FROM THE CO-RECTORS

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church

Why Study the Apocrypha? On June 21, I will begin leading a Bible Study on the book of Tobit in the Apocrypha. My Bible study meets every Wednesday from 11:30am to 12:30pm, and I invite you to join in this study. Tobit is the first book of the Apocrypha, a group of 15 to 18 books of the Bible that are usually included in scholarly Bibles in between the Old Testament and the New Testament. In Roman Catholic Bibles, these books are generally interspersed throughout the Old Testament. Some Protestants reject these books entirely. Episcopalians take a “middle-way.” The catechism in the back of The Book of Common Prayer states simply, “The Apocrypha is a collection of additional books written by people of the Old Covenant and used in the Christian Church.” The word “Apocrypha” literally means “things that are hidden.” But even that meaning creates confusion as some claim that the message is that the books contain mysterious and profound knowledge for the faithful, while others claim that the books deserve to be hidden, because they consider them spurious or heretical. Part of the confusion comes from the fact that the books of the Apocrypha were written in the last 350 years or so before Christ. During this period, Alexander the Great of Greece conquered the Persian Empire, and Greek became the language of the Middle East, including Israel. The Hebrew Scriptures (Genesis, Exodus…Joshua, Judges…Psalms, Proverbs…Isaiah, Jeremiah… etc.) were all written in Hebrew before 450 B.C. By contrast, the Apocrypha was written in Greek after about 330 B.C. (but before Jesus was born). To make it even more confusing, by the time of Jesus and for hundreds of years after his resurrection, educated people (both Jews and Christians) used a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible called the Septuagint. And this translation of the Hebrew Scriptures included both the Old Testament books we are familiar with and the books of the Apocrypha. When the Bible was translated into Latin around 400 A.D., Jerome based his translation on the Greek text of the Septuagint. This Latin Bible remained the Bible of the Christian (Catholic) Church up until the Reformation. So for nearly 1,500 years, there was not much question about why you would study the Apocrypha. It was simply part of the Christian Bible. During the Reformation in the 1500s there were great controversies, especially over doctrine (right teaching) in the church. Protestant leaders wanted to distinguish between books that were authoritative for the establishment of doctrine and those that were not. One big money-making opportunity for the Roman Catholic Church at the time was saying masses for the dead to reduce their time in Purgatory. Another controversial practice was the selling 2

of “indulgences,” certificates issued by Roman Catholic authorities to reduce the time that a person or loved one would have to spend in Purgatory. These practices were exploitive of many poor people and were condemned by Protestants leaders. Unfortunately, the proof text used to promote the belief in purgatory, masses for the dead and indulgences came from the Apocrypha (2 Maccabees 12:4345). It seems to me to be a very thin “proof-text,” but nonethe-less it caused some Protestants to reject the Apocrypha, and thereby, in my opinion, “throw out the baby with the bath water.” Anglicans never completely rejected the Apocrypha. When the King James Version of the Bible was published in 1611, it included the Apocrypha. In 1615, the Archbishop of Canterbury went so far as to order that if Bibles were bound and sold without the Apocrypha, then the punishment would be a year of imprisonment. But there was a great demand for “skinny” Bibles and this requirement went unheeded. Publishers wanted less bulky and less expensive versions of the Bible, so they left out the Apocrypha. Admittedly, there are some ways in which the books of the Apocrypha are not as stirring to the soul as other books of the Bible. Nowhere in these books do you find the prophetic phrase, “Thus says the Lord.” There was a sense in the 300 years or so before Jesus that prophecy had “gone silent.” This is part of the reason, however, why I think the books are interesting to study. They “set-up” the cultural worldview that Jesus speaks to in his preaching ministry and give a sense of how people thought about angels and demons, original sin and apocalyptic hopes, and most especially the resurrection of the body. If you study the Apocrypha, you will likely be surprised. The books of Tobit, Judith, Susanna and Bel and the Dragon, read like “little novels.” Some famous hymns come from these books. “Now thank we all our God,” for example, is from a translation by Martin Luther of Sirach 50:22-24. And there are also references in literature; William Shakespeare’s works contain allusions to 80 passages from 11 books in the Apocrypha. Please join me for the study of Tobit. The name “Tobit” means “God is my good.” The story is entertaining and inspiring, and is about good, but quite ordinary people. That sounds like us at Holy Trinity! Why study the Apocrypha? Because in it we find people who are much like us, ordinary people who manage with God’s help, to do incredible good to God’s glory! Blessings and Peace+ Fr. St e v e

WEEKEND! June 3 & 4

Mark your calendar for a special Pentecost weekend when will have a special guest preacher, The Rev. Canon Tim Nunez, the Canon to the Ordinary at the Central Florida Diocese (and he’s Youth Minister Phil’s dad ). Also, the music for the 9:00am service will be provided by Abby and Sam Nunez, Julie Brown, Phil Nunez, Grace Peters and Kate Crawley!

