August 2013

Water With Purpose By Mark A. Peterson

It’s a no-brainer: All plants need water. But how much and how often varies from plant to plant. While there are various recommendations out there, we prefer to rely on scientifically based advice. Knowing there can be slight variations based on soil, shade, slope, season and species, we encourage these water applications for the following plant types: Lawns — A half-inch of water once a week is sufficient for lawn survival and modest growth. Groundcover, perennials and shrubs — Plants such as jasmine, ivy, salvias, lantana, roses, yaupons and hollies do well with twice a month watering in the absence of rain. The amount is never to exceed 3/4 inch per square foot, or about 1/2 gallon per square foot, per watering event. Trees — Established native and adapted non-native trees rarely need any supplemental irrigation. If one month significantly lacks normal rainfall, then the recommendation is 1 inch per square foot, or about 2/3 gallon per square foot, once per month. Palms — Established palms only need water once a year, at most. The proper use of recommended watering amounts and schedules will produce healthy plants and reward you with lower water bills. Mark Peterson is a conservation project coordinator for San Antonio Water System.

THE OUTLOOK

CRESSIE ANIMAL REFUGE AND ENRICHMENT

CARE is a diverse group of business women and men with a common goal to help the animal over population problem in San Antonio.  By working with the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Service, the nonprofit group CARE is able to rescue dogs and cats deemed unadoptable and place them in happy, permanent homes.  Founded in 2009 by Lloyd and Peggy Brink, CARE is working to educate the community on the vital importance of becoming a foster home to save a life.  By directly engaging the business community, CARE has been able to build a large foster care network that is not only saving lives, but creating a trend on the importance of just opening up your home temporarily to a dog or cat  that deserves a second chance.  A vast number of volunteers for the program live right here in Fair Oaks Ranch.  CARE serves a critical need to help reduce the number of unwanted pets across San Antonio.  By helping support CARE through donation, spreading the word to foster or adopt via facebook or email, or spaying and neutering your existing pets, CARE can make a difference. On average, CARE rescues 300 dogs per year. OUR VISION - Being a part of making San Antonio a “no kill” city for stray or unwanted dogs and cats. OUR MISSION - We are committed to saving the lives of dogs and cats that are facing immediate euthanization by providing transitional fostering, leading to a permanent, loving home. FOSTERING - Fostering not only saves an animal’s life--but also gives it an opportunity to heal emotionally and physically from the trauma of being in the shelter and/or on the streets.  By receiving loving care from a foster family, the animal is allowed to “settle in” and learn some social skills, making it more likely to have a successful adoption.  CARE does not only rescue street animals, but animals that are “owner surrendered” and do not get the 72 hour hold that a stray would normally have and are in imminent danger of being euthanized.  They also rescue animals that are difficult to adopt, such as dogs/cats hit by cars, requiring surgery and lengthy recoveries, mange dogs and heart worm positive dogs.  Donations made to CARE go directly to the animals and their care. There is no fee to foster an animal and CARE covers all medical expenses.  Another great asset to the program is the foster to adopt program, where you can simply “try out” an animal that you are fostering to see if the animal will be a good fit for your family. ADOPTING - All of our animals have been microchipped, spayed/ neutered and vaccinated.  Our adoption fee is $80 for an adult animal and $100 for a puppy or kitten. CARE also has the ability to pull any breed, size, shape or color that you may be looking for as a pet. It is a complete myth that shelter dogs are mostly mutts as there are many purebred animals in the San Antonio Shelter looking for forever homes. GET INVOLVED - Our organization could not exist without volunteers.  As a private, non profit organization, we rely on the assistance of caring and hard working volunteers in all of our programs.  Please contact us for volunteer opportunities or to make a donation today. Anyone interested in joining our email chain, receiving and networking adoptable animals in need contact Carla at [email protected]. SOME CARE ADOPTABLES! Cheddar

Say cheese, my name is Cheddar. My name is deceiving, because it can be male or female, so you should know I am a female and very smart. I am about 1 ½ years old and I am a golden mini-Lab because I only weigh about 43 lbs. I might have some Collie mixed in too, because I have a few bits of white and beige spots mixed on my face. I get along well with other dogs. I am spayed, micro chipped and vaccinated. I am looking for a foster or adoption home, so please call CARE today!

Trudy

Does anyone want to foster or adopt me?  Pretty please with the sugar on top. My name is Trudy.  See my pretty smile,  CARE saved me from euthanization at the City of San Antonio Shelter.  I am a German Shepherd mix and 42 lbs.   I am 5 years old,  I am good on a leash and sweet  and  I am fine with other dogs .  They don’t know about my cat-i-tude yet.  I am spayed, vaccinated and micro chipped and ready for a good home.

Mia

My name is Mia and I am 5 months old. I am doing very well in my CARE Foster home. I am quickly catching on to the whole potty outside thing. I am also quickly learning to respect kitties. I am calm... for being a Border Collie mix. I love toys and the kids.  My Foster Neighbor is fostering three puppies and I love to go to play dates with them. I already know sit and walk comfortably on the leash. My Foster Mom says it is important to tell you that I am not very needy at all, so relative to some other dogs I will be lower maintenance as far as attention goes. I am a good well balanced pooch that would fit in well in any home.  I am spayed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped!

Alfie

The rest of my white siblings are all adopted now. But you will be getting the best one if you adopt me!  I am an Australian Cattle Dog mix and the runt of the litter named Alfie.  Besides being super handsome, I am not as alpha-ey as my sisters, so I get along with any other dogs. I think I would make an awesome addition to any family.  See my cute pointy ears, I will probably grow up to look like a mini-German Shepherd.  I am pretty much potty trained, but will probably still have a few accidents as I get used to my new home.  I am about 16 weeks or so now, and the vet guessed that I would be 20-25 pounds when  grown up. My Mom ( Snow)  is still available too!   I will be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. 4

THE OUTLOOK Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District Water Conservation Audit The sweltering days of summer are just around the corner and with increasing temperatures, come increasing pressures on our aquifers to meet water demands. Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGRGCD) would like to ask for your help in reducing that demand on groundwater. We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problems areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead. We would love to work with you on conserving our water resources and helping potentially reduce your water bill as well! To schedule a visit, give us a call at 210-698-1155! To learn more about Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District, please visit us at www.trinityglenrose.com.
