Week Four: The Prophet Like None Other Deuteronomy 18:14-19 Spend FIFTEEN - Day One 1. Have you ever had an “aha” moment where something you couldn’t understand finally clicked? What helped you make the connection?

2. Through the past few weeks, we’ve been studying some themes of Advent. We’ve looked at attributes of Jesus’ first and second coming, themes of preparation and proclaiming favor. Read Romans 16:25-27. This is another popular text read during Advent. What themes do you find in this text?

3. One strong theme in Advent is “reveal”. We anticipate the coming of Jesus because Jesus makes things known to us that we couldn’t know otherwise. Read John 14:8-14. What does Jesus reveal to us?

4. How does knowing Jesus impact your relationship with God?

5. Read John 14:8-14 again. What does Jesus mean when He talks about “knowing God”? Is He referring to a simple set of cognitive beliefs or something more? Explain.

6. In what ways does your life demonstrate that you know God?

7. Jesus makes God known to us, which makes it possible to have a relationship with God. When we know God, it becomes evident in all areas of our life. Finish your FIFTEEN in prayerful reflection. Are there any parts of your life that suggest you don’t know God? Confess those parts. Ask God to use your life to make Him known to others.

Spend FIFTEEN - Day Two 8. If you could meet any person in all of history, who would it be and why?

9. All the major religions of the world have several key figures in common they recognize as important. One of those is Moses. Who is Moses and why is he such a big deal to so many? Use the following verses to help you in answering that question: a. Exodus 2:1-10

b. Exodus 3:1-10 c. Exodus 4:10-12 d. Exodus 19:3-9 e. Exodus 34:29-35 10. Describe Moses’ relationship with God. What was Moses’ role within the Israelite community?

11. It’s clear in Moses’ story that he was close to God by the way he lived his life. Do you think that kind of relationship with God is possible for you to have? Why or why not?

12. Finish your FIFTEEN in prayer. Ask God to continue to work in your life and to show you the areas that you can be a leader and example in faith to others.

Spend FIFTEEN - Day Three 13. When you think of the words “prophet” and “prophecy”, what comes to mind?

14. How would you answer the question “What is a prophet and what does he or she do?” Use the following scripture references for help. a. 2 Chronicles 24:19 b. 2 Kings 17:13 c. Luke 13:34 d. Acts 2:22 15. One of the major signs of being a prophet was hearing directly from the Lord for the purpose of communicating that message to God’s people. Why do you think God used prophets instead of directly speaking to all people?

16. In the New Testament, we read, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” (Hebrews 1:1-2a) Do you think this means there are no more prophets? If not, how does this verse change their role?

17. Read 1 Corinthians 14:1-3. How could you see a gift of prophecy actually functioning in your everyday life?

18. Finish your FIFTEEN in prayer. Thank God for gifting people with the ability to point you towards Jesus. Pray that God would also use you in this way.

Spend FIFTEEN - Day Four 19. Finish the sentence: Leaders do not get any better than ___________.

20. For most people in the history of the Bible, that sentence would be finished with “Moses.” Moses was seen as the greatest man to ever live. Why do you think that is?

21. Read Deuteronomy 18:14-19. This is Moses talking to the people of Israel. What key phrases stick out to you as important in this text?

22. Read Hebrews 3:1-6. Moses was only a type of the ultimate prophet, Jesus. According to this text, in what ways is Jesus greater than Moses?

23. Moses pointed out to people that what God promised would be fulfilled in Jesus. Knowing this, how does it change how you look at Moses and the great works he did and things he said?

24. The Bible is not a book about heroes; it’s a book about broken people who were healed by the Hero: Jesus. Finish your FIFTEEN in prayer. Ask God to help you keep your heart and mind fixed on Jesus always.

Spend FIFTEEN - Day Five 25. When you think of Jesus, what images or stories first come to your mind?

26. Read John 2:1-12. Highlight parts that bring out Jesus as prophet.

27. Continue reading John 2:13-25. Highlight parts that relate to Jesus as prophet.

28. Prophets would do miracles, call out sin, and predict the future in a way that showed God was speaking to and through them. Jesus performs miracles, calls out sin and predicts the future on His own authority. Where in John 2 do you see these differences? What does this tell you about who Jesus is?

29. Finish your FIFTEEN in prayer. Thank God for how He follows through on all His promises in Jesus. Ask for help in seeing these promises as you read scripture and as you go about your life.
