BE GLOCAL

By Pastor Mark D. Cain

You may have noticed that I like new words, even made up words. I can’t claim credit for glocal, but I like it. It captures the beauty of the “both/and” rather than the “or.” Jesus calls us to be global Christians as well as local Christians at the same time. Global + local = Glocal. Pretty high on Jesus’ priorities is to “love our neighbors” Matthew 22:39, and also take His message to “all the nations” Matthew 28:19. We are to be His witnesses in our own “Jerusalem” (locally) as well as “to the remotest part of the earth” (globally) Acts 1:8. The term glocal has been around in the business world since the late 1980’s, according to Wikipedia, but I find it to be a helpful description of what Jesus called His followers to 2,000 years ago. I used to use the word picture of looking at the world with Jesus’ eyes through bi-focals. Both the upper and bottom part of the lenses are important. You want to be able to see far away and up close. But now I wear the “no-line” lenses, so now it’s glocal. One of the ways Jesus “self-defined” His own purpose in coming to earth was “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost" Luke 19:10. And if we let Jesus Himself set the boundaries and geography of where “the lost” are that He came “to seek and to save,” biblically we must conclude He is simultaneously concerned about those closest to you, and those farthest away. Do you find yourself naturally drawn to a greater concern for one or the other? Perhaps that’s not bad – our Lord does give different passions and heart burdens to different people. But I urge you to do a self-check and make sure that a) you aren’t completely neglecting the other area that you are not as naturally drawn to, and b) that you don’t expect everyone else to have the identical passion you do. I often reflect on a quote I read from an EFCA pastor many years ago: “The energy of the soul (and church?), left unchecked, drifts rather rapidly towards self-centeredness. I am appalled at how easily I can be concerned only with myself – with my feelings, my needs, my unmet longings. Self-centeredness is poison to the soul (and church?).” To overcome this inclination, we must intentionally reach out to others. Locally, Village Bible Church will participate in a nationwide program sponsored by Dr. Billy Graham entitled “My Hope America” based on Matthew 9:9-10. What is My Hope America? It’s an outreach of friends sharing Jesus with friends. It’s simple: INVITE, WATCH, SHARE and ASK. As we continue through this year, VBC will be providing you with very “do-able” opportunities to be personally engaged in outreach to those nearby with this, “The My Hope With Billy Graham,” program that will climax on Dr. Graham’s 95th birthday in November. Far away outreach includes our Mission Program with weekly newsletters and prayer updates, frequent mission visitors and our annual Missions Conference in the Fall. Don’t miss out on these opportunities, both local and global; the life that is changed will be your own, as well as that of another. Come aboard with me – let’s be glocal together. Co-Laboring With You, Pastor Mark

Summer Bible Studies Village Bible Church Women's Ministries will offer two Thursday evening summer Bible studies beginning May 2nd or June 13th. May Bible Study: Brave: Honest Questions Women Ask written by Angela Thomas will be taught by Cheryl Kastner and Julie Graves. The study addresses our insecurities, flaws and struggles. It also covers how God can answer our questions if we are brave enough to ask them. Come dig into several common issues that Angela covers in this study. The class begins on Thursday, May 2, and continues for four weeks from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in Fellowship Hall (103). June Bible Study: "The Day of the Lord" is an inductive Bible study. This study will compare scripture to scripture to see what the whole counsel of God says about “The Day of the Lord.” What is it? When is it? Where is it? Are we going to be there? And what does Jesus say? Marcia Gautier will lead this three week study beginning Thursday evening, June 13, from 6:15 to 8:30 pm in Fellowship Hall (room 103). No book or homework is required. Just come and soak up God’s word.

This study is open to both men and women. For more information or to register contact Dotty Burke at 922-3136 or Judy Schultz, 915-3136.

Getting to Know You God continues to bless VBC with many new people and Pastor Mark would like to get to know you better. He wants to meet with a small group of up to 6 in his office during LIFElink time (10:50 -11:45 am). This single session meeting will be scheduled periodically over the next few months. Please communicate your interest for a time of mutual fellowship via the Communication Card in your bulletin, or contact Barbi Mirenda, [email protected] or 922-0404.

