• If you had to choose between going on a picnic and being baptized, which would you choose? • Which would give temporary pleasure? • Which would make eternal happiness possible?

• Some choices we make have either immediate or eternal results. • The choices we make show what our values are, or what is most important to us. • In this lesson we will learn about the values of two brothers and how their choices affected their lives.

• What did Rebekah learn through prayer about her unborn sons?

– See Genesis 25:22–23

• Which of the twin boys was born first?

– See Genesis 25:25 • Who was to rule over the other?

– See Genesis 25:23 • In those days the oldest son usually received the birthright, which meant that when his father died he inherited a larger portion of his father’s possessions and became the next patriarch, or head, of the family.

• Why did Esau give up his birthright?

–See Genesis 25:30–32

• Which of the two choices had temporary value? • Which choice had eternal value? • Esau was hungry, but his life was not in danger. He placed more value on satisfying his hunger than on the blessings and covenants of his birthright. • In what ways do we sometimes choose things of temporary value instead of things of eternal value?

• What other choices did Esau make that showed he was not concerned with eternal values?

–See Genesis 26:34–35 • Why were his parents upset over whom Esau married? • Esau’s wives did not believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ or follow God’s teachings and commandments. • Why is it important to marry someone who believes the gospel of Jesus Christ?

• Why was it important for Jacob to receive Isaac’s first blessing? • The Lord knew that Jacob would be worthy of the birthright blessing from the beginning and had revealed this to Rebekah before the twins were born.

• See Genesis 25:23

• When Isaac became aware that he had blessed Jacob instead of Esau, he could have revoked the blessing, but he did not. Isaac recognized that the blessing was right when he stated, “And he shall be blessed”

• See Genesis 27:33

• How did Esau feel when he realized Jacob had been given the birthright blessing?

• See Genesis 27:41

The Friend, August 1998 states:

• Because of his great faithfulness and obedience, the Lord made a covenant with Abraham. • Through him and his descendents, all the nations of the earth would be blessed. His family would be as numerous as the sands of the sea. They would bear the holy priesthood and would take the gospel of salvation to all nations.

Enrichment Activity #5

The Friend, August 1998 states:

• When you become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you share in that Abrahamic covenant. • If you obey the commandments and do all the Lord asks you to do, you will receive all the blessings promised to Father Abraham. Enrichment Activity #5

• Esau gave up these blessings when he married outside the covenant. Being married in the temple is very important. • The blessings promised to Abraham and his posterity will come to all who accept and live the gospel of Jesus Christ. Enrichment Activity #5

• Why did Isaac send Jacob to choose a wife from among the daughters of Laban?

•See Genesis 28:1, 3–4 • Laban was Rebekah’s brother. If Jacob married one of Laban’s faithful daughters, he would marry in the covenant.

• More than twenty years after Jacob went to Padan-aram to marry, he returned to the land of Canaan. Why was he concerned about meeting Esau on his return?

• See Genesis 32:6–7, 11 • What did Jacob do when he saw Esau?

• See Genesis 33:3 • What did Esau do?

• Let’s read Genesis 33:4

• What did Esau say when Jacob tried to give him gifts?

• See Genesis 33:8–11 • How do you think Esau’s feelings about Jacob had changed?

• Even though Jacob had the birthright, what did he want to do for Esau? –He wanted to share what he had with Esau. • What were some of Jacob’s values? • Each brother had to forgive the other. • What do we value most when we are willing to forgive?

I need a victim… … I mean a volunteer! • Put this coin up to one eye and close the other one. • Now slowly move the coin away from the eye that is open. • What could you see with the coin up close and how much more was there to see when the coin was moved away? • The coin represents an immediate desire, such as hunger, that blinds us to other things around us. • Like Esau, sometimes we experience failure or unhappiness because we trade what we want most for what we want at the moment. Enrichment Activity #4

Let’s discuss these situations: • You are tempted to miss church to watch a sports event or play video games. • You are tempted to buy a toy rather than pay your tithing. • Temptations, like the coin, keep us from seeing the entire picture. Do not be blinded by such temptations.

Enrichment Activity #4

• When God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, what did he promise Jacob?

