do the same thing over and over again, and nothing gets accomplished. Why do people want to win? Most do it just to show off their “master” gaming skills and brag about their win. Others do it just to bandwagon, and try to prove how much of a “gamer” they are. Also if you do not own a “cool” skin you are called "a noob" and bullied for not buying it. Epic Games cater to players that spend money, giving them more challenges and objectives. This means in order to be able to have the "full gaming experience" you must spend money. Eventually the hype will die and Fortnite will no longer be a popular game.

Fashion By: Jalen Abadilla and Miles Crisostomo Throughout the year of 2018, fashion has been quite successful. Starting with Supreme, Week 1 officially started on the 22nd of February, as merchandise started selling on the website at 8 AM PST. Due to the popularity of the drop, likeable items sold out in under 25 seconds. Up next is Balenciaga. This massive company had an outstanding year in 2017, making headlines with the Balenciaga speed trainer, blowing up soon after it was released. Gucci then came on the scene, trying to create pieces that appealed to their consumers. In order to do that, they had to merge high fashion with street wear, thus releasing tees along with hoodies, pants, and even sneakers. Another brand on the rise is Palace. The biggest news for Palace in 2017 was the opening of its new store location, located in New York City, and things have been on an upward trajectory ever since. Last but certainly not least is Off-White. This brand rapidly grew, collaborating with other top-tier brands, including Nike. Off-White and Nike released a set of sneakers that gave life to different Nike shoes, including Air Vapormax, Jordan 1’s, Nike Air Presto, and Air Max 90’s, to name a few. These releases favored each of the two companies, as sales for each shoe were highly successful. It’s still so early in the year and we can’t wait to see what the future holds, in terms of fashion.

By: Erin Montoya In light of the recent Facebook-Cambridge Analytica Data scandal, the media market is reacting to the new demand for more trustful outlets that stem from the unsettled masses. New alternative media outlets have opened up to compete with the mainstream and these smaller ones have more attractive incentives for consumers to use their platforms.

Senior MCNC Activities Conference By: Cesha James By: Fabiola Guzman

From Wednesday, April 11 through Sunday, April 15 HTPA’s MCNC school club travelled to Houston ,Texas where this year’s annual conference was held. At this conference, students from all over the country worked together to develop projects that directly address the adolescent homelessness in their local communities.

Senior activities are a fun way to get the class together to celebrate their last year and a new beginning. Our senior activities have consisted of a bonfire, Mulligans, bowling, and the annual senior sunset. These activities created an atmosphere that allowed the seniors to spend time meaningfully together, and create a lifetime 7 bond.