Scripture Memory Nugget for May As we continue to focus together on short, “memorizable” portions of God’s Word that can sustain and strengthen your Christian life, this months scripture is a fitting word from our Lord as we begin focusing on My Hope With Billy Graham( see Pastor Marks article on front page). Every one of us is called by our Lord to shine brightly for Him wherever we are. Memorize, pray and think about how you can obey this nugget from Jesus to you:

“Let your light shine before men.” Matthew 5:16

Pastor Stephen Graham from Oklahoma City, OK has written, “ In our world we have so few places where we can cry out loud. But living in this world demands that one becomes acquainted with grief — grief that cannot be explained away or denied.” “The strong word of the Cross is that God participates with us in our suffering. Our God has come down in Christ to live with us, to share our human plight, to bear our burdens, to fight our battles with us, and to comfort us in our sorrows. He is not a far-away, untouchable God. He has drawn near to us in Christ.” “Your grief is holy. It is your friend to help you deal with the hurt over the loss of someone you have grown to love. As your relationship with them gradually grew, you cannot suddenly take it all back as if to pretend it never existed. Grief time is the time of giving your feeling a chance to catch up with what your mind already knows.”

If you are grieving the death of a loved one, GriefShare is here for YOU. We meet from 9-11 am on Tuesday mornings in Room 110. Brochures about it are available in the Welcome Center. For more information or to register, call Carl Wetzel, 922-5936, Bob Cobb, 915-9119 or Village Bible Church office, 922-0404.

In Memory of Russ Foris: It saddens us to acknowledge that Russ Foris went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Russ’s talents as a sound technician and his gift of music will be greatly missed. Russ had been the Sound Technician at Village Bible Church since May 2005. Here in the Village he also served as a sound technician at the Woodlands Auditorium and advised the sound technicians at Christ Lutheran Church. In former years, Russ taught elementary school music in Dundee, Illinois and secondary music at Thornridge High School in Dalton, Illinois. Russ is survived by his wife, Nancy Foris and his daughter, Joanna. Our prayers and sincere condolences go out to Nancy and Joanna.

A Celebration of Life Party will be held Tuesday, May 28, at the Coronado Community Center, HSV, from 4:00—7:00 pm . Please call the VBC church office at 922-0404 by May 13: so, we can give the family an estimate of the number who will be attending. The family has suggested that those wishing to remember Russ may do so with memorial gifts to: Men’s Harmony Foundation at harmonyfoundation.org; Women’s Harmony, Inc. at harmonyinc.org; or Christ Lutheran Church, 103 Ponferrada Way, HSV

Discover VBC! Class Newcomers Coffee

A special get-acquainted coffee was held on April 18th at Village Bible Church for newcomers to the church family. Several VBC team leaders discussed their specific areas of ministry and offered the opportunity for ladies to become involved. Everyone enjoyed the morning with delicious coffee cakes, fun and fellowship.

Village Bible Church is placing an increased emphasis on officially joining the church. The New Testament calls us to a high commitment to the Body of Christ on Earth—that is, the local church! Church membership is the outward expression reflecting our inner commitment to the Gospel message. Membership is much like believers’ baptism or the marriage ceremony as outward expressions of our inner beliefs. This class, designed for those who are interested in becoming members of VBC, as well as those who just want more information, will provide “everything you’ve always wanted to know about VBC, but were afraid to ask.” We will be holding another Discover VBC! Class this summer for anyone who wants to know more about VBC or is considering membership. If you are interested in attending a future session, pre-registration is requested. Sign up at www.vbcchurch.com(“About US”), or on the communication card in the bulletin or call the church office during regular work hours (922-0404) to reserve your spot today.