DON’T FORGET TO WEAR RED!

The Holy Trinity Thrift Shop is a vibrant ministry of our parish that began in the 1953 and operates primarily with volunteer help. You may have considered volunteering, but didn’t know exactly what is required. If you enjoy people, you’re perfect. The shop is open Monday – Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Each day is broken into two 3-hour shifts. Volunteers work in teams to assist customers or may work in the backroom to price and put out donated items for sale. Our truck driver can always use assistance to pick-up donations and deliver large items too. Whatever time you may have to give, you are welcome at the Thrift Shop. How about “hanging out” for a shift at the shop with a current volunteer to see how it all works. Tag along with a friend who may already work at the shop or contact Betty Shanks (7282703) to see when someone you know may be working. We are currently in need of donations: furniture, dishes, glassware, pots and pans, small kitchen appliances, summer clothing, but no large appliances or TVs. Bring your donations to the shop during business hours. If you have a large donation, call the shop (321-727-2797) to arrange a pick-up.

Excellerate is coming to Holy Trinity in January 2018! Excellerate is a 16 week/32 session program empowering teens aging out of foster care in five areas of development: living and social skills, financial responsibility, leadership and spiritual growth. Upon successful completion of the program, the teens are awarded a used car which will enable the teens to go to work and/or college. This program has been successfully operating at two churches in Florida for over four and two years. This is an opportunity for Holy Trinity to make a difference in these young people’s lives. The teens are typically 17-19 years of age and have never been adopted. We will need several volunteers from our church and the community in areas such as leadership and development, teaching and mentoring, hospitality, spiritual empowerment, automobile program, fundraising and event planning. On Sunday, June 18 at 10:30am, we will host an Adult Forum to present more details about Excellerate and our volunteer needs. If you know of anyone in the community who may be interested, please invite them to join us on the east side of the Parish Hall. For more information, you can check out the website www.excellerateyouth.org or talk to Fr. Steve, Rev. Pam or call Lisa Soloway at 860-416-5055. 3

Both the exercise class and evening yoga class will meet in Lewis Hall on Mondays at 2:00pm and 6:00pm, respectively. We will continue to have blood pressures screening the weekend of June 3/4, July 1/2 and August 5/6. The times will stay the same: Saturday night from 4:30pm until 6:30pm, and Sunday from 8:15am until 12:45pm - in the Narthex behaind the privacy screen. We will be having Health Forums during the summer featuring presenters from our parish. Watch for the dates and topics in upcoming announcements. If you have particular health topic that you would like to share or know more about, leave a message with one of the Health Team members. June is National Safety Month. Check out the safety tips on the posters and the “potty papers” in the restrooms. For the new residents to our state, hurricane season begins June 1 and does not end until November 30. You can find Information at www.embrevard.com, and the Health Team will provide some materials on the table in the Narthex. We pray your summer will bring many wonderful times and memories. As your Parish Nurse, I will continue visiting parishioners. If you know someone that may need to have a home visit call the church office. Happy Summer!

Bethlehem Christian Families: June 11

Bethlehem Christian Families (BCF) will be here at Holy Trinity Sunday, June 11. They will be bringing olive wood carvings made Christian families who live in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. The tradition of olive wood carving in the Holy Land has been handed down from father to son since the 12th century. The carving wood comes from the olive trees that are over 700 years old, which have a unique beauty, and quality that is not found in other wood. To learn more about BCF and preview their carvings, visit www.bcfmission.com.

Coming in September Guest Preacher for services on September 9 and 10 plus the Adult Forum on September 10 Please join us in welcoming the Rev. Loren Fox and his wife Linda. Fr. Loren is former rector of Church of our Savior in Palm Bay. He and Linda will begin a new ministry in Thailand in November. During the sermon and forum, they will share with us the vision of their calling, invite individuals to partner with them, and to encourage others to engage the world around us with a missionary heart and attitude.