• See Genesis 35:11–12

• Who else received these promises?

• The blessings of the Abrahamic covenant go from Abraham to Isaac, then to Jacob and his children. • Through the Prophet Joseph Smith these blessings were restored and are available to members of the Church through temple ordinances.

• Think about good experiences you have had with your brothers and sisters. • Share something nice about them. • Because families can be together forever, you should love and help your brothers and sisters. Enrichment Activity #1

• “Your most important friendships should be with your own brothers and sisters and with your father and mother. • Love your family. Be loyal to them. • Have a genuine concern for your brothers and sisters. Help carry their load” (Ezra Taft Benson, in Conference Report, Apr. 1986, p. 56; or Ensign, May 1986, p. 43). Enrichment Activity #1

• How many solutions can you think of for these situations? • Which solutions would bring temporary pleasure? • Which solutions would bring eternal happiness? • Your younger brother/sister wants you to play with him/her instead of going to your friend’s house. Enrichment Activity #2

• How many solutions can you think of for these situations? • Which solutions would bring temporary pleasure? • Which solutions would bring eternal happiness? • Your older brother is preparing dinner and asks you to help even though it is not your turn. Enrichment Activity #2

• How many solutions can you think of for these situations? • Which solutions would bring temporary pleasure? • Which solutions would bring eternal happiness? • Your brother/sister is studying for a test in school. You are watching a television program that is distracting him/her from his/her studies. Enrichment Activity #2

• Be forgiving and understanding at home. • Treat others how you want to be treated. • Other people have feelings, too!

• Esau and Jacob were the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah, whom we learned about in a previous lesson. • Esau was born first. • In those days the father gave the first son a blessing. It was called the birthright blessing. Esau should get this blessing when he grew up.

• Esau liked to hunt. Jacob stayed at home. • One day Esau came home very hungry. Jacob had made some pottage. (Pottage is like soup.) • Esau asked Jacob for some pottage. Jacob said he could have some. But Esau must give him something. • Jacob said Esau must let him have the birthright blessing.

• Esau was very hungry. He did not care about the blessing. He said Jacob could have it. Jacob gave him the pottage. • Isaac became old. He gave Jacob a blessing. It was the birthright blessing. Isaac said Jacob would be a great man. He would be the leader of Esau and many other people.

• Esau was sad because he did not have the birthright blessing. Esau was angry at Jacob. He hated Jacob. • Isaac talked to Jacob. He said Jacob should not marry any of the girls from Canaan. Jacob should go to another land. There Jacob would find a girl to marry. • Jacob started on his way.

• One night Jesus Christ came to him. Jesus said Jacob would have many children. Jacob’s family would have all of the land of Canaan. Canaan was the promised land. • Jacob promised to obey God. He promised to pay tithing. • One day Jacob stopped by a well. He saw many sheep. He met a girl named Rachel. He helped her give water to her sheep.

• Jacob met Rachel’s father. His name was Laban. He was the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s mother. He was glad to see Jacob. • Jacob said he wanted to marry Rachel. Laban said Jacob could marry Rachel. But Jacob must work for him. • Jacob worked for Laban for seven years. He worked very hard, but Laban gave him Leah for his wife. Leah was Rachel’s sister.

• Laban let Jacob marry Rachel, too. But Jacob had to work for seven more years. • Jacob had many children. He became rich. He had many animals. • Jacob worked for Laban for many years. Then Jesus told Jacob to go back to his own land. So he took his family and animals and left Laban’s house. They went to the promised land.

• On the way Jesus Christ came to Jacob. Jacob asked Jesus for a blessing. Jesus blessed Jacob. Jesus said Jacob would have a new name. His name would be Israel. Israel would have the priesthood. • On his way home Jacob met Esau. Jacob thought Esau still hated him. Jacob bowed down to Esau. • But Esau did not hate Jacob anymore. He and Jacob hugged each other. They loved each other.

• Jacob and his family went on to Canaan. Esau and his family went to another place. • Jacob had 12 sons. They were called the 12 sons of Israel. Each son and his family were called a tribe. • Israel’s family became the twelve tribes of Israel. They were called Israelites.