MISSIONS SPOTLIGHT

PIONEERS Pioneers is an evangelical mission movement with 2,593 international members serving on 248 churchplanting teams in 95 countries among 180 people groups in 100 languages. For more than 35 years, Pioneers' passion has been to see God glorified among those who are physically and spiritually isolated from the gospel of Jesus Christ—from Muslim bedouins in the deserts of North Africa and animist villagers in the jungles of South America to secular humanists in Eastern Europe and middle-class Buddhist urbanites in the sprawling cities of East Asia. We want to connect you with the unreached—through prayer, financial investment and even exploring how your gifts, talents and passions intersect with the expansion of the Kingdom of God among the nations. We invite you to explore Pioneers.org, to read stories of what God is doing among the unreached, to engage in the powerful enterprise of intercession, to discover opportunities for engagement that you may have never imagined.

Meet Chip and Melanie (last name and photo withheld for their protection) Missionaries with Pioneers in S. E. Asia Chip and Melanie are missionaries in a S.E. Asian country, where Chip has been a Team Leader for the last eight years. This young family has four children, two boys and two girls. Recently Chip has been assigned the position of PIONEERS (PI) Area Leader. In this role, his job description focuses on pastoring, coaching and serving PI Team Leaders. Chip is currently responsible for seven teams in the country and one on an island. As Area Leader, Chip’s top priority this year is to focus on the Team Leaders assigned to him. His primary work can be accomplished by communicating with the team leaders. He believes he can be most effective by developing a trusting relationship with the leaders and their teams. In addition, he wants to know their vision and desires for the work the Lord has called them to do.

Page 6

VBC Family Newsletter

The major obstacle Chip faces is the lack of personnel on his teams. Of the eight teams, only two teams are complete with units needed (a unit is either a married couple/family or a single worker). Chip’s goal is to develop full and thriving teams capable of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ within the next 3 years. In the past eight years, Chip’s work has primarily focused on the city and province where he and his family live. In his new position, Chip’s geographic area of responsibility has increased considerably. Chip’s work includes fieldwork of networking and strategizing with leaders of other organizations in his local area and in the country. In mid January of this year, Chip and his family traveled to Thailand for a leadership conference with a spiritual focus. More than one hundred leaders from the S.E. Asia – Pacific Island Region met together to seek the Lord and commit their hearts, their ministries and those they lead to Him. They asked the Lord to allow them to do His work. Melanie and their youngest daughter Kaz will travel to the U.S. for a few weeks to visit her parents. Melanie’s mother has Alzheimer’s. She will also visit Hot Springs Village where Chip’s parents live. Please pray for God’s protection and travel mercies for Chip, Melanie and the children. As Chip travels around the country, he will be spending less time at home. Pray that Melanie and the children will adjust to having less time with Chip and the grace to honor the Lord by supporting Chip in his roles as father, husband and leader. Also pray, that God will equip Chip to accomplish the goals that he has set for himself as he serves the Lord.

Vacation Bible School Huzzah!

That’s the greeting you will hear from the children at VBS, scheduled for June 10th—June 14th from 8:45 am to 12:30 pm. The goal of the “Answers in Genesis” curriculum is to build a biblical worldview for our knights and fair maidens to guard against false teachings. They will learn what the Bible teaches about each part of the “armor of God” and the “kingdoms of light and darkness”. Please be in prayer for those children attending—that these lessons will be seeds that will grow as they do. Pre-registration for VBS will begin May 12th in the church foyer for those entering kindergarten and first through sixth grade. Although pre-registration is not essential, it will help to know age and numbers in advance for our planning. This is the perfect time for grandchildren visits and reaching out to your neighbors. If you do not have the opportunity to stop at the registration table during the month, you can call Shirley Pohlman at 922-9112. Some helping hands are still needed for our castle crew. Please contact Shirley Pohlman ([email protected] or 922-9112) to see how you can help. You will be amazed to find how rewarding and fun it is. Also, do you have any items we could use to help build our medieval theme— metal vases, pottery, small rugs, coat-of-arms, banners, flags, and especially wooden “treasure” chests. Huzzah!

Take A Hike

Saturday, May 18, will be the next “Take a Hike” at Mt. Nebo State Park. Contact Mike & Jeanne Walters, [email protected] or watch for the display table in church foyer for more information and to sign-up.

Drumming Up A Drummer Do you beat to the sound of a different Drum? Village Bible Church is looking for an experienced drummer to play occasionally. If you can beat with the best of them, contact Pastor Levan, 922-0404.

Mercy Ministry Thanks You What a great saying… “Pictures are better than words.” You can see by these pictures the quantity of food that was gathered to feed needy area families. We thank the people that picked up and packed cartons of food plus the people from VBC who gave generously. The next Mercy Ministry activity will be the Thanksgiving food boxes. Your continued prayers and support for this and all Mercy Ministry programs are appreciated. In Christ Service, The Mercy Ministry Team

New Class being taught by Pastor Mark EVERYDAY DISCIPLESHIP FOR EVERYONE In the very earliest years following my own profession of faith in Jesus Christ at age 18, my life-trajectory was forever changed by a discipling experience that God brought into my life. I’ve been a zealot for discipleship ever since. Everyday Discipleship for Everyone is a four week LIFElink class (Bible study hour after the Sunday service) beginning May 5. This study is intended to explain and motivate how God’s call on each of our lives is to be a lifelong disciple of Jesus Christ. Each class will endeavor to equip with basic skills to live that life. VBC takes seriously Jesus’ last command to make disciples (Matthew 28:19). VBC’s purpose is to glorify God by making disciples who become growing and serving followers of Jesus Christ. This 4 week unit will be what its name states: Everyday = not a “Sunday Christianity” but seven-days–a-week emphasis. Discipleship = an ‘inside-out’ follower and learner from Jesus Christ. Everyone = not for the ‘super-spiritual’ or ‘green beret elites,’ but every Christian. PHILOSOPHY —This will not be designed so much as a ‘fill your bucket’ with blessings on Sunday, as a plan to ‘equip you with the tools’ for you to be a life-long learner, ever-growing and serving Jesus Christ on your own. Each weekly lesson will include time for questions and discussion. Class size will be limited to 20 so that more personal interaction can be facilitated. The course will be repeated several times per year as scheduling permits. Register with the Bulletin Response tab, or emailing: [email protected], or calling the church office, 922-0404.

ELDER NEWS It is has been estimated that 50% of our fellow villagers have no church affiliation or relationship with Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ final commandment to us, He told us to spread the Gospel message to the local area (Jerusalem), as well as, the surrounding region and the world. Hot Springs Village is our Jerusalem; so we are commanded to reach out to our neighbors here in The Village. And as you can see, we have quite a large number of people here who need to hear this message. So how do we accomplish this seemingly enormous task? In April you have started to hear about MY HOPE with BILLY GRAHAM. This program is a nationwide call by Mr. Graham for our nation to turn to God. Mr. Graham feels, “…a real sense of urgency about the spiritual condition of our nation.” The plans to do My Hope elsewhere in 2013, have been put on hold in order to focus their resources on North America. As with everything that the Billy Graham Evangelical Association does, this event is well organized. They have already done My Hope in 57 countries over the past decade. The focus for us will be to invite friends into our homes to hear Mr. Graham’s message on November 7th. There will be many prayer opportunities throughout the year leading up to 11/7. There will also be training available; so we can be as effective as possible in reaching the lost here in Hot Springs Village. And, of course, there are follow-up plans and discipleship study for those who make a decision for Christ. VBC has decided to support this event by making this a major focus of our local outreach effort for 2013. It is our prayer that other village churches will decide to join in the effort; so many here in The Village will have an opportunity to receive Christ as King of their lives. It is also our prayer that the Holy Spirit will begin working on the hearts of the lost to make them receptive to the Gospel Message. Your elder board is committed to striving for excellence in all that we do here at VBC. To accomplish this, we need to commit our resources (people) to focus on the task at hand (My Hope). Because of this, other ministry opportunities may have to be put on hold for a time. Even the Billy Graham organization is putting on hold presenting My Hope to other countries in order to commit their resources to North American in 2013. We appreciate your understanding if we have to say “wait” from time to time to other excellent ministry opportunities. Please start to pray for the success of My Hope with Billy Graham here in The Village, as well as our nation. Your Elder Board
